O Romeo, Romeo...

So this is my contribution to Marichat May, now no one can tell me I never did anything for it xD I hope you enjoy :)

“Ugh, this is so stupid, Tikki,” Marinette complained, crinkling the pages of the Literature book she was holding in her hands. “There’s no way I can make this convincing.”

“Not with that attitude,” Tikki giggled. “Relax, Marinette, you’ll be a great Juliette! Don’t push yourself too hard. Besides, you’ll have the book right in front of you in class; you don’t have to memorize anything.”

“I know,” Marinette sighed dejectedly. “But I have to practice this, at least. What if Adrien plays Romeo? I want him to be captivated by my Juliette, and that can’t happen if I just read straight from the book.”

  • European musicals: Big hits in home countries, top songs charted, translated in over 234324343 languages, seen by over a bajillion spectators, performed almost everywhere in every corner of the world, have solid international fandoms including American and British fans
  • American producers: Hey this obscure niche musical about struggling artists in New York/LA would definitely make big $$ on Broadway/in theaters alongside this lackluster revival of a classic musical and this hip new musical that costs $3242343 a ticket whoop let's do it

hahaha guys the musical version of Romeo and Juliet is just so quality, honestly:

French? Hungarian? You can listen to the soundtrack in English probably, but pick a language and prepare for An Experience

French version is Romeo et Juliette, and it’s the original play/music

  • the Montagues and Capulets are color-coded. Pretty sure it’s supposed to be red and blue, but honestly, it’s more like magenta and violet. Sharkboy vs Lavagirl, omg
  • everyone’s hair is so Extra in this version
  • the d a n c i n g
  • Les Rois du Monde. Just that song/scene
  • everyone looks like MCR Killjoys era, and the general visual and musical theme is like, Mad Max if governments still existed
  • everyone! is so! gorgeous! and amazing!
  • i just love Juliette a lot in this version, okay?
  • dialogue updated to more modern language (as far as my subtitle-reading self can tell) and it works really well
  • nobody cares about Romeo’s lonely soul because everyone is too busy TEARING UP VERONA IN SYNCHRONIZED DANCE STEPS

okay, so I’m a bit biased. I think you should watch both! Definitely, you should watch the French version, because it’s amazing and original!  but actually, if you’re going to only watch one of them, you should watch the Hungarian version because:

  • Bereczki Zoltán
  • Benvolio is like 97% more Personality in this version
  • T H E DANCING
  • alas, the color-coding is not nearly as obvious, but do not fear, because the hair is cranked up to 300% to make up for it
  • idk if this was a mistranslation or if this is genuinely the closest English meaning to match the Hungarian, but somewhere in the middle of a really serious song, Romeo says something like “my buddies, my friends” and I can’t stop laughing
  • Juliet is so pretty and cute and she’s just so excited to fall in love! and meet someone who is cute and nice and wants to kiss her!
  • if you didn’t already ship R&J you’re freaking going to now they’re so cute i’m literally covering my face with my hands and squealing
  • pretty much every time Benvolio and Mercutio are sharing the stage, I cannot stop smiling
  • this Romeo is like Romeo+Hamlet. he’s all introspective and premonitions of doom, so it punches you in the feels that much harder when it turns out he’s RIGHT
  • the Montagues are a pack of young, feral, hedonistic, heathens and it’s fantastic
  • TYBALT
  • frickin’ Tybalt
  • the serious parts are actually serious, and they’ll tear you up, let me say. if you didn’t feel feelings about the deaths and the suicides before, you will while watching this musical
  • (those last 6 are true of the French version, too, I just stuck them in here because I’m biased)
  • this link really says it all tbh: http://indigo-night-wisp.tumblr.com/post/94954703234/theghostparty-to-reign-in-hell
  • Bereczki Zoltán
  • he bears repeating

Things I loved about Beauty and the Beast (spoilers obvs)

I have to say that, being a huge fan of the original , I was very sceptical about this live action version. But it completely won me over. I’ve seen it twice (once in IMAX which I definitely recommend) and I’ve been listening to the soundtrack on repeat for 3 days. The movie was an absolute delight and I wanted to highlight my favourite bits :)

  • The fact that the Prince is an adult (and no mention of how long ago he was cursed)
  • The memory charm!
  • The group scenes with real crowds (I get really annoyed when movies have street scenes etc. with only 4 people in them)
  • Diverse Cast!
  • The priest giving her the books (makes much more sense than having a bookstore in that village)
  • “Ugh!”
  • Belle the tinkerer/inventor
  • Belle teaching the little girl how to read
  • Belle slipping out of that dress
  • Cadenza playing a bit of Be Our Guest when Maurice arrives in the castle (reminded me that the song was originally going to be for him)
  • Maurice stealing a rose
  • The entire Gaston song, but specifically:
  • LeFou paying the people to participate and sing along (Gaston is not blindly adored by all the townspeople)
  • The clapping/instrumental bridge
  • ‘And his name’s G-A-S-T’ which was in the soundtrack for the original but cut for the movie so I was super happy to see it was included
  • The castle crumbling and the servants going through changes every time a petal falls (I remember that last bit was in the Broadway musical too)
  • Mrs Potts being understanding of Belle’s escaping
  • Belle not eating a thing during Be Our Guest ^^
  • The Beast reacting to Romeo and Juliette and also the King Arthur bit
  • Belle’s reaction to the library
  • The magical book literally lets her travel as a reference to her ‘travelling’ with the books she used to read at home (I only realised this two days after I saw the film…)
  • The Beast in make-up
  • Why is she running away in her yellow dress surely it’s not very practical oh wait it’s so he can see her in the distance as he sings Evermore (my heart!)
  • Speaking of, Evermore was so dramatic™ I loved it
  • Stanley’s reaction to being wardrobed
  • The servants changing back (and the heart attack I almost had with Chip)
  • The way the castle changed as the rising sun hit the different sections (I miss the glitter magic but this worked nicely)
  • The beard line (again, almost made it in the original so a nice touch to have it here)
  • The village being called Villeneuve (reference to Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve who wrote the original fairy-tale!)
  • The entire aesthetic really
  • Celine Dion and Josh Groban <3
  • Alan Menken’s score, oh boy had I missed his music!

Basically being such a big fan of the original only made me love it more. It feels like they added certain things specifically for Disney nerds. And it also feels like they had fun making it? I really was not expecting to love it was much as I did. I wasn’t expecting to like it at all really, so it was a nice surprise 🥀
