Date Night. (Ethan)

You and Ethan have been together for a little over a year. You and him met right after he moved to LA, and you started talking and got pretty close over the span of a few months, and then you started dating, and have been going strong ever since. He had recently gotten busy with meetings, tour planning, and other projects, now that him and Grayson were getting more popular and becoming well known. 

“Baby, we need to hang out soon. I feel like I haven’t seen you in forever, even though it’s only been like three days.” You text him one afternoon, while you were sitting at your desk, bored at work, not doing anything. 

“I knooooow. I miss you. I’m just so busy right now, it’s hard to find time when we’re both free. 😩😩 But I think I have a free night, this saturday, if you’re free, we can go out. 😏” He said.

“Well look at that. I’m free too. I’ll see you then. 😘” You replied. 

“Alright, cool. See you then baby girl. 😊” You continued texting until he had to get into his meeting. You got back to work at your boring job, just thinking about Ethan and how excited you were to finally be able to go out.

It was finally Saturday night and you were getting ready for your date with Ethan. Just as you were finishing up getting ready, you heard knock on the door. You ran downstairs and answered to find Ethan standing there with a bouquet of roses and a cheesy grin on his face.

“Hey beautiful.” He said as he pulled you into his arms. He kissed you softly. “These are for you.” He said as he handed over the roses. “You ready to go?” He asked.

“Just about. Lemme go grab my keys and my purse.” You said. You set the roses on the counter and ran back upstairs to grab your things. “Let’s go.” You said smiling. Ethan followed you out and you headed down to the parking garage, his arm wrapped tightly around your shoulders. 

“So, I was thinking Chinese for dinner.” He said to you as you got into his car.

“Sounds good to me.” You smiled. You drove to the restaurant and were seated pretty quickly when you got there. Over dinner, you spent most of the time catching up, and he gave you a few hints about some of the projects that he and Grayson had coming up.

“Yeah, and all this includes a tour, right?” You asked.

“Well, eventually, yes.” He sighed. He rubbed his thumb across the back of your hand. “But, it will only be two months, at the most.” He said. You let out a sigh.

“Well, until that happens, we’re gonna have to spend as much time together as we can.” You smiled.

“I thought you would be more upset. I’m not ready to leave you.” He said.

“I’m not ready for you to leave either, but why would I be upset? You’re doing what you love, and your living out your dreams. I am so proud of you. Beyond proud, really.” You said.

“I love you (Y/N).” He said with a big smile on his face.

“I love you too, Ethan.” You said. He leaned across the table and kissed you softly. As you finished dinner, you started goofing off and taking silly pictures of each other. After a while, you could tell that Ethan was getting annoyed.

“(Y/N), I don’t even think I can see anymore. Your flash has blinded me.” He laughed.

“Okay, this is the last one.” You laughed as you snapped one last picture of him.

“Date night with my love. 💙 (he was annoyed that i kept taking pictures of him 😅)” You captioned on instagram. You sat at the table for a little while longer, just talking and grazing on the plates that were left on the table.

“You ready to go?” He asked after a while, when the waiter finally took your last batch of plates. You nodded.

“Yeah, let’s go.” You said.

“Do you have ice cream back at your place?” He asked. You nodded. “How about we finish this night up with some movies and ice cream then?” He asked.

“That sounds good to me.” You smiled and kissed him on the cheek. When you got back to your apartment, you and Ethan made yourselves comfortable on your couch and watched movies for the rest of the night. During the previews on one of the movies, Ethan got up to go to the restroom and you sat there watching the previews. Your phone buzzed on the coffee table, catching your attention. An instagram notification flashed across your screen, alerting you of a new comment on one of your photos. You opened instagram and saw that Ethan had commented on the picture that you posted of him.

“i look so ugly in this omg” the comment read. You just shook your head and set your phone back down on the table. You heard the bathroom door open and you watched Ethan as he walked back over to the couch and sat down.

“Why are you staring at me like that? You look upset.” He said.

“Why did you comment that on your picture?” You asked.

“Um, because it’s true.” He said.

“No. That is not even close to true. I don’t understand why you always say that about pictures of you. You are far from ugly. You are one of the cutest people I have ever met.” You said. He sat there staring at the floor, his jaw clenched, for a while. He looked from the floor and smiled at you, his cheeks were bright red.

“So, you’re saying that you’re only dating me because I’m cute?” He asked sarcastically.

“No, that’s just a benefit of dating you. You are literally one of the sweetest and most caring people I have ever met in my life. That’s why I’m dating you. I just lucked out with the fact that your cute.” You said as you kissed him.

“I love you (Y/N). How did I get so lucky to have you in my life?” He asked as he pulled you into his arms, kissing you on the top of your head.

