summer is here which obviously means most public schools are out. unfortunately, summer isn’t the best time for students who depend on school lunches as their main source of food. by texting “FOOD” to 877877 and entering your zip code, it will find the nearest location that provides free meals.

This is our library here in Spring, Texas, in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. When I think of people who have lost everything, I hate how sad I feel about a library. But this is where I’ve taken my kids for story time since they were infants. It’s where I’ve met my closest mom friends. It’s a place that means the world to me.
But beyond that, this is a place that my community needs. It offers free educational programming, resources, information, language classes, Internet, human connection, a place that is clean and safe, free lunches for kids in the summer when school is out. It’s not just a bunch of books. For some people, the library is their only access to these things.

(( OOC: So I just found these… apparently I filmed this and never did anything with it, which is a shame, because I’m enjoying it immensely. So here it is now… really REALLY festive Sirius… totally out of season.
As much as i love the cult ending stuff, i also love the idea of Joseph actually being a real sweet guy.
None of the cult stuff, he’s a regular dad with a failing marriage and a lot of stress and all he wants is to escape life and go to the Bahamas and sail his boat and drink fruity alcohol, the guy is probably having a mid-life crisis, tbh.
His wife flirts with other men, is an alcoholic, snaps at him. He’s not much better than her, he snaps as well and pursues a romance with the New Dad On The Block, but neither of them want eachother anymore, and its written to be very blatantly obvious that they are both terrible for eachother.
I want to imagine a good ending where Mary and Joseph do split, on good terms. Where Amanda’s gone off to college and Joseph stays with you in your house. Where he gets partial custody of his kids and they visit on weekends and holidays and during the week whenever. Where you give the twins more fodder for their creepy charade and chris opens up to you, and you finally get to meet his toddler, crish.
Joseph takes you out on his boat and you have margaritas on the deck together and he teaches you about rigging the sails. He kisses you a lot and he casually puts an arm around your waist and he smiles and you know its a real smile not just a facade.
He’s still the Cool Youth Pastor, and you help him with the dances and the bake sales. Sometimes you sit in when he’s doing bible study with the kids, you help pass out snacks, you help him coordinate vacation bible school in the summer. In the evenings he sits in the living room on a recliner and reads the good book, with his reading glasses sliding down his nose.
And once every now and then you both scrape up enough money for a real vacation to the keys or the caribbean or wherever. You go to the real Margaritaville and live on island time for a week or so. You stay in a cute hut on the water like in the sandals commercials, walk on the beach, have a romantic dinner, and he takes you back to your suite and you both have a slow romantic evening in bed.
You can tell he’s happy being with you, and even after years he still makes your heart skip a beat.
well jasper is absolutely DREADING it lmao, i think pearl will have to drag her butt into class every day. meanwhile, pearl is thoroughly reviewing the class schedule and curriculum, making sure they have all their books and trying to make it sound appealing (and totally failing lol)
Stiles can’t shower at his house anymore, not since the sacrifices. Just seeing the tub gives me flash backs to going under the water at Deaton’s, the thought of actually getting into one is enough to send him over the edge into a full on panic attack.
He showers in the locker room now, in the open space where he knows he can’t go under. He knows that it’s not a permanent solution, but for now it works.
After everything with the Nogitsune Stiles stands in the locker room showers for at least an hour. He can’t get the feel of blood off of his hands. He scrubs himself until he’s red, until his skin is tender to the touch, and then he scrubs more.
There were too many places with bad memories attached now, but Stiles gets through them, he has to. He still can’t look at a bathtub without feeling sick to his stomach. That’s where it started for him, that’s how the Nogitsune got in.
So he still showers at school, he avoids talking about his feelings and his struggles because it’s his fault that Allison is dead, that Isaac is gone, that Scott’s a werewolf. It’s all his fault and he knows that, so he stays strong and steady on the outside, if not a bit defiant.
It all works out fine until the school is locked for summer and Derek is missing and Lydia is grieving the death of her best friend so he can’t talk to her, and Scott is off trying to better himself so he can’t bother him.
After a week of sink showers Stiles finally gets an idea and breaks into the loft. Well breaks into is a very loose term, he has a key and he doesn’t think Derek would mind him using his shower.
That plan works well until Derek is back. By then the school is open again, but he knows that Derek can tell he’s been there. There’s no way he doesn’t smell Stiles in the bathroom, on the couch, in the bed.
