saltwater times

anonymous asked:

YAY! Could you pls draw Elros in 'Saltwater tears?'

Headcanon time!: I usually draw Elros as always being very confident and strong minded, and he is! But when drawing this I couldn’t help but think about how young he was by the time he became king (technically a teen!) and that he had to build a whole new nation from scratch and leave his only remaining family behind (his own twin). I bet he must have had some very hard times in the beginning of it all. He must have felt very alone at times too.

I guess we’ll never know // why sparrows love the snow

Today in Aquarist-ing

•Got smacked in the face by a live fish
•Covered in dried algae, dirt, and sand
•Got soaked literally from head to toe in saltwater
•Didn’t have time to take lunch until 2pm
•Acquired at least 3-4 new scrapes and bruises
•So exhausted I could barely move when I got home
•Still think I have the greatest job in the whole entire world 😊

Open my eyes, saltwater rain

Or the one where Derek and Stiles head to Ireland, get their cold water surf on, and maybe fall in love along the way.

So here is the project I have been hinted at- its tentatively called “Start with Saltwater.”

One of my coworkers Daryn (who is also a good friends outside of work) and I (Tracie) have been playing with the idea of starting our own education-based conservation firm. It has evolved into something quite more specific, in the way that we are hoping to reach out to high school and college students and just young adults in general who are interested in an ocean-related career.

Both of us wish we had some sort of guidance when we were looking into college, which would have helped save us a lot of time and stress [and student loan debt]. Through working together in the eco-tourism industry and through our personal passions for oceanic wildlife and marine biology, we have networked with people in all kinds of fields.

Our hope is to help young adults find a specific field or job they are passionate about- whether that be in research, eco-tourism, conservation, media, education or anything else having to do with salt water- and connect them with opportunities. That would mean finding the right job, the right college or even determining whether or not college is necessary for the field they want to enter.

I especially wanted to share this here because there may be a need for some of you on here, or even those who might want to help out.

For those who are aspiring for an ocean-related career, here is what we are able to connect you with:

  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Job shadowing
  • One-on-one counseling with individuals who already have a career in a given field (via face to face, skype, messaging, etc.)
  • Email buddy pairing (which kind of also falls along the lines of counseling
  • General mental/emotional support with what to expect when entering college or the workforce

And for those of you who may want to help us in this budding project- as in if you are currently working in a field and would like to participate in any of the above that would be GREATLY appreciated as well.

As of now, it is just a passion project and we hope to help as many people as we can.

PLEASE feel free to message me if you are interested in any part of this!!!

150 gallon reef tank update!
Everything’s still going really well, the very first citizens of the tank make a guest appearance somewhere if you’ve been following for a while

(that feel when you love your fish but they hate the camera, the camera hates them, you hate the camera, the camera hates you :’( one day I’m gonna have to dish out and actually buy a camera that has the ability to focus)

Sentence Starters: Owl City - Ocean Eyes

Cave In
Please take a long hard look through your text book ‘cause I’m history.
I’ve been dying to leave.
I’ve had just about enough.
Get me out of this cavern or I’ll cave in.
Try to sleep on the wet ground.
I’ll get ten minutes give or take.
I just don’t foresee myself getting drowsy.
It’ll make a mess like you wouldn’t believe.
I’ll take my leave and I won’t even look back.

The Bird And The Worm
I know the part, it’s such a bummer.
But fair is fair.
I’ll scream and you’ll be there.
Close your eyes.
Feel the shine.
You and I left our troubles far behind.
I still have just one more question on my mind.
With friends like these, well, who needs enemies?
Let’s take a shortcut we remember.
Then we’ll take a long walk through the cornfield.
I’ll kiss you between the ears.
Swirl me around your room with feeling.
We tend to make each other blush.
It’s plain to see that we were meant to be.

Hello Seattle
I fall asleep in hospital parking lots.
I sing about the tide and the ocean surf.
Take me above your light.
Carry me through the night.
Hold me secure in flight.
Sing me to sleep tonight.

