Ring-necked Pheasants

I realize it’s common for male and female birds of the same species often have different colors, but Ring-necked Pheasants take this to an extreme. A transplant from Asia, the males have an amazing diversity of colors. I think the understated beauty of the hens is highly underrated.

Woman Reading - Thailand

The Tibeto-Burman ethnic minority group, the Kayan People, are native to Myanmar. During the 1980′s and early 1990′s, a number of tribes fled over the border to Norther Thailand to escape civil unrest. Among the groups that fled were the Kayan Lahwi, a group famous for wearing brass coils around their necks. The coils are almost never removed, usually only to replace with new coils.

Girls start to wear the coils when they turn 5 years old. While the women are known as having “long necks”, it is actually an illusion. The weight of the brass weighs down on the womens collar bones, and compresses their rib cages. Therefore, their necks are not actually lengthened, it just appears so due to the deformation of their clavicle.

Parrot Keeping

I don’t get it.

People want to get a single parrot because if they get two then the parrot won’t like them as much.

But then they don’t want the parrot to view them as a mate.

What did you expect? You got a pet in which most species mate for life. Their lives revolve around their mate, preening their mate, feeding their mate, having sex with their mate, raising babies with their mate, driving away competitors from their mate, and yes, spending their entire life with their mate.

You prime them for this situation by you or a housemate being the only ones available, and then freak out when they want to do this to you. It’s natural. It’s not bad. Your parrot isn’t misbehaving, it isn’t a bad bird just because you are keeping a wild animal in a captive situation where it just wants to do what every feather on its body is telling it to do. Stop treating it like such, stop punishing them for displaying mating behaviors.

Do what you signed up for by getting a single bird or work to get your bird a feathered mate. That doesn’t mean buying the first bird at the pet store you see and throwing them in a cage together and wondering why they don’t like each other. That means becoming a match maker and setting up play dates, or even consider rehoming your bird to someone who can.

Stop buying parrots and expecting these wild animals to be pets. They’re not. We’re on the way to domesticating birds like budgies, cockatiels, love birds, Indian ring necks…but we’re still so far from being able to keep them happy and healthily easily like we are with chickens and pigeons who thrive with us. Hell, starlings make better pets than parrots since at least they often choose to be with us.

And please, when you’re researching any animal don’t do a quick google search. Talk to as many people as possible, both new owners and experienced owners.

I’ve been really busy, recently, with trying to avoid the future, and I forgot that there’s always another way…making the future. Our future. My great-grandfather gave this to my great-grandmother after WWII. He wanted to propose before he was shipped out, but he didn’t have the money and he bought this three years later when he was stationed in London. Fought his way across France, all the way to Berlin, with this ring around his neck with his dog tags. And when he got back she was waiting for him on the dock of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, he proposed on the spot. After my mom passed away, Joe held on to this until tonight. Iris West, will you marry me?

I’ve been really busy recently with trying to avoid the future.  And I forgot that there’s always another way.

What is that?

Making the future. Our future.  My great-grandfather gave this to my great-grandmother after World War II.  He wanted to propose before he was shipped out, but he didn’t have the money and he bought it three years later when he was stationed in London.  Fought his way across France, all the way to Berlin, and with this ring around his neck with his dog tags.  And when he got back she was waiting for him on the dock of the Brooklyn Navy Yards.  He proposed on the spot.  After my mom passed away, Joe held on to this for me, until tonight.

Barry.

Iris West, will you marry me?

vague prompt: alec and magnus' goatee, because we know he probably loves it

probably? he definitely loves it

he’s in love with it actually. the first time he met magnus he saw just a hint of it and honestly he stood there having trouble breathing and somewhere in the back of his mind he thought about what that would feel like on his face. and then when magnus grew it out and he saw it truly for the first time he just went very very still, pushing his tongue deep into his lower lip, his eyebrows raised as he stared at magnus, stared at the way the dark facial hair it looked around the edges of his mouth.

and magnus probably could tell but he didn’t say a thing because there were bigger things going on. but imagine when it came time again to kiss him, to actually kiss him again. that moment in the loft. the emotions running free there were bigger than just that but that didn’t mean he couldn’t feel it, the resistance of it against his face and the feeling of it contrasted to magnus’s lips. it stuck out in his mind. he kept pressing his fingertips to the area around his mouth for hours after, remembering the feeling of it against his face, eyelids dipping shut.

it wasn’t just how it felt, it was how it looked, the way it bracketed his mouth and the way it looked against his skin. magnus always looked powerful and he always looked handsome, but there was something more about this. there was something him about his goatee. something undeniably magnus. there was a comfortableness and an honesty about how it sat on his face, contrasting against his makeup. alec just found himself staring at it more often than not.

but it took a while for it to come up. it took a bit, it took until alec was settled in magnus’s lap, pressed close, wine glasses on the table and a soft breeze blowing through the open doors to the balcony. they’d been kissing, kissing so much that alec could feel the way his skin was reacting, licking at his swollen lips and sharing magnus’s breath all too heavy, his eyes still closed.
