Do you have any tips for writing conflict between characters? Anything on the scale from dumb sibling squabbles to world-threatening blood feuds. I just don't know how to start it.
Conflict arises from different beliefs, different motivations, or clashing personalities. It escalates, then eventually it ceases, then there’s an after effect.
Conflict Arising: I think the best way to start writing conflict is to figure out what has the two (or more) characters at odds. Think about these three things:
What does your character want?
How far are they willing to go to get it?
What will they do if they don’t get what they want?
This is the basis for your conflict. In the example of sibling squabbles, let’s say it’s something simple - I want control of the TV so I can play videogames, but my brother wants to watch cartoons. That’s what we want. How far are we willing to go? Will we physically fight each other? Will he blackmail me? Will I cry and run to my mom and convince her to take my side?
Escalating: Normally in the case of writing conflict, it’s important to know when and how to escalate. The fight won’t start with us punching each other. The fight will start by discovering we’re at odds, then might escalate to us arguing, then shouting, then punching. It might help to sketch out an outline for the fight one stage at a time, finding where and how it begins, where it reaches its peak, and where it ends.
Ceasing and Effect: Conflict ends when someone wins or when both people end in a stalemate and walk away. When the fight ends, what am I going to do if my brother won? Will I accept it? Storm away in a huff? Throw a shoe at the TV? This can lead to more conflict - if I broke an expensive object in a rage, what happens next? I’m probably going to get into trouble and a whole new source of conflict arises. How will this affect what happens next? Will I seek revenge on my brother because I blame him? Will I steal money from him to pay my parents back for the object I broke? Will I get grounded, but decide to sneak out and defy my parents?
I hope this helps a little, at least to get you started. If you want more specific advice, you can PM me again and give me more detail and I’ll do my best to help further!

Well, it’s happening! After a lot of hard work, I’ve finally finished my first fully-animated and voice-acted episode of Ask King Sombra! I think this really is my best work yet. I hope you guys enjoy it!
It’s something I can already see myself becoming obsessed with. And it’s extremely frustrating to see the number not moving. So I think I should put it away and not weigh myself except for once a month.