Umbrella Beach
Can you feel the drops as it starts to rain?
I found the missing link to this island chain.
Home will always be here, unseen, outta sight.
I think dreamy things as I’m waving goodbye.
I’ll spread out my wings and fly.
Home is a boxcar and it’s so far out of reach.

The Saltwater Room
I opened my eyes last night and saw you in the low light.
I was feeling the night grow old and you were looking so cold.
I drew my over shirt around my arms and began to shiver violently.
You happened to look and see the tunnels all around me.
All the subways around create a great sound.
To my motion fatigue, farewell.
You can hear the waves in underwater caves.
As if you actually were inside a saltwater room.
Time together isn’t ever quite enough.
When you and I are alone, I’ve never felt so at home.
What will it take to make or break this hint of love?
Can you believe that the crew has gone and they wouldn’t let me sign on?
I can hardly relax or even oversleep.
But I feel warm with your hand in mine.
I guess we’ll never know why sparrows love the snow.
We’ll turn out all of the lights and set this ballroom aglow.
So tell me, darling, do you wish we’d fall in love?
When we’re apart whatever are you thinking of?
If this is what I call home, why does it feel so alone?

Dental Care
I’d rather pick flowers, instead of fights.
I’ve been to the dentist a thousand times so I know the drill.
But somehow I still get the chills.
Talking only brings the toothaches on.
I say the stupidest things.
I’ll swallow my pride with an aspirin, and shut my mouth.
Golf and alcohol don’t mix.
And that’s why I don’t drink and drive.

Meteor Shower
I can finally see that you’re right there beside me.
I am not my own, for I have been made new.
Please don’t let me go.
I desperately need you.

On The Wing
Breathe and I’ll carry you away into the velvet sky.
Below the Northern Lights, I spend my coldest nights.
Home among these mountain tops can be so awfully dull.
Distract me so I stay inside.
I am floating away.
I’m dreaming you’re out in the blue and I am right beside you.
My darling, we’re both on the wing, look down and keep on singing!
We can go anywhere.
Are you there?
Are you there, or are you just a decoy dream in my head?
Am I home or am I simply tumbling all alone?

You would not believe your eyes.
You’d think me rude, but I would just stand and stare.
I’d like to make myself believe.
It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay awake when I’m asleep.
Everything is never as it seems.
I’d get a thousand hugs.
They tried to teach me how to dance.
The disco ball is just hanging by a thread.
Leave my door open just a crack.
Please take me away from here.
I feel like such an insomniac.
Why do I tire of counting sheep?
I’m far too tired to fall asleep.
I’m weird 'cause I hate goodbyes.
I got misty eyes as they said farewell.
My dreams are bursting at the seams

The Tip Of The Iceberg
Welcome back winter once again.
Put on your warm fuzzy sweater.
The snowflakes fall gently to the ground.
Your shivers freeze all the rivers around.
But I keep you warm.
The cold wind blows at precise rates.
I’ve got my ice skates on.
You keep me warm.
Peer over the edge.
Can you see me?
I’ll travel the sub-zero tundra.
I’ll brave glaciers and frozen lakes.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
I’ll do whatever it takes to change.
Farewell powdery paradise.
We’d rather skate on the thinnest ice.
So we snuggle close in the darkness and keep each other so warm.

Vanilla Twilight
The stars lean down to kiss you.
I lie awake and miss you.
Pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere.
I’ll doze off safe and soundly.
I’ll miss your arms around me.
I wish you were here.
But it’s not the same without you.
It takes two to whisper quietly.
The silence isn’t so bad.
The spaces between my fingers are right where yours fit perfectly.
I haven’t slept in two days.
Cold nostalgia chills me to the bone.
I’ll sit on the front porch all night.
When I think of you, I don’t feel so alone.
As many times as I blink, I’ll think of you tonight.
I’ll taste the sky and feel alive again.
I’ll forget the world that I knew.
I swear I won’t forget you.
Oh darling, I wish you were here.

