Cast Iron Blessing/Cleansing Bread

I shared pics of my grandma’s blessing bread last year during the Autumn Equinox and meant to publish the recipe too…just procrastinated awhile.

So.

Here it is!

It’s a super simple no-hand knead bread!

In my family Pagan tradition growing up, the term “blessing” was interchangeable with “cleansing” and that’s the purpose of this bread- it’s meant to bless/cleanse yourself before a ritual or when you think you’re hanging onto too much negative energy!
Think a deeper purification than a bath- since you’re gonna eat it!

Important magical aspects of this recipe:
-The cast iron skillet itself: iron is good for warding off negative energy and entities. You could make this bread in the oven instead, but keep in mind it’ll be a little less potent (but I understand not everyone has a cast iron skillet large/deep enough for a round of bread!)
-rosemary: a classic herb in witchcraft for purification and cleansing.
-garlic: for protection (and flavor- my grandma fucking loved garlic in pretty much everything)
-sea salt: also for purification and cleansing

The bread itself is meant to be pretty basic because my grandmother thought that would promote the cleansing ability of the three correspondences, but do feel free to slather it in butter or toast some cheese on slices if you like that!

Ingredients:
-1 package dry yeast (I used those easy quick-rise packets because I don’t make bread constantly enough to have a bunch of yeast on hand)
-2 cups warm water (test with the inside of your wrist- if it’s too hot or cold for you, it’s too hot for your yeast! Yeast is a precious baby and must be treated gently!)
-1 tsp sugar (also known as “yeast-food”!)
-½ tbsp kosher salt
-4⅓ cups flour
-¼-½ tsp garlic salt
-dried rosemary (topping)
-sea salt (topping)

Directions:
1.) In a standup mixer (or in a large bowl), combine the packet of yeast, warm water, and bit o’ sugar. Let that yeast hang out in that bath for a bit and eat that yummy sugar until it starts foaming. This is happy yeast. Happy yeast makes happy bread.
2.) In a large bowl, sift together the salt and flour. Now add it to the yeasty water little bits at a time. You can use a dough hook attachment on your mixer or just a tough spoon (wooden is my fav). Be careful to add that flour slowly!

3.) After it’s all combined, cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise for about an hour. You can slip it into a larger bowl of warm water to help it rise if your kitchen is a bit chilly!
4.) Grease the skillet and gently put that delicate dough into it, shaping it to fit (you can use two or three skillets/batches if needed). Cover and let rise for another 30-ish minutes.
5.) Spread some olive oil over the top of the dough and sprinkle with the garlic salt, dried rosemary, and some sea salt if desired (you can skip this if you’re trying to go lower sodium, there’s plenty of salt in the bread and garlic salt to get the benefits!).

6.) Bake at 400 degree oven, in the skillet, for 16-18 minutes or until the top is a golden brown color. I let mine cool in the oven as well (i.e. turn the oven off and leave the skillet in until it’s cool enough to remove without an oven mitt).
7.) Enjoy! Visualize that cleansing energy as you eat it! It’s great for pre or post rituals and offerings!

A Little Love Spell!

Its cuffing season! You all know what that means… It means there’s love in the air! For those of you experiencing a little “cuffing season” fever, I have a little spell for you. I personally am not a fan of love spells potentially manipulating another person, so here is an attraction spell instead to give you a little boost of confidence and extra shine, so let’s get right to it!

What you’ll need:

  • Two pink candles - for love and romance
  • Twine/String - a natural bond
  • Bay leaves - attract lovers and grant wishes
  • Rosemary/rosemary oil - makes you memorable
  • Vanilla oil/extract - creates an attraction
  • Epsom salts - for calming and cleansing for a fresh start

Before you begin, mix some Epsom salts, rosemary, and vanilla together in a container and set aside for a bath after you have completed the spell. I prefer to use rosemary oil for this, but be careful applying essential oils straight to the skin for long periods of time! Bath salts dilute them and make them safer.

Begin with your personal pre-ritual cleansings, meditations, or circle castings. Allow yourself to enter a pleasant state of mind, like a “happy place”. Picture the candles as you and a future partner, but imagine no certain person, only pleasant thoughts regarding a partner. Take your two candles and tie a knot around the one representing yourself and then around the other, leaving twine or string draped between the two. Dress your candle with an oil of your choice or with vanilla. Carry this oil down the twine connecting the two, and then dress your partner’s candle; light your candles. Take three bay leaves for each candle. On your candle’s three, write three “attractive” attributes you wish to have, and on your partner’s three, write three broad personality traits you would like to see in a partner. Burn the bay leaves in their according candles, and then allow the candles to burn out or burn as much as they can safely and snuff out the flame. Complete your ritual by lighting some candles, burning some incense, and taking a nice warm bath with your Epsom mixture while you absorb the qualities of your oils!

Protect My Space Pouch & Ritual

I’m going to be out of my flat for the next 10 days, taking care of a friend’s house and dogs.

