72. I will knock you on your ass if you even think about it. Shield shock!
“Now, Steve,” Darcy hedged, holding her hand up to her chest in mock concern as she tried to hide the fact that she’d broken into a runner’s stance. “Is that any way to talk to a lady?”
He rolled his eyes and stepped closer, the uniform cowl only emphasizing his jaw clench.
“You hate when I call you a lady because you’re a woman who will be whatever the hell she wants.”
She took a moment to appreciate his attention to detail.
“You were listening. Good job.”
But he continued stepping closer, no doubt planning on putting himself between her and the melee in the street.
“And since I know you and how much you want to fight me on this, I mean it. I will put you on your ass if you think of running out there for that cat you saw run under the dumpster.”
Shit. He had noticed. But what the hell was she going to do? Leave it there?
He cut her off as he turned her back away from the street.
“As much as I want to tell you to just go into the building across the street and hide until this blows over, I need you to head back the last few blocks. I saw some groups of stragglers who need help and I can’t go back there for them.”
Most of the fight died out, but she still turned to look at the dumpster.
“I’ll go get the damn cat,” he sighed wearily. “But please, Darce. I need your help and I’d really rather you stay out of the firing line. For once.”
With a smile, she bounced up on her toes to kiss his jaw.
He spared a moment to give her a one-armed hug before pushing her the other way.
“Hurry up and get out of here. I gotta go save Mittens.”