“I love you too Ethan.” You said. After that, the previews were finally over and you cuddled on the couch, eating ice cream and watching movies, enjoying the night with your loving boyfriend.

Modern Glasgow AU

Jamie glided the battered Range Rover to the last free space in the car park, put on the brake, and shut off the engine. The Corries were cut off in mid-song, and silence echoed in the car. Jamie turned back in his seat to address his children - eight-year-old William sitting beside ten-month-old Julia in her car seat in the middle row, nine-year-old Brianna and ten-year-old Faith lounging in the back row.

“All right, Frasers. We have exactly thirty minutes until we need to be back in the car. Yer Mam needs us all to get home on time so that she can help Mrs. Crook make the special welcome dinner for Fergus.”

“What time does he get home?” Brianna twirled one long red lock around a finger.

“Uncle Ian is picking him up from the train station at four o'clock. It’s noon now. Mam wants it to be all special for him, because he hasn’t been home since he went away to university all those weeks ago.”

“It feels like forever,” William huffed, wriggling under his seatbelt.

“Aye, weel. We’ll all see him soon enough. But I need everybody to help me get all the things on the shopping list, all right?”

“All right, Da,” Faith sighed, clearly annoyed at being made to do boring chores on a Saturday.

“Good. Girls - get yerselves out. William, can ye help wi’ Julia?”

“Aye, Da.” William turned to unbuckle Julia from her car seat and gently lift her into his arms. Jamie and the girls slid out, and Brianna held the door open for William as he slid off the seat and into the car park. Julia instantly reached for her Da, and he locked the doors before settling her on one hip.

“All right. Stay close to me, aye? I dinna want to take one of ye to Mam’s clinic because ye werena careful crossing the road.

William’s hand slipped into Jamie’s, and Jamie made the girls walk in front of him as they neared the entrance.

“I’ll get the cart!” Brianna dashed toward the entrance and pulled a shopping cart from the long row.

“Can I push the cart, Da?”

Jamie settled Julia into the basket at the front of the cart, carefully pulling her stubby legs through through the gaps at the front. “It’s still a bit to tall for ye, lad - but do ye want to hold the list?”

William beamed, and Jamie fished the crumpled list - written in Claire’s neat script - from his pocket. He bent to kiss the blond curls at the top of Julia’s head - and she giggled - and he smiled as he pushed the cart through the entrance.

Produce first.

“All right, William - are there any fruits or vegetables on Mam’s list?”

William frowned, trailing a grubby finger down the handwritten rows. “Mama wants potatoes, and leeks, and strawberries.”

“I’ll get the strawberries, Da!”

Faith turned on her heel, but Jamie quickly reached to grab her shoulder.

“Hold on - stay wi’ Brianna, now. Can the two of ye get the leeks and strawberries? William and I will find the potatoes.”

Brianna nodded and the sisters darted off.

“The potatoes are over here, Da,” William pointed to the other side of the store. Jamie pushed the cart down the aisle to the potatoes, and bent to toss a five-kilo bag into the cart.

“All right, lad. What else?”

And so it continued - William read each item off the list, and Jamie divided the items between his children, making sure that Julia didn’t try to stick anything within reach into her mouth.

The market was safe for the bairns - they had been here many times before - but he never let them out of his sight. They were all so precious to him - all such a vital part of him - and he wanted them to be safe, as much as he also wanted them to be independent and self-sufficient.

All went well - until they reached the snack aisle.

“No,” he said for the fourth time as Brianna casually tossed a large bag of crisps into the cart. “Ye ken how yer Mam feels about those things.”

“But they’re so *good*, Da. And Rabbie’s mam lets him have them, so why can’t our Mam?”

“Please take it out of the cart, Faith, and find  the walnuts. Ye ken that Fergus likes Mrs. Crook’s cookies to have the walnuts in them.”

“Yes, Da.” She sighed theatrically, removed the item from the cart, and pulled Brianna down the aisle.

Jamie turned to his son. He had stuck out his lip and - were those tears in his eyes?

“Come now, William. Dinna do that. Ye ken I willa let ye buy them - and I dinna give a fig for what Mrs. MacNab serves her bairns. She’s no’ yer Mam, the last I checked.”

Julia rocked back and forth in the cart. Jamie lay a gentle hand on her back to steady her.

“But Da - not even the one bag? Fergus likes them.”

Jamie’s eyes narrowed at his son - who gazed back at him with his own eyes.

He sighed. “Just the one bag, then. We’re running out of time.”

Jamie pushed the cart down the aisle to meet up with his daughters. Faith clutched the bag of walnuts - and Brianna held a bag of frosted biscuits.