For a kitchen witch, and an especially territorial one, that’s deeply spiritually unsettling, as I’m sure many of you guys know.
Firstly, it’s the fact that I’ll be away from my hearth, my space, in an alien kitchen with alien tools and all that. That’s wrong on just so many levels.
Secondly, it’s the fact that I’m leaving my own space, my own hearth, abandoned.

This was my ritual for the occasion. Full moon today was a bonus :)

Powder for the protection witch bag:

  • Rosemary
  • Sea salt
  • Thyme
  • Lavender

Equal parts of all these, ground in a mortar. Protection, cleansing, peace, and health.

Blessing ritual:

  • Green velvet pouch
  • Three white candles
  • The three gemstones from my altar
  • Rosemary leaves
  • Sea salt crystals
  • My chalkboard vinyl ritual-sheet
  • Chalk

I drew a circle on the chalkboard surface, because that’s one of my favourite symbols to work with, but I also added the shield shape, just to make it obvious to the bag what it was meant to do :)
The outer ring of rosemary and salt serves as additional protective invocation, too. There are three candles and three stones because that’s a number that’s important to me, and this is about me and my space - the ritual should reflect that.

After the blessing, I put one of the stones on the kitchen altar, one in the corridor, and one in the bathroom.

The pouch I put in the middle of my bed, over the covers.

Protection bath (powder)

You will need: salt, eggshels, 15 rowan berries, 1 rose thorn, rosemary, (strom water),

phase of moon: waxing or full moon

best day: Thursday

Gather your ingredients and grind them thoroughly. During grinding your ingredients to powder, visualize your goal. Bless it. Charche it - under waxing, or full moon light - if you want.

bath:

Bring to a boil storm water (or water with storm water/water with storm salt). When water boils add your blend and stir clockwise. Visualize your goal. Bless it - whisper or scream - whatever you want, feel that power inside you. Feel the clouds of steam. Add your “potion” in bath.

powder:

Sprinkle around object or build, which you want protect. Add around flower pot for enchant your flowers (flowers with thorns are best). Sprinkle yourself. Draw sigils. Add into candle, or sachet/mojo bag.

A spell to alleviate self hatred

I tag many things that have to do with self care on my blog as “self care is magick”. I believe this, wholeheartedly. After all, you are your most important tool. Here’s a little spell to help you with that.

Needed:

(see bottom)

  • Celery seed
  • Fennel
  • Rosemary
  • Lavender
  • Cloves
  • Vanilla
  • salt
  • Amethyst
  • Rose quartz
  • Tigers eye

Tools:

  • Sealable container
  • Wax
  • Pink candle (put a notch one      centimeter down)
  • Black birthday candle
  • A list of four things you      find beautiful
  • Sigils for self love
  1. Set up everything you normally do before working a spell. Do any grounding or cleansing you feel is needed.
  2. Pick up the black candle in each of your hands and pour everything that you feel you dislike about yourself into it. Down to the last thing.
  3. Take a deep breath and light the candle, saying:“as this candle burns away, so do all of my negative thoughts about myself. ”
  4. Release all of your negative thoughts as the candle burns away.
  5. When the candle has burned to the point of going out, shake yourself out.
  6. Pick up the pink candle and light it, saying:“I have things in myself that I can see as beautiful, such as"… say as many things as you can think of
  7. Put the sigils in the container as you say them
  8. Once the candle has burned down to the notch, begin to fill your container with the herbs, for every ingredient you  put in, state three     things that are beautiful about you, that you don’t like. (ex: if you have     freckles and don’t like them, say "my freckles are beautiful”)
  9. Add your crystals. For every crystal you put in, state three things you like about yourself for each. (ex:I just got my hair cut and it looks awesome, or, my makeup looks so good today)
  10. Seal the container with its     top.
  11. Kiss the side of it, saying:“let me know that I am lovely, for I know no one else like me. In every part of me I know there is beauty, because it is a part of me. I am beautiful because I am astounding. I am beautiful because I am amazing. I am beautiful because I am me, and only I can be myself.”
  12. Seal the container in wax and place in a place you will see it every day. (ex: hang above your bed, hang in front of a mirror, in front of a computer, etc.)
  13. every time you see it, say something you enjoy about yourself.

That’s it! At step 12, you’re done with the initial spell! Make sure you’ve cleaned up and snuffed all flames; now go relax, take a nice candle lit bath or drink some tea! Step 13 is very important, don’t feel bad about missing it a few times.

**about the herbs, if you don’t like these, feel free to mix and match what suits you!  This is just what I used! Its all behind the intent, you don’t have to use everything!**

Jar spell from @witchy-woman ’s Tumblr.

Cloves: Drives away negativity
Spearmint: Protection while sleeping

I have confidence that this is the last little kick I need to get these restless night to stop.

Thank you @witchy-woman for this spell!

Just cast a series of protection spells

So late last night there were a couple of guys walking along the outside of my back fence with torches shining. They weren’t technically doing anything wrong, but…

So I decided to cast a series of protection spells around my property. The numbers 5, 7, and 9 have traditionally been associated with protection, so I cast 5 spells, using a total of 7 herbs/spices/botanicals, and 9 knots in the string of one of the spells.

