salamandre

La salamandre de François Ier

La salamandre va connaître un succès sans précédent sous François Ier, qui l'adopte comme corps de devise avant même son accession au trône. La salamandre est représentée assise dans les flammes et crachant des gouttes d'eau.

At the risk of sounding biased, I could say make trolls salamanders/newts, since you'll be killing a lot of birds what with "hair" (which could be elaborate crests or gills), classic regeneration, aversion to sunlight (plenty of troglodytic species, plus olms) and just the whole idea of a gluttonous stinky monster. Think on it as fairy-fied Gulpers

It would probably be more accurate to say trolls are just amphibians in my setting, since they don’t really fit any one known clade particularly well:

The troll ancestor might not be too different from a salamander.  Their “ears” definitely take something from the feather gills of critters like axolotls.  But I kinda love the idea that they’re just this weird collection of traits that’s hard to pin down - that feels very trollish to me.

Newts do have some explicit representation in the Bestiary though!

Salamandrals, which come in a variety of species and sizes, are basically big newts with extreme fire resistance thanks to their total attunement to Flame magic.  They even have renown in spellcasting circles as being one of the four “elemental” species, being considered natural masters of flame magic.  They are also extremely popular mounts for goblins (or at least the species that are big enough to serve as mounts are).
