Scarlet Macaw (Ara Macao) by Adam Riley by Rockjumper Birding Tours
Via Flickr:
Photo of the day – The splendid Scarlet Macaw, which Adam photographed in Honduras. Found in humid evergreen forest in tropical South America, it was once a far more widespread species, but a combination of deforestation and capture for the cage bird trade has seen its range and numbers plummet to far less than was previously the case. On a more positive note, however, stringent enforcement of anti-capture laws as well as burgeoning breeding and release programs, in Honduras and Costa Rica for example, have seen them return to areas where they had become locally extinct. Which just goes to show that the tide can be turned, provided we are willing to make a collective effort. For more info, please visit: www.rockjumperbirding.com/

Egyptian Goose (Alopochen Aegyptiaca) by Jonathan Rossouw by Rockjumper Birding Tours
Via Flickr:
Photo of the day – Today’s pic might be of a very common species, but what an attractive and charismatic bird! Known as the Egyptian Goose since it was once considered sacred by the Ancient Egyptians, who were the first people to domesticate the species as well as incorporate it into their interesting artwork. Found in Africa south of the Sahara and also in the Nile Valley, small feral populations from escaped birds have even become established in Western Europe. Jonathan Rossouw photographed this pair in Uganda.
