Afternoon shots from a hike yesterday in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Springtime has flooded the desert with palo verde blossoms and the sweet smell of mesquites while shaded canyons still hide the chill of winter. On this trek I visited a large boulder bridge in a rocky area I call the Eyrie for its numerous deposits of bones and owl pellets, underneath which were growing a few stalks of poisonous desert tobacco. Further up, the bleached ribs of saguaros leaned across a rocky sunward slope, listless in their memories of summer. Sheer views streaked with patches of light and dark gave way to a final sight of Piestewa in the sunset before I turned and started the long descent home in pre-dusk shadow.
