rose chibambo

Rose Chibambo (1928-2016) was a politician and activist in the British Protectorate of Nyasaland, before it became the independent state of Malawi, and immediately afterwards. She was instrumental in organising the local women in the struggle for independence.

She was the first woman to hold a senior position on the Nyasaland African Congress, and after independence she was the first female minister in the newly formed cabinet. In later years she was active in charitable organisations that provided relief to orphans of HIV victims.
