One Piece vs googly eyes: part 1/??

It’s a small project to celebrate 20th anniversary. Thank you Oda for your hard work! I know that it’s a little late 😅

Here we see one of the first examples of reputation vs reality in One Piece. The first mentions of Zoro paint him as a bloodthirsty monster, yet when he actually appears, it’s quickly proven that this isn’t the case. He was imprisoned for protecting a little girl he didn’t even know. Then, when she comes by to bring him some food, an action that could get her in trouble with the law, he first tries to scare her away. When that doesn’t work and she’s thrown out of the compound at Helmeppo’s command, he eats the rice balls she brought her even though Helmeppo had stomped them into the ground, and tells Luffy to tell Rika that they were delicious. This is Zoro doing what he can to protect Rika not only from physical harm, but emotional harm, as well. It’s this series of events that ultimately makes Luffy decide that he’s going to recruit Zoro.

Backtracking a little, it’s interesting to note that when Luffy and Coby first arrived at the marine compound and peeked over the wall at Zoro, he smirked at them and asked them to free him. However, after the debacle with Helmeppo and Rika, he declined Luffy’s offer to free him, despite the fact that at that point Luffy wasn’t even saying “I’ll free you if you join my crew” - he hadn’t yet decided whether to recruit him or not. Because of this, I believe that Zoro’s menacing look and request to be freed was an attempt at scaring Luffy and Coby away, much like his threats to Rika when she offered him the rice balls.

For a moment, 4Kids’ “hammer gun” in episode 3 is unedited when on a closer view of Coby.

The “hammer gun” in episode 3 in the 4Kids dub is a completely different weapon after the scene is distant.

Double-feature today, both on the same particular episode and the same particular scene!

Contrary to implications by a still image circulating on the web, 4Kids did not “censor” Luffy smiling in episode 1 of the dub. 4Kids instead made it seem as though Luffy was talking while awakening from his nap.

It still was awkward-looking, but really, I see a lot of that screenshot commented on because it wasn’t animated plus lacked any context. Am I defending 4Kids? Not really, because it was a stupid edit regardless. It made that scene go quicker, but it can be done by just removing the angles. Whatever.

You can see the confusion, so I took a screencap of an “in-between” mouth.
