Takeover Tuesday: Tegan and Sara's 1999-Inspired Pride Playlist

Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week Billboard taps chart-topping artists and tastemakers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard's Spotify account. We give the artists free rein to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.

This week, Tegan and Sara have shared a playlist of “Songs We Would Have Listened To Before Pride in 1999,” as they titled it. The Quin sisters are set to perform at this year’s New York City Pride event - Pride Island  -  that will take place June 23-26 at Manhattan’s Pier 26. Earlier this month, the duo shared on Twitter that they were marching in L.A.’s Pride Parade (which turned into the Resist March).

Sara Quin tells Billboard that because she and her sister grew up with “a diverse group of friends whose musical tastes varied greatly, we loved parking ourselves at that musical intersection and we soaked it all up.” She went on to recall: “One weekend we’d be at a rave dancing to house music. Aimless Friday nights just driving around in our friend Mitch’s car listening to hip-hop. Sometimes just alone for hours with headphones on in our bedrooms, absorbed in an Ani DiFranco album or a mix tape of Bjork and Smashing Pumpkins. We liked it all and we played it as loud as our parents would let us.”

Listen to their playlist below.
