‘’Which African writers have influenced you besides Chinua Achebe?’’
I pondered this question for a while before I thought of making a list of writers who equally influenced my hunger for African history… my history. After scouring my memory and the internet, I have made my list of favourite East African Literary figures/Writers. Most of these novels, plays and Poetry are reminiscent of my high school literature curriculum. Others are just out of curiosity for fellow East African literary voices that I want to hear. I have compiled a list of authors from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi hoping that you share the same hunger to read as I do. This list does not even attempt to exhaust the East African writers that you may know of but hey, it is a start.
1. Song of Ocol ; a poem that expresses Ocol’s, (an African man) disgust for African ways and the destructive force of
his self-hatred - Okot P’Bitek (Uganda)
2. Song of Lawino: a poem dealing with the tribulations of a rural African wife whose husband has taken up urban life and wishes everything to be westernised
- Okot P’Bitek (Uganda)
3.The Burdens: a play that reflects the socio-political atmosphere in Uganda post independence - Ruganda John (Uganda)
4. The River Between (1965): tells a story
about the struggle of a young leader ‘Waiyaki’ to unite the two villages of
Kameno and Makuyu through sacrifice and pain - Ngugi Wa Thiongo’o (Kenya)
5. Admiring Silence:
A man escapes from his native Zanzibar to England.
His furtive departure makes it unlikely that he will ever return, but he and
his family agree a bright future lies ahead. He meets an English woman and they
build a life together - Abdulrazak Gurnah (Tanzania)
6. Two in One;
a barren lady kidnaps three babies but the scam
falls through a few decades after because one of the children is recognized later in life - Mwangi Gicheru (Kenya)
7. The promised Land: A young farmer
and his wife who have migrated to Tanzania from Kenya become embroiled in
issues of personal jealousy and materialism, and a melodramatic tale of tribal
hatreds ensues. - Grace Ogot (Kenya)
8. The Floods - Ruganda John (Uganda)

traditional African patterns by European colonialism - Abdulrazak Gurnah (Tanzania)
10. I will Marry When I want (1977) : A peasant
farmer and his wife are tricked into mortgaging their home and plot of land
to finance a ‘’proper Christian Wedding.’’ This was a very powerful play of that time which according to some historians, attributed to Ngugi’s detention without trial. - Ngugi Wa Thiongo’o (Kenya)
11. The Ethnic Trap/Le Piege ethnique (1999): A study of
ethnic polemics - Benjamin Sehene (Rwanda)
12. Across The Bridge (1979): When Kihuthu’s

she disgraces her family, who feel especially humiliated by Chuma’s lowly
status as a mere houseboy. - Mwangi Gicheru (Kenya)
13. Weep Not Child; Portrays the Mau Mau uprising and bewildering dispossession of ancestral land from the Natives. This book was the first novel to be published by an East African in 1964. He wrote this book when he was still a student at Makerere University -Ngugi Wa Thiongo’o
14. La Fue Sous La Soutane/Fire Under the Cassock (2005): a historical

