Andrewz Idol, a talent competition at St. Andrew High

Andrewz Idol: We did it! This year’s staging of the Andrewz Idol competition at St. Andrew High (Friday, November 18) was the most successful to date – record turnout from the students, pulsating entertainment and unbelievable fun and camaraderie between the present and the “Old Girls!” Click below to view a 1-min recap: -

With anticipation and excitement at fever pitch within the last week leading up to the Finale, the girls quickly “gobbled up” the over 250 pre-sold tickets. All ten (10) contestants had embarked on a marketing blitz throughout the school, drumming up personal support which was later translated into an unprecedented high level of voting in the People’s Choice competition – eventually won by Miss Jordanne Hunter.

The three judges, all past students aka ‘Old Girls’ – Nadine Sutherland, Carol Dexter and Karen Henry - added to the enhanced quality and presentation of this year’s competition as they exercised their mastery of music and the performing arts in the execution of their roles. The response from the girls to the contestants and the performers was overwhelming and brought much delight to all the patrons.

The performances from the guest artistes, interspersed between that of the finalists, only served to titillate the appetite of the demanding patrons – from the suave and innocently sweet delivery of Delando (sponsored by Digicel), to the effervescent display from Propa Fade, Jahmiel and Eva Hype, to the electrifying dance moves from RDX to the deafening screams in response to Popcaan’s explosive delivery!…what a show!

The afternoon’s proceeding all unfolded under the motherly watch of Commander-in-Chief, Mrs. Sharon Reid, ably assisted by Mrs. Bowes and the team of staff members who were also in attendance. Special thanks to the group of Sixth Formers who lent their invaluable “expertise” in the handling of such school events. A special “big up” to the SAOGA volunteers and contributors who made this all possible, with special kudos to Anya Thompson for her on-the-ground execution and for helping to keep the momentum going throughout the competition and also to our vivacious M.C Trudi Howe. And of course, the Reggae Jammin crew served up their mouth-watering burgers, jerk sausages and rotisserie chicken…food wid attitude!

At the end of the show the following winners emerged: -

1st Place & 2011 Idol Winner – Karece Brown – won a Digicel Sponsored Blackberry telephone. Karece performed Adele’s Someone Like You

2nd Place – Crystal Gibson – won a Microwave Oven – courtesy of ATL

3rd Place – Ockera Moulton – won a Gift Certificate from Jencare Skin Farm

4th Place – Joscine Rodney – won a Gift Certificate from X-tras

5th Place – Akacia Forbes – won a Gift Certificate from X-tras

People’s Choice Winner – Miss Jordanne Hunter

There was no official judge’s report, but they were pleased that the person who placed first in the auditions (Karece Brown) also came 1st in the finals, and that the girls were more composed on stage than they were at the auditions. Well done to the SAOGA team as they aim to find more ways to engage the school community and help to build our alma mater, St. Andrew High for Girls!