Tidal Wave
I wish I could cross my arms, and cross your mind.
All my life I wish I broke mirrors, instead of promises.
All I see, is a shattered conscience staring right back at me.
I wish I had covered all my tracks completely cause I’m so afraid.
Is that the light at the far end of the tunnel or just the train?
Help is on the way.
I forget the last time I felt brave.
I just recall insecurity.
It came down like a tidal wave
How much longer can this drama afford to run?
Fate looks sharp.
All my heavy hopes just pull me back down again.
I was given grace and love.
I was blind but now I can see.
I found a new hope from above, and courage swept over me.
It hurts just to wake up.
Alone on the outside, so tired of looking in.
The end is uncertain and I’ve never been so afraid.
I don’t need a telescope to see that there’s hope.
That makes me feel brave.

‘No matter how futile the effort.’

merman!5sos night with c-lifflings and anarchyaustralia !!!

merman!ashton had always been careful to avoid letting his secret slip. for years he had managed to stay above ground as often as he could, avoiding the transformation whenever possible. however, merfolk could not survive if they were without saltwater for an extended time; they would grow sickly and weak rapidly. so it was once a month that ashton visited, slipping under the waves for just a night to keep himself healthy. his family appreciated his visits, sometimes too much, to the point of asking him to remain with them and not return to land, but ashton always refused. the world above was limitless, he explained to his mother. if she had the nerve to leave the water, she would understand. in his pursuit to keep his true identity a secret, ashton kept himself very secluded, keeping his nose down in school and avoiding creating too-close of relationships with others. and that all was going well… until he met her. her. the most beautiful, fascinating creature he had ever seen, above or below the surface. he was entranced by her, the way she walked, the sound of her voice, the curvature of her body and the planes of her face. and in return, his obsession was returned. she didn’t understand the beautiful boy who watched her, or why he only talked to her out of everyone in the world. she didn’t understand why it was her. she didn’t understand him, why he was the way he was, quiet and brooding and isolated. it took him months to work up the nerve to ask her on a date, and even after she agreed, he felt horrible the day of. in his body, in his mind… what was he thinking? she was human, it couldn’t work, he was insane for ever believing that he could be with a girl, a human girl. as the hour approached, ashton couldn’t bear to go. he laid in his bed, curled into a ball, too overcome with worry and a rock in his stomach to even move. an hour passed from when they were supposed to meet. sitting in a coffee shop, she was sick with worry. worry for herself, that she had been stood up, or for him, that he was okay. she had always heard that he lived alone on a houseboat docked in a nearby harbour, and after a few minutes of sitting alone, she couldn’t stand it anymore. she practically ran to the harbour, searching through the sailboats and fishing boats to find the little houseboat, moored in the very last slot. taking care not to fall in on the narrow walkway over the water, she approached the door and knocked on the door loudly, unsure of how how to proceed. anger, if he had stood her up? more worry, if he was ill? inside, she heard a lock click, then the door swing open to reveal ashton. he was hanging onto the doorknob for dear life, and she couldn’t help but gasp at him. before her very eyes, he was turning a deep shade of green, nearly emerald. as she reached out to help him, to hold him, he collapsed, falling atop her and knocking them both to the ground; over the edge of the boat. she screamed as they fell to the water, but as ashton slipped below the surface, the effect was instantaneous. his legs pressed together, and then taken over altogether by shiny, emerald scales. it took him a moment to gather his bearings, to strengthen and breathe in the ocean water he had been unconsciously craving. as the seconds ticked by, it became clear to him; his secret was out. he had taken her down with him. he opened his eyes, searching desperately for a sign of her… then to have his eyes fall on a strikingly familiar face, with confused but comforting eyes that were staring back at him. her tail was a silvery blue, but other than that, everything was was the same. the curvature of her body. the planes of her face. the sound of her voice.

and then suddenly, everything became clear to them both.

