Rebels Re-Watch: 3.13 Trials of the Darksaber  & 3.14 Legacy of Mandalore

Trials of the Darksaber

Hera consistently prioritizes the needs of the Rebellion and the cause over the individual needs of her crew and here is another example. She knows how hard this is for Sabine, but she feels she has to ask Sabine because the Rebellion needs Mandalore. Once Sabine agrees, Hera repeatedly urges Kanan to speed up her training. Meanwhile, Kanan, the reluctant Jedi, is the one to offer Sabine an out. Once she agrees, he wants to take things slow and do it right. No judging, but it’s clear what their respective priorities are.

As someone who has studied multiple fencing styles and weapons, I can attest that Sabine’s insistence that her skill with multiple weapons means she can skip  lightsaber basics is a really bad idea. Yes, a familiarity with martial arts will give you have a better sense of your body than someone with out training, but it can mess you up too. Different weapons have different forms, different functions, and thus require different techniques. Sabine’s initial technique is a mix of staff (jabbing moves, overestimating length of blade) and knife (swiping, in too close).      A few days training in the desert is not enough to master a new weapon, no matter how good you are with other ones.

Legacy of Mandalore

I still can’t get over Sabine’s fight with Gar Saxon and the way it ties her to her space family. She uses Rau’s bag of tricks to keep herself alive. She wields Ezra’s lightsaber, and she used Kanan’s teachings to win. Her claiming the moral high ground by refusing to kill is something she learned from space!fam too. And then her mom pulls an Iron and shoots her dishonorable opponent when he tries to shoot her in the back after surrendering.

Okay, so Ezra is supposed to be like 16-17 in this but he acts a lot younger. Why is he such a condescending jerk about Sabine learning to wield the saber? Why does he feel the need to rub the fact Sabine never mentioned him in Tristan’s face? WTF?

One character note that did make sense was his complete inability to understand the possibility of toxic family relationships. He came from a loving family and lost them young. For him, family=safety & belonging and he’s been trying to get that feeling back since he came aboard. He doesn’t understand that not every family is like that and is consistently surprised when his crew mates have issues with theirs. It comes up at least once a season.

Some photos of my Riyo Chuchi cosplay that nearly killed me :p I’ll be making some improvements soon but for the shoot I’m happy with how it turned out :)

Today, Sabine and Nick organized one of their most successful protests. Sabine was surprised when a model  from the Fashion District joined (this probably attracted many of the other protesters).

After the protest, Sabine met a young girl, about her age, who was admiring her political mural. Her name is Chloe, she’s a nurse and she lives in the Spice District.

I realize it may seem like I’m incapable of drawing anything other than star wars ladies, but with the whole Forces of Destiny announcement I’m waaay too hyped! Also, this one does include Hera since so many of you were upset the last one didn’t

This is available as prints, phone cases, shirts and more in my shops here and here :)

No me gustan las promesas. Son un paso a la esperanza y la esperanza nos lleva a la desilusion.

Lucasfilm announces ‘Forces of Destiny’ – A Continuing Series of Animated Shorts Based Around their HEROINES!!

Looks kinda like the DC Girl Power shorts, only Star Wars. Featuring, Leia, Rey, Jyn, Sabine, Hera and Ahsoka. Not only that, but Daisy Ridley, Felicity Jones, Tiya Sircar and Ashley Eckstein. Lupita Nyong’o will narrate the shorts as Maz Kanata.

Oh, and of course there are already toys in the works.
