Make-Believe [Hunk/Allura]

I finally got around to finishing this fic! Hope you all enjoy it!

Summary: Allura closed her eyes and let out a soft laugh, one hand covering her face. Hunk’s heart squeezed for what seemed like the thousandth time that evening, but he didn’t let it detract him from his mission. Allura had to like these cookies – if only so she could continue on with those wide, dazzling smiles.

“It’s only a paper moon, sailing over a cardboard sea…”

Hunk continued to murmur one of his old classical favorites as he plopped a large bag onto the kitchen counter. He peered into the bag, brimming with fresh ingredients, and his smile grew wider. It had finally happened; he had all the substitutes necessary to make his mother’s signature lemon sugar cookies. The last planet they had saved was able to supply them with an assortment of local fruit, and Hunk had nearly cried when he caught sight of a basket filled with a yellow-green citrus. On that planet they called them lusutra – and Hunk had tested the fruit himself to make absolutely sure, but yes – it was as close to a lemon as he would probably get. He had thanked the villagers profusely for their gift, and raced off to the kitchen the moment the paladins departed the planet.

He had yet to announce to the others what he was baking. Lance had been curious, sifting around his room and eyeing the newly-acquired citrus. But Hunk had kept his quiet and gave Lance a mischievous wink before tossing him out. This was going to be a surprise – it had been awhile since the paladins had had anything they could liken to a dessert. And the last time he had tried to make something like a cake, he (and Pidge, who had offered her taste-testing services) were bed-ridden for almost two days. Shiro had smiled, but asked Hunk to refrain from experimenting much further.

“Voltron isn’t much help to anyone if two of its paladins are out of commission because of a botched cake.”

Hunk’s smile fell, and he almost frowned as he remembered Shiro’s words. He blinked at the ingredients, and wondered if he should continue with his baking. Maybe it wouldn’t be appropriate – Shiro had been missing for more than two weeks now, and Keith was on constant patrol, searching for his most trusted companion everywhere Voltron was needed. Hunk was sad too: of course he was, Shiro was his friend! But Keith was almost obsessive in his searches, as if without Shiro, he felt lost. Maybe even alone.

Well, maybe this will be a good pick-me-up for everyone, including Keith, Hunk’s smile returned, and he nodded at the ingredients, determination setting in. Shiro would have approved, he was sure of it. This treat would help bring them all together, give them something to look forward to. Maybe it could even get a smile out of that poor, despondent soul.

As Hunk was about to reach into the bag and start setting the counter up for prep, he heard footsteps outside the kitchen’s entrance. They weren’t loud or fast, so he knew it wasn’t Lance. These footsteps were a little slow, deliberate, trained. As if every step taken would be scrutinized, evaluated, and was meant for the consumption of large, pleading audiences.

He knew of only one person who walked like that.

day 4: favorite pairing

Say, it’s only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me

Yes, it’s only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me

Without your love
It’s a honky-tonk parade
Without your love
It’s a melody played in a penny arcade

It’s a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you believed in me

It’s phony it’s plain to see
How happy I would be
If you believed in me

Realizing that the episode title for 10x04...

…is “Paper Moon” immediately brings me back to my crazy spec about the show introducing a sort of character that could be Dean’s kid, because well… That movie is basically alluding to just that. A con man, driving round the country without having any true meaningful emotional ties to other people and doing all kinds of shady things but somehow - because he is visiting the funeral of an ild flame - ending up with her kid that sort of brings out another side in him.

Sorry, but even if SPN won’t introduce a character that could be Dean’s son, the plot of the movie would kind of fit beautifully to the arc of Demon!Dean becoming more human again. :’)

That being said and aside from “Paper Moon” as such of course seeming reminiscent of Crowley’s “Let’s take a howl at that moon” (which I guess will be worked into the episode as well), it’s the lyrics of the theme song that also feel fitting to Dean’s arc.

“Say, it’s only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you BELIEVED in me

Yes, it’s only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you BELIEVED in me

Without your LOVE
It’s a honky tonk parade
Without your LOVE
It’s a melody played in a penny arcade

It’s a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn’t be make-believe
If you BELIEVED in me”

To me this absolutely would fit to Demon!Dean starting to realize that all the partying and drinking and not giving a damn is an ~act/fakeas well and that it can only mask but not truly heal or solve the deeper underlying problems that caused Dean to embrace not feeling anything at all. And well… In the end SPN had always been about BELIEVING in one another but most of all LOVE.