“Bree -”

“These are Fergus’ favorite, Da,” she insisted. “He loves the different animal shapes, ken?”

William ran up from behind and tossed two bags of crisps into the cart. Faith’s eyes went wide, but she wisely said nothing.

Jamie shook his head. “I canna argue wi’ anyone today, it seems. Come now. Put it in. Anything left on the list, William?”

William patted his pocket - but in the excitement over Da allowing them to buy snacks, he had somehow lost it.

Jamie ruffled his son’s hair and peered in the cart. “I suppose this will do. Brianna - can ye help me steer the front?”

Checking out and bagging the goods went fairly smoothly - after all, he had three very enthusiastic assistants, and Julia absolutely charmed the cashier.

Faith had conveniently kept the bag of frosted biscuits separate from the bagged groceries, and opened the bag to share with her siblings before they even left the store. They wiped sticky fingers on their trouser legs as they helped Da load the groceries and buckle in Julia before pulling out of the car park and singing “Flower of Scotland” at the tops of their lungs on the way back to Lallybroch.

Once they arrived home, they tore out of the Range Rover and ran into the house like fiends. Jamie shook his head and looked back at Julia, who was gumming the side of her carseat.

“I’m going to be in so much trouble, *mo nighean òir*. I canna say no to any of them - and God help me, I’ll have no hope with you, either.”

She snorted happily, reaching for him.

Two minutes later he was carrying three bags of groceries in one hand and balancing Julia with his other. Claire appeared at the door, and he bent to kiss her.

She pulled back.

Oh no.

“What did you feed them? They’re full of sugar. I can’t afford to have their supper ruined, not when Mrs. Crook has been working so hard - ”

He dropped the grocery bags with a loud clunk on the paving stones, wound an arm around her hips, pulled her close, and kissed her hard.

She tried to pull away, but he wouldn’t let her.

Finally Julia squealed - having patted her Mama’s shoulder, to no avail - and Jamie released her.

“I couldna help myself, Claire. I wanted to get back in time, and I didna feel like getting into an argument there in the middle of the market - ”

She pulled Julia onto her hip and held her close as the little girl rubbed her face in her Mama’s shoulder.

Claire sighed, resigned. “If we had more time, I’d give you a talking-to.”

Jamie’s eyes darkened - and then narrowed. “If we had more time, *mo nighean donn*,” he whispered, voice low, hand still tight on her hip, “I’d take ye around the corner to the barn, push up that skirt, and give ye a proper talking-to of another kind.”

She blushed prettily, and he smiled, and she shook her head.

How bad is Filmation back in the 80's? Like I used to remember hear cartoonist like John K, Sam Simon, Paul Dini and Eddie Fitzgerald said that Filmation is the worst animation studio of all time. Like I know the shows bad but why?

TL;DR version: everything about FILMATION was CHEAP

Let me back up a sec, growing up I didn’t have a lot of cartoons, what I got was either old crap from the 60s/70s or 80s toy cartoons. Now don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of affection for old crap because it was my childhood, watching G.I. Joe, Transformers, He-Man, SuperFriends and Scooby Doo is built into my being, I have a soft spot for the fucking WONDER TWINS so like, I get that a lot of people outright love these old shows. But time marched on and good cartoons were just on the horizon and they changed our perception of what cartoons could be on TV forever…

So what made FILMATION suck? It was CHEAP with a capital ¢

Limited animation, boring interchangeable stories, lazy, lazy editing. Even as a kid you knew you were watching 2nd rate crapola but it was either that or the Farm Report so you watched it anyway (any port in a storm right?) You can always tell a FILMATION cartoon because not only is the animation limited BUT that animation going to be shown again and again and again and again (and again). Sometimes even in reverse. Star Trek was at least blessed with some decent writing to distract you from the crumby everything-else (thank you DC Fontana) but it was virtually a slide show. When a show has less animation per episode than Rocket Robin Hood or Spider-Man ‘67 my face kind of scrunches up in amazement that we ate it up like we did (but then again there weren’t as many controls regarding sugar to food value ratios in breakfast cereals back in those days, so maybe my sugar fits added frames of animation where there were none)