But Derek doesn’t call him out on it, instead he squeezes Stiles neck and reminds him that his door is always open if he needs to get away. Stiles knows that if anyone would understand how he’s feeling, it would be Derek. He knows that, but he can’t bring himself to tell him anything.
He does go to the loft sometimes, mostly to use Derek’s shower and always when he knows Derek is out. That plan works as well as he other plans, meaning it’s great until it isn’t.
It’s a Sunday and Stiles is stepping out of a hot shower at the loft, he had a bad night, dreams of dead brown eyes and sticking swords into friends had kept him up. He had been alone when he got to the loft, but when he steps out of the bathroom Derek is sitting on the couch reading a book.
“None of this is your fault,” Derek tells him, not looking up from the book, “You didn’t ask to be possessed, you didn’t want to be sacrificed, none of this is on you.”
“Or is it all on me,” Stiles says, toweling his hair dry and looking at Derek, “If I hadn’t dragged Scott into the woods that first night none of this would have happened.”
“By that line of logic this is actually all my fault,” Derek says with a sigh, making Stiles think that Derek really believes that it’s his fault, “The fire never would have happened if it wasn’t for me.”
“We both know the fire would have happened without you,” Stiles says because it’s true.
“And if Scott hadn’t gotten bitten someone else would have,” Derek counters, “It’s not your fault.”
“Maybe,” Stiles says, sitting down next to Derek. It feels like the right time to tell someone why he can’t shower at home so he adds, “I can’t go near a bathtub after being sacrificed.”
“The smell of smoke still makes me sick,” Derek admits and Stiles bumps his shoulder against him. “We’ve all got our damage. You’re not letting yours keep you from living, that’s important.”
“You too,” Stiles tells him, “Maybe we can try to move forward from all of this shit together. It’s easier with someone else helping.”
“Yeah, it is,” Derek says quietly, looking at Stiles with a soft look that he’s only seen a few times before.
And maybe Stiles still can’t take a bath, but with Derek (and a therapists) help he starts taking showers in a bathtub. And maybe Derek can’t watch open flames, but he can smell smoke without throwing up because Stiles helps him open up (and takes him to therapy once a week).
They move forward together. And eventually they’re both well enough emotionally to admit that they love each other. Every day is a journey for them, but they’re on that journey together, that’s what matters.
Some people asked because of my TONGUE IN CHEEK POST about it the other night, well!!! all it is, is being consciously aware that you’re dreaming. You can kinda train your brain to do it and it’s fukken awesome ok! I learned from a bunch of books I got out from the library one summer back in high school and I have kept up all the habits since then until shit got weird but we don’t talk about that
sometimes you get to a point where you can control your dream and force yourself to dream about a certain thing . either way it’s really damn neat to just have conscious awareness while you’re asleep and if nothing else, it’s something fun to do that doesn’t cost anything.
I got into it a few years before Inception came out, if you can believe it. So when that movie came out talking about the same ideas my mind was blown
First things first:
1) DREAM RECALL:
This is your ability to actually remember your dreams. Because imagine, even if you end up having a lucid dream, what’s the point if you completely forget it as soon as you’re awake? Some people think they don’t dream anymore but it isn’t true, everyone dreams. Some people just don’t remember.
So Write down all your dreams, anything that you can remember as soon as you wake up.
I just text it to myself first thing in the morning and usually they’re super disjointed and barely readable but it’s just enough to have me remember them again. even if you can only remember little snippets, the more you do this the better you can get at remembering.
2) DREAM CUES
Dream cues are these little things that make you realize you’re asleep because they differ between reality and your dreams. They’re kind of like triggers that will make you realize you’re dreaming. The idea is to check in on these cues even when you’re awake, so that when it becomes a habit in real life, it will become a habit when you’re asleep.
It’s also a good way to check if you’re actually awake because sometimes dreams are super realistic. I’ve had a lot of dreams where I woke up in my bed, then did the reality check only to figure out I was dreaming.
Different people have different ones but there’s some common ones:
-mirrors: In real life you look like yourself. in a dream you’ll look like a really distorted version of yourself or like a completely different person. I don’t recommend this one because what you see in the mirror might freak you out into just waking up lol
-counting your fingers and seeing more or less than the amount of fingers you have
-electronics that don’t work
-text that changes when you read it, look away and then read it again
-dim lights [i hate light dimmers for this reason eugh]
My personal ones are the and fingers and the changing text! So in real life, I count my fingers, and read some text, look away and read it again to see if it changes.
