Ely State Prison is a maximum security prison for men, located in White Pine county, Nevada. Ely houses inmates who are on Nevada’s death row, but executions are still conducted at the Nevada State prison in Carson city, even though that facility closed in 2012 due to budgetary issues. Over the last ten years, the prison has come under fire by the ACLU for gross mistreatment and abuse of inmates, and for allowing inmates to suffer from treatable diseases. In 2007, an investigator obtained by the ACLU alleged “the medical care provided at Ely State Prison amounts to the grossest possible medical malpractice, and the most shocking and callous disregard for human life and human suffering, that I have ever encountered in the medical profession in my thirty-five years of practice.” He went on to describe a diabetic inmate who did not receive insulin for three years, and suffered from ulceration in his legs. The inmate died of complications due to his diabetes. Other inmates suffered from untreated hepatitis, syphilis and rheumatoid arthritis. Two riots occurred in 2010 and 2011, when inmates rebelled against prison guards in protest of widespread abuse. One riot allegedly began when inmates overheard a guard tell his colleague to “break his arm if you have to” when discussing an inmate they were attempting to extract from a cell. Notable inmates at Ely include Darren Mack and Ike Ibeabuchi.
San Francisco upheld two baseball traditions Wednesday night: Winning the World Series in even-numbered years, and setting the city on fire in celebration.
Spread across the city, but overwhelmingly present in the Mission District,
Police made about 40 total arrests, including 29 for public intoxication, two for guns, four for outstanding warrants and three for aggravated assault, Sgt. Monica MacDonald told The Huffington Post.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, one man was stabbed several times and was taken to General Hospital with serious injuries.
MacDonald said vandals broke windows on five police vehicles and tagged four with graffiti. She said the department hadn’t tallied property damage and couldn’t compare it to post-game riots in 2010 and 2012.
