Battle of Hogwarts Breakdown Part 3: “Somewhere beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see?”
Continuing the break down analysis of the text regarding how many students from each house actually stayed to fight in the battle of Hogwarts. Here is the text again:
“the Slytherin table was completely deserted, but a number of older Ravenclaws remained seated while their fellows filed out; even more Hufflepuffs stayed behind and half of Gryffindor remained in their seats.”
This time we will be talking about the one and only Hufflepuff House! Now, we don’t really know how many people we are talking about since it just says “even more Hufflepuffs”. I can name 2 off the top of my head who were confirmed to be there: Ernie and Hannah. Justin probably didn’t attend the final year since he was muggle-born. Susan Bones may have been there but I’m not quite sure. We also know that Zacharias Smith was seen pushing younger students out of the way to leave Hogwarts before the battle began.
Like Ravenclaw, Harry didn’t really interact with many Hufflepuffs. We have the few who were named that also appeared in the DA, but aside from them, we don’t know much about Hufflepuffs who were Harry’s age. He doesn’t even name Hannah and Ernie at the table when noting who stayed.
Of the 4 houses Gryffindor and Hufflepuff were most likely the ones preparing for a fight of this scale. Why? Aside from Gryff. being HP’s house, both McGonagall and Sprout already had it in their minds to let the students who wanted to stay fight. They would have been doing everything in their power to have prepared their students during Snape’s tenure to fight back against the Carrows and to fight in a battle like the one about to happen. Both houses also are deeply connected to honor codes (chivalry, valor, and loyalty) that would have prompted more of them to take action during the year and to stay for the final battle.
Also, you know Pomona Sprout went in there and gave a rallying talk to all the students who were of age and talked them through and helped them decide if they wanted to stay or leave. They were making battle plans before anyone else even had a chance to know staying was an option!
For a Hufflepuff, staying to fight the darkest evil of recent wizarding times is just something you do because you know you fight for what is right. Those who stayed were fighting for their friends and family and for total strangers who had been victims of the darkness Voldemort had spread. They know what that feels like and they won’t let anyone else feel like that, not if they have a say in the matter. They had this thought in mind (to quote Rose Tyler): “You don’t just give up. You don’t just let things happen. You make a stand! You say no! You have the guts to do what’s right even when everyone else just runs away.”
