I sat, curled up in the wooden cage where I was placed. Every once in a while a young boy would bring a small piece of bread and a cup of water. I would thank him. I didn’t know where I was or what I was doing here. All I remember is walking home from the bake store. My family had asked me to run out and grab some fresh bread for next week’s big dinner we would be having, and then being knocked out and waking up in this cage. I barley fit, it was a cage made by children for children. I scooted back as a taller boy kneeled down and looked into the cage. He had a scar run from the right of his eye down to the left of his chin. He grinned and it was sickly. “Aren’t you lovely…” he spoke, and I shivered. His voice was even more sickly. Not in the sense of being ill, but the kind of sick where they know it and use it against people.

“Felix!” A stern voice shouted from somewhere. I couldn’t tell because there was nothing but trees where the cage was. “Until next, love” he said and stood up, walking away. I shook from the sob I let out once I couldn’t see him anymore. I continued to cry until I had no more tears to cry. I was shaking harder now, only now it was from the cold.

“Cold?” I flinched when I heard the voice. It was calm, but something about it was off. I shook my head. I couldn’t bring myself to speak. My mind either didn’t want to form words or couldn’t form the words. “Come on now love, I know your cold. I can see your shivering.” he said, he opening the cage doors. I backed up until the wood from the cage was breaking skin and causing blood. “I’m not going to hurt you” he said as he put the blanket near my feet. The boy then again shut the cage door and stood there watching me for a while.

I didn’t want to look away for fear that he would do something to me. He grinned and it was a wicked grin. I swallowed hard, “You hungry?” he asked with an eyebrow raised. I nodded, I was hungry. He had brought food and some water, and he watched me eat and drink. My own eyes never leaving his. I tried not to eat like a complete pig, but once the taste got to my stomach it was growling for more and I oblige.

The two boys looked over at the caged girl who sat wrapped in a dirty woven blanket that didn’t do much, but was better than nothing. They looked over each other with small smirks. Both enjoyed a good game, and to them… That’s all this was.

Game of Chess(P.14)

Title: Game of Chess(P.14)
Pairing: Reader x many pairings(But seriously, many, like…the reader is so bad xD)(Dylan O’Brien mainly in the end)
Warnings: Smut, Age difference, Boss-employee relationship, cussing, murder, drug mentions, dark themes.
Summary: O’Brien’s is a large banking company that is overtaking the credit card industries. Their rival Pan Banking has been hitting the company hard with different tactics, taking their employees, lowering their costs to consume more customers. Y/N gets a job as Mr. O’Brien’s new assistant and he’s quite impressed with her, but there is a lot more to her past and Pan banking then Dylan had expected. But even in the twists and turns of this dangerous game, he might not care about the past she has.

“You need to tell them about Robbie.” Dylan said sternly now that we were sitting in a quiet room at the police station. I was still visibly shaken and I hadn’t said much to Dylan since we got in the car, but I knew he was only trying to help. He wasn’t directly showing it, but the fact that Thomas might not make it…I knew on the inside he must be an absolute wreck.

“Dylan, you don’t underst-”

“Understand, what exactly, Y/N?” His voice was a bit harsher this time, making me avoid looking him in the eye. “That you were involved with him romantically when you came into my business? That you’re plan was to tear it all apart? That all the illegal activity that Thomas was talking about after the meeting, you were involved in? I know all of that. I don’t care!”

I flinched lightly as his tone continued to raise. I kept trying to ignore the fact over the last few weeks that he must have known all of this, but he kept it to himself in order to keep me safe. And in doing so, his business was a crime scene and his best friend was in critical condition.

“If you go down with him when you come clean it won’t be nearly as bad as it will be if you get caught trying to hide it, Y/N.” Suddenly, he softened his tone, reaching across the table to grasp my hand. “I don’t want to see you in any trouble, Y/N…But we can’t be quiet about this. He tried to kill Thomas. He might have succeeded.”

He sighed when I remained silent. “If you don’t tell them…I’ll have no choice.”

My eyes lifted and I caught his gaze finally. He frowned, his eyes were glittered with tears and his body was shaking. He was torn up about the entire situation. And it was entirely my fault.

“Okay.” I finally said, shutting my eyes with a single nod. “I’ll tell them.”

Dylan reached across the table fully, pulling me across it and into his arms. He encircled them around me tightly, kissing the top of my head. “You won’t be brought down for this, Y/N. You were trying to keep yourself alive. They’ll have to understand that.”

I could feel the tears welling in my eyes, but I shut them tightly, clutching onto Dylan as he tried to comfort me. After a moment, the sound of the door opening pulled us apart and I sat back down and lifted my eyes as an investigator walked through the doors.

“Ms. Y/L/N? I’m Officer Fjordbak. I’m here to ask you a few questions.” His eyes tore into mine instantly and gave me an uneasy feeling. A sinking feeling of distrust settled into my stomach and I sunk further into my seat. His eyes pulled away from me, settling on Dylan, they narrowed as he looked him over. Dylan visibly bristled, glancing at me as if trying to see if I recognized the officer.

