Directed by post-HUAC Joseph Losey, who’d recently moved to the UK from Hollywood, the film is a scathing indictment of the studio system which rejected Losey for his political leanings. Losey would go on to make two of the greatest British films, ever,  The Servant (1963) and The Go-Betweens (1971).