Most shows only assembled mouth animation for each episode and if you were lucky the eyes, otherwise everything else was recycled. All the shows were written first and then animated after with these interchangeable factory parts. Even Synchro Vox stuff like Space Angel and Clutch Cargo had new art from time to time but with Fat Albert you saw one episode you saw them all blah-blah-blah all talk, no moving around. What sometimes confused me though was after they escaped the 70s they got ambitious in the 80s with stuff like He-Man and She-Ra (and maybe BraveStarr much later as they fought to survive actual cartoons) the problem with it was you’ve got some realistic bodies to animate with complex shapes and a company that is notorious for moving characters the least amount possible; the result was twitchy and weird and recycled beyond belief. SIDE NOTE: I challenge anybody not on the 80s nostalgia wagon to marathon She-Ra episodes and not fall asleep, watch 10 episodes in a row and then tell me what each one was about. People take it for granted these days that even with serial cartoons like Steven Universe each episode gives you something, whether its story or some new character detail or just something really fun happenin’ (Star vs The Forces of Evil) cartoons of yore were made like sausage links on an assembly line. If I wasn’t a horny little kid there’d be no reason AT ALL to watch garbage like The Archies or She-Ra

Anyway, sometimes you can’t see how big a circus is until you escape it and look back at the size of the tent. In the late 80s something started happening to cartoons, they were getting better, more interesting, more … animated. There are a lot of theories as to why this was. Some people claimed ownership over the movement that happened, I just think it was the zeitgeist at the time, Disney wasn’t the king of animation anymore and that meant there was a gap to fill and more stuff going on at the theatre where REAL money was being made with things like Heavy Metal and The Secret of NiMH, home grown animators were giving a shit about what they made. Then on TV when old timey cartoons with more than 24 frames of animation per second were shown to us by the geniuses at Pee Wee’s Playhouse we got woke real quick, most people hadn’t seen that stuff in decades. And then surprise! Roughly the same time that was happening The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse came about, and man, what a cartoon! That was the first cartoon I remember my parents watching with us kids. It was funny and interesting and WEIRD. It was also animated differently from other shows. It wasn’t as janky as He-Man and yet it wasn’t as somehow as slick-yet-boring as 80s Hanna-Barbara, it was fluid and interesting and weird and funny….

…and then it got yanked off the air because the 80s was a strange, strange time and place BUT the fire was lit and so many other more zany cartoons came out shortly after, Tiny Toons is pretty dated now but back then it was like WHAT! they can do that on TELEVISION? It was animated fairly well and it was funny and it wasn’t that episode of The Flintsones or Looney Tunes you’d seen for the billionth time it was fresh and interesting.

Disney started making a comeback as well what with Family Channel; new original works like Gummi Bears and DuckTales was a big departure from other stuff that was on TV at the time, it was fresh and interesting. Game changers!

At the box office we had stuff like Who Framed Roger Rabbit breathing life back into so many cartoons at once, what happened through the 80s really sparked what would lead to the animation explosion of the 90s


For me looking back at the first half of the 80s (and most of the 70s) you could clearly see how cheap and uninspired the cartoons from that era really were, and then later as an adult learning about other TV cartoons that struggled to pit entertainment vs cost was equally eye opening. The problem with TV animation has always been the expense, TV has always been the “cheap” medium. When it started they used to show old crappy cowboy serials because that was the cheapest stuff they could show to fill airtime. Early cartoons tried very hard to be economical AND funny (Tom Terrific, Rocky & Bullwinkle!) a lot of these shows benefited from a simplistic style and a bunch of animators who’d been plying their craft for years. When they started retiring in the later 60s you could see the impact it had on everything. To my mind Hanna-Barbara was the only shop that was still producing decent cartoons through the mid-60s to the mid-70s, and even then Scooby Do was cearly made in haste to combat newcomers like FILMATION but luckily for HB it caught on in a major way. But by then it was like there was a race to the bottom. Who could make the cheapest crap to get away with and then land syndication rights YIKES (I’m sure somewhere Scooby-Doo, Where are you! is still playing right now)

Now I’ve seen cartoon trends wax and wane between creator-driven and merch-driven, cheap as dirt / actual care and attention over the last 30+ years, to me its cyclical. We have been blessed with a lot of great shows for a few years which means we’re in for a bust cycle of cash-in dreck, I feel that this time around its main cause is television as a format is shrinking and producers are scared to death that their ad revenue isn’t as fat as it was over the last 30 odd years so they’re rapidly trying to make bank on easy-to-sell crap (remakes, toy tie-ins, all the stuff that make cartoons BAD).

Who knows maybe direct to web / streaming services are the next step for quality cartoons and help us avoid another dank age of animation, but for now I feel that we’re already seeing cheap, rushed out the door stuff seep in between our good cartoons.

a/n: first things first, im honestly very pleased with the outcome of this imagine. Unfortunately, having little to no computer access makes it hard for me to do certain things. As youre reading youll notice things such as mistakes that i havent seen cause sometimes theyre hard to spot on my phone. Youll also notice that the spacing of some things, like the paragraphs for example, are really weird. I can edit this completely as soon as i can get on a computer.