I didn’t know who he was, but I suddenly wasn’t sure I trusted him. I kept my mouth shut as he sat at the end of the table in the room. “Not sure you want to talk to me?” He gave me a sweet smile, ignoring Dylan entirely.

My eyes flicked up to his for a moment before settling back onto my hands as I folded them in front of me. “You’ll have to speak at some point, I understand that this must have been a rather traumatic experience for you, but we need answers in order to make sure that we catch the person responsible behind the shooting.”

I nodded, gaining another smile from him. His consistent smiles and uplifting attitude at a time like this only haunted me further. “Do you have any idea who might have wanted to hurt Mr. Sangster?”

I nodded again, slowly. My eyes lifting to meet Dylan’s, who only gave me an encouraging look. “Yes. I have an idea.”

When I looked up, I caught the warning look on the officers face and I instantly bit my lip. “I just…I don’t have any proof.” I threw in, instantly on the front that I didn’t want to share any information with this particular cop.

Dylan shot me a look and I lifted my eyes, hoping he’d see that I didn’t trust this man. “Well…who do you seem to think is the cause?”

In the blink of an eye, Dylan stood up, coming around to place a hand on my shoulder. “I don’t think this is very fair. She just watched a good friend of hers get shot and held him in her arms until help arrived. She’s not in any mindset to be giving any answers or accusations.” He squeezed my shoulder. “Let her have the night at least to recover herself and her thoughts before throwing her into a room and antagonizing her with questions.”

The cop gave a small smirk, glancing down at his papers. “Right and you are…her fiance.” I felt my heart sink when the look of disbelief came across the man’s face. “Dylan O’Brien, correct? Are you not the owner of the company that both Ms. Y/L/N and Mr. Sangster work at?”

“Yes, I am.”

Fjordbak looked at his file again. “Ms. Y/L/N, you were just recently hired onto O’Brien’s company…”

I swallowed, nodding quietly.

“And you’re now engaged to your boss?” His eyes locked with mine. “He’s quite a bit older then you, is he not?”

Dylan growled, helping me stand up. “That’s enough. She’s going home, our personal life and age difference is not of your concern.”

“Officer Fjordbak.” The doors opened to another cop who walked in slowly, looking from myself and Dylan to the other officer. “I think that Mr. O’Brien has every right to keep those details to himself. Ms. Y/L/N does deserve a night to collect herself and to try and get some sleep.”

Dylan gave a triumphant look towards Fjordbak, whose jaw tightened in anger before he shot a smile. “Of course, Officer Sharman.”

He stood up, coming face to face with Dylan, they kept each others gaze locked until finally, Fjordbak broke away and walked towards the entrance. Sharman stepped to the side to let him leave and then turned his eyes back to the two of us. “I apologize if he asked any questions that were unreasonable. However, we will need to see you back tomorrow, Ms. Y/L/N. There are many things we need to ask and go over about the nights events.”

I nodded and looked up at Sharman, smiling softly. I could trust him. I wanted to tell him everything, but I knew that Fjordbak wasn’t far away. Something about his looks and the way he seemed to know almost to much about me and Dylan confirmed my previous suspicions that Robbie had a few officers in the City on his payroll.

“I’d prefer to keep him off of the case if this is how he acts after something so devastating.” Dylan replied, stepping in front of me. “If we return tomorrow it will be with my lawyer and I’d prefer the questions be asked by you or another more competent and understanding officer.”

The tone in Dylan’s voice told me that he had the same suspicions, not only that, but he seemed to be challenging Fjordbak, as if he knew the man was listening to them at that very moment.

Officer Sharman nodded softly. “I will do my best to assure that I am in charge of the case, however, Officer Fjordbak has already been assigned to this as well. I cannot keep him from any information that you share with me.”

Dylan nodded, his jaw clenching. “Very well.”

“Is there any news on Thomas?” I said suddenly, causing Sharman to turn his gaze to me for what seemed like the first time since he had come in here.

His blue eyes softened at my shaken and bloody state and he frowned a bit. “I apologize. We have not heard anything recently. He’s still in a very critical condition. The only visitor he’s allowed to have currently is his Fiance, Phoenix, I believe.”

I nodded. “Will you let me know…if anything changes? Please.”

He glanced at the file in his hand. “I believe we have your contact information. I will personally give you a call if I hear anything at all.”

Dylan slid his hand down my shoulder, taking my hand in his. “Thank you, officer Sharman.”

The man nodded. “Please come back in tomorrow.”

“Yes, sir.” I replied, walking past him with Dylan. He was quickly on his phone, calling his driver who pulled into the parking lot only a few moments later. As we walked out of the building, my eyes caught a slender figure leaning against the brick wall. I turned my gaze, catching the bright blue eyes off Officer Fjordbak, he locked his hues on mine and grinned, flicking his cigarette to the side before sauntering back into the police station.

“I don’t trust him.” I said, looking up at Dylan.

“I know.” He flicked his eyes to me and opened the door for me to get into the vehicle. “I don’t either.”
