Sam Smith’s cover of this Whitney Houston hit goes viral
Bradley Norman, Avid Sound Staff Writer

British singer-songwriter Sam Smith’s live cover of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” will give you chills.

Just 4 days after the official release, the video has raked in more than 2 million views, that’s ¼th of the original music video posted on Houston’s Vevo account in 2009.

Smith took this upbeat, quirky dance anthem and turned it into what could be considered a haunting ballad, signature to himself.

It’s interesting to watch just how casually and effortlessly Smith, dressed in a black t-shirt and staring through reading glasses, is able to project with such power.

The “Stay With Me” singer, whose debut album, In The Lonely Hour, was just released in the US this past week, has an instantly recognizable, rich, soulful, refined voice that helps transcend this track to heights I believe Whitney herself would be proud of.