(holy scissors, that was the dumbest ending and the longest dumb paragraph that was supposed to pass as a blurb… sorry, hope you like it)

Lesson 1.2: Crystals!

Now that you read our first post and you got some crystals, whatchu gonna do wit’ em?

The first thing you should do when you get your crystals is dedicate them. Sit down with them in a quiet place away from large pieces of technology. Meditate with them. Hold them in your palms and declare that you want these crystals to be used for nothing other than light, love and healing (or whatever you want). Thank the universe for sending you these crystals.

After that, the second thing to know when you get your crystals is that they must be charged. Crystals don’t die like batteries, but they need to be recharged every now and then so that their energy can be stronger. Since they’re so sensitive to thought and your own energy, they need to be cleansed of the negative energy that you and someone else might have put into them. If you go to a party with very negative people every Friday night and you bring a piece of quartz crystal to protect you against that negative energy, after a while you’re going to need to charge and clean it to help get rid of the energy it has retained.

  • One way to do this is with bigger crystals. Put a smaller crystal in the middle and bigger crystals on the outside in a grid form like shown below.
  • The smaller one will receive energy from the bigger one. You can also charge your crystals by sitting them on a cluster.
  • But the easiest way to do this, a way that will have you spend no money, is to give them sunlight! Crystals are a lot like us, and they receive energy from the sun just like us. It will recharge and store the sun’s energy! (However, some crystals are not suitable for the sun all the time. For example, if you put a dark piece of amethyst out in the sun, the color might fade or it might get brown spots on it.)
  • Clean your crystals by allowing them to bathe in saltwater for some time. If possible, use pure sea salt or pink Himalayan salt, and make sure the water is as free of chemicals as possible (no tap water).
  • You can also let your crystals bathe in the ocean if you have the privilege of living close to a clean one.
  • Purchase some sage smudge sticks, burn them, and pass them over your crystals for some time to cleanse them.
  • Letting them sit in brown rice for 24 hours centers/grounds the crystals and balances their male and female energy (yes, they do have male and female energy).

Now you need to figure out how to use crystals.

  • Your chakra system picks up frequencies, including the ones from crystals. Every crystal gives off energy that resonates to at least one chakra or more specifically. You can place a crystal over the chakra that it resonates with on your body and lay there with them on you, meditating. You can also put them where they would be on your chakras under your mattress so that while you sleep, the crystals are affecting your chakras. (When you do this, you might wake up about 4 hours after you fell asleep with full energy, and that’s because the crystals were charging you up. This usually happens if you do it the day after you charged them. You might also have crazy cool dreams. These are just possibilities.)
  • Usually when you buy crystals from a store, nearby the stand is a little box of drawstring pouches. They are there so that you can use them for keeping pocket stones. If you need help with a certain aspect of your life, choose a crystal that you think will aid you with this problem. Put it in your little pouch and keep it in your pocket for a certain amount of time. You can also go to a metaphysical store and have them wrap the crystal for you with wire or hemp so you can carry it around as a necklace.

Or you can do it using the blind method. Pick a random crystal without learning its properties and carry it around daily for 30 days. After the 30 days, read up on the properties and see if it has affected you in that way. (This is not a determining method to see how crystals work, it’s just kind of fun. Other factors can interfere with the crystal’s performance over the 30 days.)