Can you IchiRukis/RUGOS just please SHUT UP!!!??? I am really irritated by the stupid posts complaining complaining complaining about Bleach’s ending and especially how terrible Orihime’s character is in making choices. Especially that mizu.lily which according to her, she’s still young and inexperienced (inexperienced, my foot!)
Have you all ever looked at yourselves in the mirror and tell yourselves that your lives are already in pieces of shits and that YOU ALL HAVE NO RIGHT TO CRITICIZE KUBO TITE for creating a terrible Bleach ending masterpiece. Time to come to a fricking reality THAT YOU GUYS CAN BE WRONG; I wanted to say ‘You guys can be stupid’, but hey let you guys yourselves realize it without me saying it.
Comparing Kubo Tite to Naruto’s Masashi Kishimoto ?? No you pieces of shit. Kubo Tite never admitted that he didn’t know how to write romance, you pieces of shit. It was reflected by the so called ROMANTIC POEMS THAT YOU GUYS STILL CLINGED ON AND STILL GLORIFIED AS ICHIRUKIS. Why don’t you relinquished those IchiRuki titles away, since Kubo Tite already announced who really loves who?? Kubo Tite never admitted that he was at any moment indecisive who is going to be with who, he already know which pairings would it be. That AUTHOR ALREADY SAID HE DREW ABARAI RENJI AFTER KUCHIKI RUKIA AND NOT KUCHIKI BYAKUYA AFTER KUCHIKI RUKIA. AND HE SAID THAT ONLY AFTER HE REALIZED THAT RUKIA WAS NOT A PROPER PROTOGONIST, HE THEN CREATED KUROSAKI ICHIGO!!!
to put it simply…..while Kubo Tite was toying with Rukia’s character ….Renji’s character was created to pair up with Rukia, and not Ichigo’s. Ichigo’s character was then paired up with Orihime. You could see by the designs of all Ichigo’s other friends, Kubo Tite decided Orihime would be the one interacting with him in the pilot.
Time to admit you all guys are wrong in betting the wrong horse. I mean, how wouldn’t you all not be wrong? This is the faction who only emphasizes in manga panels and cover pictures and comparing to other mangas and other manga authors……Remember? One even went to the extreme of drawing ‘VISION LINES’ and ‘How many MILIMETRES DILATED YOUR EYEBALLS ARE WHEN SEEING YOUR LOVER’ and my favourite…..ROMANTIC SHOUJO BUBBLES SCREEN. And now…..oh, look, how SAD KUCHIKI RUKIA’S FACE IS IN HER WEDDING CLOTHES.
You all think it’s so cool to still criticize Kubo Tite now despite the fact that he admitted how hard it was to continue Bleach with all the sick body and with fans coming hounding him in twitter? What’s wrong with Orihime working in a bakery shop after graduating despite being the smartest girl in the school? Her aunty gave her the money to study. Orihime shouldn’t be demanding her aunty to finance her to study the top course WHICH OF COURSE IS VERY EXPENSIVE. Have you ever thought that maybe she rather stand on her own, live on her own without depending on others? Isn’t that A VIRTUE EVERYBODY SHOULD BE ADMIRING? THAT SHE’S NOT DEPENDING ON OTHER THINGS LIKE HER BODY BUT DEPENDS ON HARD WORK TO SURVIVE??
You guys have no right to come on Orihime hard. Remember, Orihime didn’t confess to Ichigo. Ichigo was the one who initiated the relationship, Renji gave him the balls to go for it. Orihime almost kissed Ichigo but she didn’t, no?
I had an earlier conversation with one IchiRuki fan who had the opinion based on the Asian movies that parents would never call a girl his daughter unless they want her to be the wife of their son, and the conversation was screen-shot-ed by another ‘busybody’ IchiRuki fan who can’t keep her eyes and hands off me, despite her claims(that I’m a liar and I talk shit). I’m kinda glad she did, I wanted to expound what I said to the first IchiRuki fan that it’s not something I need to bother myself with, had I been a IchiHime fan. The animation kinda made it clear; there’s nothing to gloat at if a father like Isshin consider a girl as his daughter.
The animation (it’s a bit more storyline based).
Nozomi, a mod soul girl gets to stay in Ichigo’s home after Ichigo told his family a poor 'pathetic homeless’ story.
But in regards to Inoue Orihime…..
See the difference?? Rukia and Nozomi get into the family because of their poor pathetic story used to get them a place to stay for the night. Not because they were seen 'dating’ or be seen 'mushing mushing with the boy’. Unlike Orihime; Yuzu and Karin ask Orihime if she can cook for the family again. From most of the Asian stories that I watch, the 'daughter-in-law’ gets to be in the kitchen to cook meals for her husband family, she gets to take care of their family meals. And when Isshin cuts in and says that he will be fathers to them all of them, Ichigo straight attacks him with Orihime’s choconomiyaki, saying that he is a dirty(hentai) old man. Why? Why didn’t Ichigo attack Isshin earlier when Isshin equated having daughters like having harems and only now when Isshin happily includes Orihime as one of his daughters also? Is there a possibility that Ichigo doesn’t like the idea Orihime being part of Isshin’s harem since she is adopted into Isshin’s family of daughters?
What Rangiku said:
Ichigo is still a kid who can't stand up on his own, so right now that kid needs both you and Rukia. What's so bad about being jealous? That's a difficult thing to accept, let alone stop! Did you know? It would be so much easier to just run around and lash out at the enemy. But you're trying to fight it without running away. You're pretty cool Orihime.
What most Bleach Fans Heard:
You and Rukia are equally important to Ichigo, Orihime. But it's ok to feel jealous because it's a normal human reaction! But instead of being angry at Rukia, like anybody else would, you're trying to deal with your feelings by yourself, without hurting anybody in the crossfire. And that is why you are a sweet, precious little cinnamon roll who must be protected!
What Rukigos heard:
Bitch, do you honestly think that Ichigo will ever care about you? Don't try to steal Queen Rukia's bae, you filthy ho! Do you honestly think yo fanservice ass can ever compete with the Goddess? Get real, honey! Now forget this deluded fantasy that Ichigo would ever care about you and come out as a lesbian already so that Ichiruki can stand strong!
I have a question to all those IchiRukis fans who think Bleach ending is horrible, since t had not ended with IchiRuki…..
Please tell me, if Kuchiki Rukia were elected as Gotei 13 Shinigami Captain Division 13th, CAN SHE STILL PLAY HOUSEWIFE HOUSEWIFE TO Kurosaki IchigoALL THE TIME ON PHYSICAL EARTH?
Have some respect to the girl character that you all claimed is your favourite girl. It’s absolutely clear here that aside liking Renji very much as a man, she is highly ambitious and hardworking, wanting to prove others, her brother and her colleague that she’s on top because of her own hard work and power and not because her brother arranged it for her. YOU WANT HER TO DROP EVERYTHING THAT SHE WORKED FOR ICHIGO’S DICK??
And don’t give me the crap about how Uryuu being a doctor is a bad Bleach ending. Uryuu already knows now that his father cut his mother because he wanted to find ways to kill Yhwach. Uryuu isn’t going to be in some other careers if he has the brains and the desires to be a doctor.
Chad is not supposed to be a boxing champion? I hate to break your fantasy bubble but he was working inside a boxing ring studio during that 17 months Ichigo had no shinigami power. Why was he working in a boxing studio?? I don’t know, was it because HE WANTED TO TRAIN TO BE STRONGER SO THAT HE CAN SUPPORT ICHIGO WHEN ICHIGO REGAINS HIS POWERS??
Yes, IchiRukis are really idiots because they use their hearts and not the brains. Maybe their brains are really in their asses.
