“Imagine that the world is made out of love. Now imagine that it isn’t. Imagine a story where everything goes wrong, where everyone has their back against the wall, where everyone is in pain and acting selfishly because if they don’t, they’ll die. Imagine a story, not of good against evil, but of need against need, where everyone is at cross-purposes and everyone is to blame.”

Umineko no naku koro ni EP8 Requiem of the golden witch manga pv pages [NEW CHAP Part 2]

Upon Umineko reread, I think it’s quite clear that Genji is in love with Kinzo, as well as insecure about his status as a homosexual in 1980s Japan. Here’s why:

  • “He’s been by my Grandfather’s side more than my late Grandmother” - Episode 1. It seems to be implying something, but on its own it doesn’t hold much water. Until…
  • Referring to himself as furniture (Episode 2 and some other episodes as well). Upon first read, it seems as if he’s just referring to himself as furniture because furniture appears to mean servant (as Shannon and Kanon also do as well), but in Episode 7, it’s revealed that Yasu (Shannon and Kanon) refers to herself as “furniture” due to the fact that she is a transgender with a mutilated body and horrible birth secret, something which can never be accepted in 1980s Japan. Well, so is homosexuality.
  • Genji is willing to throw himself to Yasu’s roulette with no qualms whatsoever after Kinzo’s death. He has nothing else to live for.
  • Ronove, Genji’s fantasy-self, makes several homosexual advances on Battler, both in-game and in the Ougon Musou Kyoku routes. Seems to be for comedy/yaoi fanservice at first, but upon reread I think it goes deeper than that. Who does Battler resemble? A younger Kinzo.

With that said, it’s pretty clear that Genji always held an unreciprocated love for Kinzo, one which he carried to his grave. He lived his life for him, after all. It’s really saddening.

Ronove’s nose was stained red with spewing blood, which was dripping onto the carpet.

“By the way, that just now was my answer as a maiden. My answer as the next head is different.”

“Allow me to ask…”

“The person I love, my family and relatives, everyone, everyone! I’ll protect them. If I’m the head, then that’s my duty. Dad wasn’t just swaggering around. He protected me and Mom. He fought the pressure of succeeding the Ushiromiya family for many decades!

Being the next head is nothing trivial. So you know what? I can throw it away. Betting my own life is something I can do easily!!”
