“The thaw” is a name for the period of Nikita Chruschtschow’s rule (1953-1964). The thaw - because after Stalin’s death ideological and political pressure was broken. Process of liberalization embraced all spheres of life.

The thaw was a time when art and culture really flourished. A number of great Russian directors started to work those days:  Andrei Tarkovsky, Larisa Shepitko, Alexei German, Elem Klimov.
