Feast of All Saints – Breviary Meditations
* Taken from Daily Breviary Meditations: Meditations for
Every Day on the Scriptural Lessons of the Roman Breviary, in accordance
with the Encyclical “Divino Afflante,” written by the
Most Rev. Joseph Angrisani, Bishop of Casale-Monferrato, and translated
by Rev. Father Joseph A. McMullin of St. Charles Seminary at
Philadelphia, PA (Vol. 4; New York: Benziger Brothers, Inc., 1954).
Article XXII of the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion states:
Romish Doctrine concerning Purgatory, Pardons, Worshipping
and Adoration, as well of Images as of Relics, and also Invocation of
Saints, is a fond thing, vainly invented, and grounded upon no
warranty of Scripture, but rather repugnant to the Word of God.
Because I care about my fellow Anglicans, and because I care about the legacy of Anglicanism itself, I must lovingly proclaim the truth to the best of my ability, praying to God our Father in the hope that those who have drifted away from the via media will see their error and return wholly to the wholesome doctrine of the Church.
Almighty God, whose name is a strong tower in which we your unworthy servants find rest for our souls, grant us grace, we beseech thee, so not to be
tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, but to rest surely on the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.
(Originally this was meant to be a bit of an exaggeration, but I’m actually also kind of serious.)
Halloween - “eve of all saints” (scottish + old eng.)
From Old English “hallow ” (holy person, saint) and Scottish “llhallow-even” (Eve of All Saints). All Saints Day is a Roman Catholic celebration on November 1st, so the last day of October is the Eve of All Saints. The last day of October was also, on the old Celtic calendar, “Old Year’s Night” - a pagan holiday. It was believed that on this day, ghosts roamed the earth, and people needed to disguise themselves similarly to blend in and not be noticed by the roaming phantoms.