  • Here’s another way to use crystals (Jordan from Spirit Science calls this Spirit Water). Get a glass or bottle of clean, chemical-free water. Put a crystal in it and wait some time (maybe 24 hours or less) before consuming it. During this time, it’s good to meditate with the water to project love onto it or place it in the moonlight/sunlight while the crystals are in the water. You can put two crystals in there; get creative with it! When people try this and drink the water, it usually tastes smoother and cleaner than when they first poured it. You can also keep a regular, untouched glass of water next to your Spirit Water and compare both.
  • Crystal grids! My favorite! A crystal grid is an energetic grid that you can create around your house that fills your house/room with energy. Connect the crystals together by touching each one with a crystal wand and your pure intention. It would be great if you did this in a geometrical pattern.
  • Meditate with crystals! Sit in a lotus position with one in each hand, place them nearby, or put one in your lap. Meditating for manifestation with crystals that are good for that, or for abundance with crystals that are good for that, may help you. However, crystals will help the universe manifest something you need in your life. They may not directly help you manifest a Lamborghini. Same for abundance; you can count on them to help the universe give you an abundance of intuition or love, things that can help you get money, but maybe they won’t directly send you cash.
  • It has been reported that if you put a quartz crystal on the carburetor or fuel line, gas mileage can be increased by up to 50%! Or you can put crystals on or toward broken car equipment. You can place them on the dashboard to ensure safe travels.
  • Put a crystal near your computer or phone. Most electronic equipment gives off EMF’s (electromagnetic fields) and too much absorption of this energy can cause things like headaches, depression, memory loss, irritability, chronic fatigue, loss of energy, and a weakened immune system. Crystals can absorb and block this energy for you if you keep them near or on your electronic equipment (however, every few weeks you need to remove them and cleanse them).

I know some of this may sound like a stretch, but if it resonates with you, do some more research! Or try it out yourself. I hope you learned something. Part three coming soon. Love and oneness. :)

drowning in saltwater & light

The first time I saw the sea I fell in love
every footstep on sandy shores a kiss taken over by tide
each imprint a story the ocean hoarded.
I understood, I did that too
tried to hold on to love like
souvenirs. memorabilia. haunts of a lost time.
Seafoam is a liminal space; it exists until you meddle with it
I am learning to appreciate this temporality of love.
Growing up to this world I understood two things:
thunderstorms drop rain, and women are born to pain.
the rainwater hides your tears, and crying
makes you accustomed to looking at the world through saltwater,
I guess, and keeping eyes open underwater, easy.

So: dear moon, wash your tide over me, send
your ocean abyss for me, in that void let me see what can come to be.
I will wear my heart on my fingertips, susceptible to frostbite
my heart bleeding in black and white
red against cyan, yellow and blue, magenta on green
mermaids wearing sundrop crystals in coral reefs, us.
Dear ocean, the way you hold me gets my words
caught in the hollow of my throat,
so have my puffy kisses for keeps
do as this conch shell whispers:
girl just, stay with me, stay with
me, stay with me

The Signs + Owl City

Aries: Shine Your Way

'Cause the spaces between my fingers
Are right where yours fit perfectly”

Something I’m tired of seeing...

Saltwater people ignoring schooling/shoaling fishes schooling/shoaling. :I

There are a lot of schooling/shoaling saltwater fish, and this aspect of keeping them is entirely ignored by 99% of saltwater people I’ve ever seen met or heard of. Yes, keeping them in a school/shoal means a bigger tank. Yes, sometimes that means an extremely large tank (100+ gallons). Yes, that means you probably shouldn’t get them.

So, here are some commonly kept and largely unhappily kept schooling/shoaling saltwater fish. Sometimes their schools are loose, sometimes they need certain ratios of sexes, sometimes their shoaling habits change as they age, but these ARE schooling/shoaling fish!

  • Bangaii cardinals
  • PJ Cardinals
  • Green reef chromis
  • Psuedanthias (Anthias)
  • MOST (all?) damsels including yellow tail damsels, domino damsels, sergeant majors,  and three stripe damsels.
  • Chalk basslets
  • Most butterflies
  • Most squirrelfish

It’s just… we don’t see people ignoring this need in freshwater fish. You would never tell someone “Yeah, sure you can put a single congo tetra, a single swordtail, and three neons in a 20 gallon. That would be fine!” but you see the equivalent in saltwater tanks all the time. I just???? Don’t know why???
