So in my “what the hell is a peer-reviewed scholarly resource” talk to first year students I’m considering using this article as a starting point.  Maybe even assigning it as pre-lesson homework.  It will be a good object lesson in assessing a source’s quality, why peer review is actually important, following the links (citations), and other fun information literacy topics.

THE POSITION
Under the general direction of the Head, Instruction Services, this position will partner with colleagues within the Library and across the campus to develop, deliver, and assess in-person and online instruction that integrates information literacy into the curriculum, and will utilize learning technologies and pedagogies in support of student learning.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

*         Provides in-person and virtual general reference and research assistance and referral to appropriate University of Washington Tacoma Library resources and, when necessary, to other resources including University of Washington Libraries, and regional academic and community libraries. Reference desk schedule may include evenings and weekends.

*         Develops and conducts in-class instruction sessions in a variety of subject areas.

*         Collaborates with librarians in the development of in-class/hybrid/online presentations or instruction sessions and the development of instructional support resources

*         Conducts and provides support for orientation sessions and both formal and informal instruction in the use of library resources for students, faculty and staff.

*         Provides support for training student reference assistants and others working on the reference desk.

*         May provide circulation and other Access Services as needed.

*         Consults with faculty and selects materials for specific subject areas (to be determined).

*         Supports creation and updating of web-based resources

*         Makes recommendations for and assists in formulation of library policies, and contributes to the development of library services.

*         Communicates appropriately, effectively and positively.  Plays an active role in staying informed and participating in Libraries and unit meetings, activities and events.

*         Participates in University of Washington Tacoma Library committees, task forces, and activities as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

*         Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.

*         Experience or demonstrated interest in the provision of in-person and online reference services in a university setting.

*         Experience or demonstrated interest in the provision of instruction services in a university setting with an emphasis on lower division curriculum.  Familiarity with information literacy concepts and trends highly desirable.

SALARY
$4,000/month minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.

BENEFITS
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.

The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is pleased to offer fellowships generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for dissertation research in the humanities or related social sciences in original sources. The purposes of this fellowship program are to:

help junior scholars in the humanities and related social science fields gain skill and creativity in developing knowledge from original sources;
enable dissertation writers to do research wherever relevant sources may be, rather than just where financial support is available;
encourage more extensive and innovative uses of original sources in libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and related repositories in the U.S. and abroad; and
provide insight from the viewpoint of doctoral candidates into how scholarly resources can be developed for access most helpfully in the future.

The program offers about fifteen competitively awarded fellowships a year. Each provides a stipend of $2,000 per month for periods ranging from 9-12 months. Each fellow will receive an additional $1,000 upon participating in a symposium on research in original sources and submitting a report acceptable to CLIR on the research experience. Thus the maximum award will be $25,000.