If I have more than 5 fingers, I realize I’m asleep and that’s where the lucid part starts.
Personally for me, all of these have served as dream cues, but these two are the ones that i literally check on. Another big one for me is if my teeth are loose, it’s an automatic cue for knowing I’m asleep.
INDUCING A LUCID DREAM
So you made a habit out of checking in on your dream cues and writing down your dreams. Now how do you actually do this thing….
There are some REALLY SPECIFIC METHODS To inducing a lucid dream . Some people practice one method that brings you from wakefulness directly into a dream, with NO LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS. I find this a little rarer but it’s definitely happened to me
Others have the method where you fall asleep as usual, end up in a dream, and then your consciousness wakes up while you’re in the dream. This is more common I think.
my sleep science might be off but this is it as I’ve understood it.
so the general method is to go to bed super early. like 9pm. And set your alarm for Stupid O Clock. I am talking some ungodly hour that you will never be up, like 4:30.
Reason being: You will literally never go to sleep and immedeitly start dreaming. You have to have been asleep for a few hours, having gotten a few sleep cycles in. The longer you sleep, the deeper your sleep cycles run and the more restful sleep you’ll have as the night goes on. It’s only in the later sleep cycles that you start to dream.
This is the reason you’re groggy in the morning [you were just in the middle of your deepest sleep cycle] but not groggy at all if you wake up at like 12
So the goal is to wake up right before you’re gonna go into a deep sleep cycle.
Stay awake for a few minutes, go to the bathroom or something, read some stuff on lucid dreaming on your phone… You want to wake up your brain so that your mind is conscious and running even though you’re dead tired.
Now you can go back to sleep, and the conditions are pretty much met for having a lucid dream.
SO GENERALLY NOW, it’s really likely that you’re gonna have a regular dream.
But if you’ve been making a habit out of doing your dream cues/reality checks while you’re awake, at some point you’re gonna do it while you’re asleep.
stuff from the waking world carries over into dreamtown. it’s the same reason you’ll have super realistic dreams about your job or people you know.
IT’S ACTUALLY SUPER COOL When you do your dream-cues and you see different results from real life. Like I’ll count my fingers and realize there’s 6 of them and be like Ohhh shit! I’m asleep! Time to go wild.
Usually I just fly around like a motherfucker but it’s so cool to be your exact same self who is able to think about your family/friends/homework/life/memes except you’re flying
CONTROLLING THE DREAM
OK SO NOW THAT YOU’RE AWAKE while dreaming, you can try controlling your dream. This is a bit harder to explain but in my opinion it’s as easy as focusing/dwelling on what you want to do..kind of like repeating a mantra mentally.
Like lets say you’re dreaming and you come across a house. As you’re walking towards it, tell yourself “Captain Kirk is in this house and we’re gonna have the time of our damn life.” TELL YOURSELF WITH CONVICTION! BELIEVE IT! CAPTAIN KIRK IS IN THE HOUSE! OVER AND OVER!
also try practising controlling on little things first. Like point to the sky and say “brighter” or “more purple” or “bluer” or think “I want it to be night time instead" and it SHOULD change.
STAYING IN THE DREAM
There’s 2 tricks I know of that will keep you in a dream for longer when you feel like you’re about to wake up and you don’t want to.
One is spinning: If you feel yourself waking up, try spinning around on the spot till you’re dizzy. Things will blur around you and then they will clear up and get super sharp! Especially spinning while crouching. I have no idea why this works, but it does and others have said the same thing.
The other is, when you feel like things are getting blurry, focus on ONE spot in the dream. I usually crouch and like, stare at the details and texture of the road really really close up. For some reason, pinpointing your focus on one little thing will refocus the dream.
Honestly the more you read about lucid dreaming, the more likely you are to have one for yourself..Even by reading this you’re more likely to have one. It’s weird, but it works. When I would regularly read books on the topic they’d say the same thing and it was true. It’s kind of like, the fact that you’re aware that it can happen makes it likely to happen..
SO YEAH, before you go to sleep or when you wake up at 4 in the morning, google it, see what others have to say. Get your brain in gear for it. there’s lots of posts online that will probably talk about the same stuff that I have here but this is my legit personal experience with it and stuff over the years.
