Marie Leszczynska - Queen of France
born: June 23, 1703, Breslau, Silesia
died: June 24, 1768, Versailles, FranceMarie

Leszczynska, wife of Louis XV, lived most of her married life secluded in a few small rooms at Versailles. Meanwhile, her husband had a succession of mistresses and excluded her from the life of the court.

Marie was the daughter of Stanislas Leszczynski, who was placed on the thrown of Poland in 1704 when King Charles XII of Sweden gained this territory in a military campaign. Stanislas was driven from power in 1709 when Swedish forces left the area, leaving him without military support. Stanislas, a king without a country, then wandered from one place of refuge to another, including Turkey and Sweden. In 1725, he was living on the on the charity of the French court in Weissembourg, a little village in Alsace.

Marie Leszczynska was chosen to be the wife of Louis XV over 99 marriageable princesses. The decision in favor of the Polish princess was, in reality, an attempt on the part of the Duc de Bourbon and his mistress, Madame de Prie, to secure power for themselves. They selected Marie due to her extreme poverty believing she would gratefully assist them in controlling the king, as she owed her elevation to their favor alone.

Marie Leszczynska was 23 and Louis age 16 at the time they were married. Marie was a very quiet, gentle, and extremely religious person who fulfilled her obligation by having ten children, and provided an heir to the throne. During the first nine years of marriage, Louis was the paragon of husbands, due to his religious upbringing and the ordinary bashfulness of youth.

In 1733, at age 25, the king took his first mistress. This relationship was kept secret for four years. In 1737, the Queen had her tenth and last child. From that time onward, Louis treated his wife with frigid courtesy, never speaking to her except when others were present. He paid her short visits every day as a matter of etiquette. Otherwise, they led separate lives.

The Queen held her own court in her chambers, receiving guests and carrying out ceremonial functions. When Voltaire and Emilie du Chatelet were at Versailles, Emilie attended the Queen’s court and had the high privilege to sit in the presence of the Queen.

Marie Leszczynska was deeply religious, and heard mass in the morning and again at one o'clock with all the court. Louis XV preferred the company of his mistresses and Marie was not included in the daily activities of the king’s court.

In great contrast to Louis, who was bored by everything, the Queen was fond of music, she painted a little, embroidered, and played the guitar and harpsichord. In the evening she dined with a small group of friends who enjoyed conversation and they often played cards. The Queen did not become involved in court intrigues and lived a quiet, peaceful existence. She died in 1768 at the age of 65.

French Game of Thrones vocab list

by lucillestudies

I made this list just because I thought it would be fun, I love Game of Thrones, and I have started reading the book (I am halfway through the 2nd one). I wanted to give a big round of applause to the translator(s) who did an amazing job on the French version, especially in translating the name of the different places (honestly, the meaning is the same but they succeed in using some old words which just make the whole thing even more realistic).

Jeu de Trônes (direct translation) - Game of Thrones (Actual title: Le Trône de Fer)

Places

Hautjardin - Highgarden (direct translation)

Port-Réal - King’s Landing (”réal” is an adjective which means “royal” and “port” means… well, harbour.)

Lancehélion - Sunspear (”lance” is spear, and “hélion” comes from the greek “helios” which means sun, but it’s not actually a word in French. Sunspear indeed, but not directly, just etymologically)

Accalmie - Storm’s End (accalmie is indeed the word that describes the moment when a storm starts decreasing. I find this one particularly clever and poetic)

Peyredragon - Dragonstone (in occitan (a language from the south of France, “peyre” means stone)

Le Nord - The North (direct translation)

Vivesaigues - Riverrun (this one is tricky, “aigues” is an old word for “waters” and “vives” would roughly translate to “alive” or “lively”. This one is really cool because it does sound ancient and authentic)

Châteaunoir - Castle Black (direct translation)

Le Donjon Rouge - The Red Tower (donjon is actually a word for tower but more specifically the central tower of a castle where the lord and his family live)

Au-delà du Mur - Beyond the Wall (direct translation)

Les Cités Libres - The Free Cities (direct translation)

Les Îles de Fer - The Iron Islands (direct translation)

Daenerys du Typhon de la Maison Targaryen, Première du Nom, Reine de Meereen, Reine des Andals, de Rhoynar et des premiers hommes, Suzeraine des Sept Couronnes et Protecteur du Royaume, Khaleesi de la grande mer herbeuse, Mère des Dragons, L'ImbrûléeDaenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Mother of Dragons, The Unburnt (sorry i am not translating title by title, but they are in the same order so you’ll be able to find the corresponding title easily)

anonymous asked:

I want more, je suis exigeante).

