san damiano crucifix

San Damiano Crucifix - located in Santa Chiara, Assisi, 12th century.

This crucifix is super important because it was the cross that St. Francis was praying to when he had a mystical vision from God, who commanded him to rebuild the church. The image of Christ that is pictured is an example of christus triumphans, which is the image of Christ on the cross that is alive, awake, and upright as opposed to sagging down on the cross in misery. This was a fairly simple crucifix that demonstrates a more regional style - there isn’t a ton of gold on the image, and the drapery is less sophisticated than other works during this time.
