Scaptia singularis Kangaroo Fly - a tabanid. It’s a definitely male though, because the eyes join together. How did I discover my mistake? Because I spent the last few mornings in Jarrahdale, where dozens of this fly’s womenfolk were enthusiastically trying to bite through steel-capped gumboots and tires, in search of blood.
Look at that beautiful bee-mimicking abdomen. Look at that wonderful nectar-sipping proboscis. Look at those huge blue-green eyes. LOOK AT THEM.