Royai Week Day 7: NO Choices

Roy doesn’t get to choose. Only Riza has the final say in all things mustache B)

Happy Royai Day!!! And here’s something crack-ish for the last day of Royai week!!! It’s sad to see it end, though I do have loooots of catching up to do. I’m also sad I didn’t get to do all the days (life has horrible timing), but I am happy that I managed to do something for the opening and closing days :3

Many props to the admins @lieutenantriza and @rizascupcakes for hosting this!! The fandom has so much new and awesome Royai content now <333

Georgina: Hey! How was lunch at your mother’s?
Joël: Don’t ask.
His expression is one of defeat. Disconcerted, she tries to smile at Jared, who is wearing his habitual worried expression. She just wants to envelop them both in her arms .
Jared: Where’s Angus?
Georgina: He and Dad went for a ride on the quad bikes somewhere.
Joël: What about Roy?
Georgina: Who cares.
That makes Joël smile. The ticklish, fizzy feeling rises in her chest again. You could probably fry eggs on the tops of her ears. Douglas coughs. Loudly.
Douglas: Say, Jared. Have you been up to the dinosaur dig yet? We ought to go now, before it gets dark. We’ll take Dad’s pickup truck. The dogs can come too. They can go digging for dinosaur bones!
Jared’s jaw drops open in awe. As soon as they are out of sight Georgina links her arm in Joël’s. Anyone watching them from the house would think they were two old friends just going for a stroll. They walk down the slope behind the guesthouse towards the river. She wants to ask him about his mother. How literal was he being when he said don’t ask? She squeezes his arm instead. She doesn’t know where they’re going. It’s not often in her life she’s been able to say that.
Joël: Remember that conversation we had early in the week? When you asked me how it felt to be home?
Georgina: Yes. Of course I do.
She squeezes his arm again.
Joël: Well, I don’t feel like Appaloosa is my home anymore. I haven’t for a long time, if I’m honest with myself.
Georgina drops his arm. Roy is walking slowly towards them, leading Ricochet Prince of Rhythm, or Ric for short, by the reins. Roy looks to be in pain and when they get closer they can see he is limping.
Joël: Dude? What’s up with your leg?
Roy: I want to go home. Back to Bridgeport. Fuck this shit. Even my favourite horse hates me.

S01.E01 - To Find A Princess

Written by Madellaine Paxson and storyboarded by Yann Legall, cover by Galou.

This episode is the first one of the series, where we find out who Iris is- and why her destiny is so important. Indeed, as the audience, a lot of member of the team were frustered by shows that never tell “how it began”, so it was very important for us that LoliRock had a beginning (and an end too, but we’ll get to that later).

To Find a Princess” tells us how Iris, Talia and Auriana first met and created the LoliRock band. It also introduces their secret mission as magical princesses to gather the Oracle Gems (”Saphirs d’Ephedia” in french) in order to restore Ephedia’s Crown, and then beat the evil wizard Gramorr and his minions.

Introducing all these characters and plot point wasn’t easy. It never is. In just a few lines, you have to grasp their personalities, such as Talia’s seriousness regarding their mission (and lack of humour), or Auriana’s relaxed and easy-going side. The audition scene has this purpose, and is later completed by the scene in the cave.

Mephisto and Praxina’s first appearance was even more important for a lot of people in the team, because they’re the ones fighting the princesses every episodes. Not Gramorr directly. And as the saying goes “A hero is only as good as the villain he fights”. Therefore, we wanted to introduce the twins with their evil, and dangerous side first. We wanted the audience to take them (and Gramorr) seriously, especially as they’re fighting a powerless and untrained Iris. Their use as comic reliefs would be shown afterward, in the second fight near the house. (We’ll talk more about Mephisto and Praxina in further posts, don’t worry about it.)

Finaly, the key point was “how to introduce the events of Ephedia ?”. Gramorr taking the throne, the Queen and King disparition, Iris being sent on earth, and the Oracle Gem scattered ?… We didn’t want to use a classic flashback for that, but rather tried to immerse Iris (and the audience) directly in the elements of the past.

Using mythological illustrations (projected by Auriana directly on the walls of the cave) was the solution we agreed on. We put extra efforts in giving them a special treatment, different from the rest of the show, as we needed to give a feeling of magic and wonder but also of mystery, especially toward the Queen, King, and Gramorr himself.

Work in progress material of this episode coming in the following posts. ;) Stay tuned !

Léon
A Bout de Souffle
Jeune et Jolie
La Piscine
Le Mépris
L’As des As
Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain
A la Folie, Pas du Tout
La Grande Vadrouille
Le Chant de la Mer
Madame Bovary
La Reine Margot
Orphée
Le Roi et L’Oiseau
L’Etudiante
Belphégor
La Belle Personne

I hope this helps! Good luck with French, too; god knows our grammar is a pain.
