Nissan to recall Altimas for third time to fix hood latches

DETROIT - Nissan is recalling nearly 930,000 Altima midsize cars worldwide — some for a third time — to fix a latch problem that could let the hood fly open while the cars are moving.

The new recall covers cars from the 2013 to 2015 model years including 846,000 in the U.S. that were made at factories in Smyrna, Tennessee, and Canton, Mississippi.

Nissan says paint can flake off the latch, exposing bare metal. Over time, the latches can rust and cause the secondary hood latch to remain open. If the main latch isn’t closed and the car is driven, the secondary latch may not hold the hood down, Nissan said in documents posted Friday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

The company says that if the hood opens while the cars are in motion, it could obstruct the driver’s vision and cause a crash. But Nissan spokesman Steve Yaeger said the company has no reports of any crashes or injuries.

Nissan says in two previous recalls in 2014 and 2015, dealers adjusted latches and applied lubricant. But if the lubricant wasn’t put on evenly, the problem could persist.

Nissan will notify owners and replace the latches for free starting in mid-February.

Automakers to recall 5M vehicles for another air bag problem
By Tom Krisher, The Associated Press

DETROIT - Another problem has developed with automotive air bags, and this one will bring recalls of up to 5 million vehicles worldwide.

Continental Automotive Systems says in documents filed with the U.S. government that moisture can get inside its air bag control computers, causing the power supplies to corrode and fail. If that happens, air bags may not inflate in a crash or they could deploy without a crash.

The documents, posted Thursday on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, said Continental will notify automakers, who will recall cars dating as far back as 2006.

Already Honda, Fiat Chrysler, Volkswagen and Mercedes have issued recalls, and some unidentified Mazda and Volvo Truck vehicles are included. Continental says less than 2 million of the affected vehicles are in the U.S.

Automakers will replace the computers at no cost to owners, according to documents. Honda reported two injuries from the problem.

The announcement comes in the middle of a crisis involving Takata Corp. air bag inflators. About 24 million U.S. vehicles are being recalled for that problem, which is the largest automotive recall in U.S. history. Takata’s inflators can explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and sending shrapnel into the passenger compartment. At least 11 people have died worldwide from the problem, and 139 have been injured.

In the documents, Continental says its problem first surfaced in January 2008 when it analyzed a malfunctioning control unit that was removed from a Mercedes. The company continued to investigate, and in early 2011, Continental was told of two inadvertent air bag deployments in Mercedes and Fiat Chrysler vehicles.

Last year, Honda reported two malfunctions in crashes involving 2008 Accords, and U.S. safety regulators began investigating, according to the documents.

Continental said it knows of more than 600 parts that were returned due to the problem.

On Wednesday night, Honda said it would recall 364,787 2008 to 2010 Accord sedans worldwide because of the issue. The company says the air bags may not inflate in a crash. Honda said it has two reports of people being hurt because the air bags didn’t deploy.

On Thursday, Fiat Chrysler announced the recall of 112,000 2009 Dodge Journeys and 2008 and 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans for the same problem. The Fiat Chrysler recall also includes the 2009 Volkswagen Routan minivan, which was made by FCA. Fiat Chrysler recalled vehicles that do not have Takata air bags.

Last year, Mercedes recalled 126,260 C-Class cars from 2008 and 2009 and 2010 GLK350 vehicles.

The U.S. safety investigation began in August after NHTSA found 19 complaints from drivers that air bags didn’t inflate in crashes of older Honda Accords.

A driver in Belleview, Florida, was injured when his car hit a concrete wall at 50 miles per hour and the air bags didn’t inflate, according to one complaint. Several others said the computer had to be replaced and they were charged around $500.

“This also means that the safety of the vehicle passengers and operators are in jeopardy and potentially face serious injury or death,” another complainant wrote. People filing complaints are not identified in the NHTSA database.

Continental says any malfunction will cause the air bag control computer to shut down, and that will trigger a dashboard warning light.

Honda said it would notify owners about the problem, but repair parts won’t be available until fall. Drivers with an activated supplemental restraint system light should visit a dealer for a repair from the parts on hand, the company said.

Tinder has finally added a health safety section to its website

Proving once again that embarrassment really is a powerful motivator, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) has successfully convinced Tinder to add a health safety section to its website, that includes a link to Healthvana’s free HIV and STD testing site locator. This move was likely prompted by the very public billboards that have loomed over the Los Angeles skyline for the last several months. And while Tinder reportedly issued a cease and desist letter to the AHF, it took these latest health measures (not legal action), to get the Foundation to take the signs down.

“Tinder is proud to empower millions of users to create relationships,” said Dr. Jessica Carbino, lead sociologist at Tinder in a prepared statement. “An important aspect of any healthy relationship — whether formed on Tinder or otherwise — is ensuring sexual health and safety. We’d be delighted to see other major social networks follow in our footsteps in educating the public.” Dating apps have been blamed for the dramatic rise in STDs and STIs in the last couple years, with Tinder and Grindr receiving the vast majority of the blame both at home and abroad. And while Tinder’s decision to implement a health safety tab doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s taking responsibility for the disturbing trend, at the very least, it looks to be taking the responsible route forward.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently noted that the majority of new sexually transmitted disease cases have affected young people, a demographic that is also most active on mobile devices and, by extension, many of these dating apps. “This is why it is such welcome news that Tinder will add a health safety section with a link to Healthvana, making it easier for people to find testing locations through an easily accessible, modern platform,” said Whitney Engeran Cordova, senior director, public health division for AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “And we hope to see other dating sites do the same.”

RelatedDating apps Tinder and Grindr linked to a surge in crimes in the UK

Healthvana, the tool of choice for Tinder, is a cloud-based technology platform that includes electronic patient intake, electronic test results delivery with next steps, electronic reminders, and an HIV and STD testing locator. Since its 2014 launch, the company has delivered over 200,000 test results to patients across the United States, and with Tinder as a new partner, it seems that this number will only increase.

“Staying healthy in today’s dating world means getting tested regularly, practicing safe sex, and having honest conversations about your HIV and STD status,” said Ramin Bastani, CEO of Healthvana. “Healthvana empowers people with actionable health information at their fingertips so they can make better decisions. We already have hundreds of thousands of people using our testing locator to find free, quick, and confidential testing at sexual health clinics near them”

Automakers to recall 5M vehicles for another air bag problem

DETROIT | Another problem has developed with automotive air bags, and this one will bring recalls of up to 5 million vehicles worldwide.
