sacred lion

~ Panel with striding lion.
Culture: Neo-Babylonian
Date: 604-562 B.C.
Medium: Brick, glazed.

From the source: The lion was sacred to Ishtar, the Babylonian goddess of love and war. This striding beast is one of more than a hundred that once lined the lower portion of the walls of a processional way that passed through the Ishtar Gate in ancient Babylon. During the New Year festival, images of the gods were carried down this street, named ‘the enemy shall never pass’ (aibur-shabu in Babylonian). The lions provided a dramatic, heraldic approach to the gate and served as symbolic protectors and guides for those participating in the ritual.

“The more doors you open to the mysteries, or sacred knowledge, the smaller you feel. And because you begin to feel smaller and smaller until your ego disappears, the more humble you become. Therefore, any man who behaves arrogantly with what little he knows, or claims to know all, only reveals to all that he really knows nothing. Real greatness does not reside inside those who feel large. The truly wise are meek. Yet being small and meek do not make one weak. Arming oneself with true knowledge generates strong confidence and a bold spirit that makes you a lion of God. The Creator does not want you to suffer, yet we are being conditioned by society to accept suffering, weak and passive dispositions under the belief that such conditions are favorable by God. Weakness is not a virtue praised by God. How could he desire for you to be weak if he tells us to stand by our conscience? Doing so requires strength. However, there is a difference between arrogance when inflating your ego, and confidence when one truly gets closer to God. One feels large, while the other feels small. Why? Because a man of wisdom understands that he is just a small pea in a sea of infinite atoms, and that in the end — we are all connected. And did you not know that the smaller a creature is, the bolder its spirit?”

Glowing Connections

Fandom: Voltron
Pairing: A sprinkle of Klance, a mention of Lancelot
Characters: Lance, Pidge, Allura, Coran, Hunk, Keith
Summary: The bond between Paladin and Lion is sacred and unimaginable. It is a connection between two souls completely attuned to each other and it is a bond that grows even stronger with time an care. It is a bond that can grow so strong it can leave a physical trace on a Paladin’s body. A mark that proves how connected a Palain and Lion truly is.

So why does Lance, of all people, seem to hate the markings so?

AN - A terribly named fanfic based on the amazing glowing tattoos art by @jen-iii

Pidge let out a shout as sharp claws dug into the spot her green shoulder pad met her white chest plate, a crack in the armour that the creature she was fighting used to tear the chuck of metal off.  She cried out again as the harsh treatment damaged her shoulder and a growl followed her shout.  Lance held his weapon firmly, aim focused on the aliens own weak spot, in only a moment the creature would move its own shoulder just so, causing the protective scales to lift and give Lance enough time for him bullet to hit its mark.

All he had to do was focus.

Black Paladin!Lance Masterlist (1)

Heaven’s Got a Plan for You by tobytrash (6/? | 31,513 | Teen And Up)

Team Voltron has never felt as vulnerable as it does now. With the absence of their leader, Shiro, the responsibility of leading the team has been thrusted onto Keith’s shoulders, and the reassignments of Lions are in order. However, Lance is not as ready to accept this new change as the rest of the team.

And neither is the Black Lion.

It’s been one month since the defeat of Zarkon.

The five Lions have convened and chosen Lance as the new Black Paladin- but this decision causes rifts and wrinkles in the delicate emotional atmosphere of Team Voltron after Shiro’s disappearance. With Universe in war-torn despair, Voltron is needed now more than ever- and the team will have to adjust to the new mode and (re)learn to work together.

And all the while, they’re searching for Shiro: Where is he? How can they find him? Will they like what they find?

tell me when you hear my silence by ciuucalata (2/? | 5,774 | Teen And Up)

With Shiro gone, the others need some time to get through this. But his disappearance instead of making them come together, it just makes them grow apart from eachother. Lance sees this and he is trying so hard to keep them together, but most of the time it feels hopeless. There’s only so much helping he can do when it feels like nobody wants it.

The lion switch just. Doesn't seem right to me? Like this bond is supposed to be a deep thing right? But in season 2 Keith just pilots black with no issue, and with the lion switch in season 3, it seems like the writers completely forgot about this "bond that cannot be forced." It just seems rushed (so far. My opinion may change when we see how it's handled in S3) and makes the lions seem less sentient than they are and more like machines. Idk just doesn't seem like the best option to me

s1: the bond between paladin and lion is sacred and cannot be forced

s3: lol just kidding let’s play paladin hot potato

anonymous asked:

The whole lion switching thing honestly makes me so upset like??? After the first two two seasons about how the bond between paladins and lions is sacred and unique, especially between Keith and Red, now they're going to change things up? As an homage to the original series, but not because it makes any plot or in-universe sense??...Not to mention that it throws everything off from a marketing perspective. I just. It really bugs me!

NOTHING IS GONNA COLOR CODE AND IM GONNA BE SO SAD ABOUT IT ;; at least switch armor pls guys lmao the color differences are gonna annoy me,,

And ya I feel you anon, having like three pilots switch lions around does kinda cheapen the whole “unique bond for you and you alone” thing. I know it’s a homage to the original, but after two seasons of all the lion bonding we’ve seen already, I think this is all going to be very temporary. While switching lions was definitely foreshadowed, they’re already all so attached to their own. I mean, you can’t tell me these three will never pilot their respective lions again:

The thing about each pilot and their quintessence matching the lion really bothers me though, so I tried to come up with a possible explanation here. Basically, since quintessence is this malleable material that can be manipulated or corrupted (gold vs purple quintessence, altean vs druid, warping quintessence with magic, ect) I was thinking maybe your own quintessence could be altered and shaped by the people you interact with as well as how you grow as a person. So over time maybe your quintessence can change or become more compatible with someone else’s.

But one way or another, I really do hope we get an answer about that. Because quintessence is just so important and comes up in so many plot points; I’d hate to see its significance to the paladins just written out so they can magically swap lions
