“Cosette was not very timid by nature. There flowed in her veins some of the blood of the bohemian and the adventuress who runs barefoot. It will be remembered that she was more of a lark than a dove. There was a foundation of wildness and bravery in her”  – Les Misérables

Today we welcome editor extraordinaire Regina Hayes to Penguin Teen’s Behind the Book. Here to tell us about Rachel DeWoskin’s moving book about a newly-blind teenager, Regina tells us not only one of the myriad ways authors can come to work their their editor (through a proposal submitted before the manuscript is finished!) but also how involved the process can be.

A few years ago, several of us at Viking admired Rachel DeWoskin’s BIG GIRL SMALL, which was ultimately published as an adult book and went on to receive an Alex award. So when we received the proposal for BLIND, we were extremely excited and eager to welcome Rachel to the Viking list as a young adult author.

Working with Rachel on BLIND was an exhilarating and tremendously satisfying experience. In all of her books, Rachel is interested in exploring differences, in getting inside someone else’s experience. BLIND is a stunning example of her ability to do so, to imagine herself into another’s world.

In researching BLIND, Rachel spent a great deal of time at Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind.  She learned Braille, informed herself about all the technology developed to help the sight impaired, and interviewed many, many blind and sight impaired people who generously shared their stories. And then she wrote a book that is vivid, heart-breaking, and beautiful, with some of the most rich, fully-developed characters you will ever meet:  Emma Sasha Silver and her family. Already, even before publication, Rachel has received heartfelt letters of thanks from early readers.

I believe that BLIND will prove to be a book that makes a difference.