1. Black and White Protection Powder.
Grind whole black pepper and sea salt. Blend together and sprinkle around the boundaries of your home

2. Charm Bag.
Into a red charm bag put salt, rosemary, and ashes from the hearth. Before binding, tie nine knots into a length of twine. Use this to bind the charm bag, tying nine knots to tie it tight. Hide this charm bag near the entrance to your home.

3. Sigils.
Carved five protective sigils into a fragrant wax cube, then melted in an oil burner.

4. Threshold Protection.
Grind up chamomile, St John’s Wort, and fennel seeds into a rough powder. Pour this in a line across the threshold under the doormat.

5. Compass Sentinels.
Cut a cinnamon stick into four equal lengths, and cast these strongly at the four points of the compass around your property.

Now I’m feeling quite drained, but I can definitely feel a strong aura of protection all around the house and yard, like an invisible dome. Each spell is doing it’s job, but more than that they are interacting and interweaving with each other, binding together in a deeper spell.

Disclaimer: as always, magical methods should always be done to enhance mundane methods. We’ve got dogs, house alarms, and well lit yards.

Edible Spell and Witch Bottle for Protection and Nurturing

Remember the potato casserole I told you about? Well, here’s a fun way to turn it into an edible spell, with a bonus spell bottle. And a trick to make the dish tastier. What more can you ask for? I mean, seriously.

You take a clean bottle, or a jar, and in it, you combine:

  • milk
  • sea salt - a teaspoon is enough
  • garlic - a small clove, preferably pressed, but it can be chopped too
  • rosemary - a pinch, or two if dried

Sea salt, rosemary and garlic are all used for protection, rosemary and garlic are also used for health, and there is nothing that can invoke nurturing and growth better than milk.

Then you shut your receptacle tight, give it a little shake, and let it sit in the fridge (no longer than 48 hours though!). For that time, it acts as your protective spell bottle, working from the inside to ward off evil or unhealthy influences.
And then you take it out and use the spice-imbued milk to make gratin dauphinois, which is your edible protection and nurturing spell. Eat it yourself, or share with those you think need some of that.

Home blessing jar I made. Layered with white rice (for abundance), Rosemary (banish negativity), sea salt (purity), rose petals (love), lavender (peace) topped with an amethyst, rose quartz, and a bloodstone.

“North, South, East, and West:
Keep this home inspired and blessed.
For clarity, salt from the sea,
Abundant rice for prosperity.
Keep all energy fresh and clear
And we shall grow and prosper here!”

I stole this idea from someone else (probably from Pinterest somewhere)

Tiny Protection and Luck Bag

This is my first time posting some of the magic I do. I just did this earlier today.

This is a bag meant to be hung somewhere to bring luck and protection while in the room.

Materials:

  • a bag that you made that’s no bigger than the size of your hand
  • needle and thread
  • a little bit of cinnamon (for protection)
  • some rosemary (for luck and protection)
  • a little bit of salt (for protection)
  • [optional] catnip (for luck and protection)
  • two small pieces of paper and something to write with
  • yarn or something else you can attach to make the bag hang

Steps:

1. Put the rosemary, (catnip), cinnamon, and salt into the bag you made.

2. Write the words “luck” and “protection” on small, separate pieces of paper. Put them in the bag, too.

3. Sew the top of the bag shut. Make sure it’s tight so nothing gets out! Or you can do what I did: I sewed the materials from step one inside of a little square that was thicker than my bag and put that in.

4. Attach the yarn or whatever it is you have to use as the hanging piece.

5. You’re done! That’s it! You can hang this bag in your bedroom, kitchen, car, etc.

Witchcraft stickers for the witchy/Wiccan lifestyle! Here we have a black cat, salt with rosemary and sage, black candles, the three goddess moon, quartz cluster, a pentagram moon, and a cauldron!
These can go on most surfaces. Your phone, a glass bottle/jar, a mirror, tablet, 3DS, Book of Shadows, a Grimoire, or book covers.
Super fun, cute, and just the right type of aesthetic.
All of these have a protective laminate, but I would encourage to keep away from water spirits!
Blessed be!

Abitwitchy’s Bath Bag

Materials:

-1 coffee filter

- string or a rubber band

- basil

-rosemary

-cloves

-sage

-sea salts or bath salts

Instructions:

1. Flatten out coffee filter

2. Put herbs and salts in the center of the coffee filter. For salts, I used pink Himalayan sea salt, but as it said in the materials list, I sometimes use actual bath salts. Here’s a picture because it’s a really aesthetically pleasing step.

3. Carefully pull up the edges, try to keep everything inside the filter, and make it into a little bundle around the ingredients, binding it at the top with the string or rubber band. String looks prettier, but it’s easier to bind it with a rubber band and there’s less of a chance of stuff slipping out while it’s in the bath.

Here’s a picture of the final product.

Now just stick this baby in the bath and relax! It’s kind of like a tea bag for a bath. It helps bring luck, strength, and beauty, as well as cleanses/purifies and drives away negative energy. Hope you enjoy!
