rifampin

The rifampin has made my brain go crazy I feel massively confused all day the past three days and I don’t have any idea what I’m confused about. I’m also really anxious and worried but about nothing, in a different way than usual. It’s obviously killing stuff in my brain because my pupils are MASSIVE and I’m really out of it. But I’m not taking a break because I’m a badass and this is better than panic attacks and rages.

Update

So after extensive research, talking to numerous doctors and pharmacists as well, I have discovered that I’m probably (like 85% sure) NOT pregnant.

What people are referring to when they say that antibiotics reduce the effectiveness of birth control is rifampin.

Rifampin was used to cure tuberculosis (and is still used), and it CAN and DOES completely nullify the effects of birth control. It’s as if you aren’t taking any at all.

There is no scientific evidence that points to other antibiotics having an effect on the effectiveness of birth control.

There are, however, a lot of women running around claiming that their child was conceived while on antibiotics (not rifampin) and BC. They have no scientific evidence, and most probably were just not using their BC correctly. But doctors still suggest using a second form of birth control so they can cover their asses.

Medically, the second “back up” birth control is un needed. Clavamox, amoxicillin, etc. will NOT effect your birth control. Rifampin WILL.

(Though to be 100% safe, I’m taking a pregnancy test on Wednesday, one next week, and one the week after that. And all sex I’ll be having will be WITH CONDOMS. Always. Forever.)

One thing that SGU students are really good at is self expression through meme. The memes get especially creative around any examination time. I don’t know how else I would’ve procrastinated without the official ‘SGU Memes’ group on fb. Here’s a particularly hilarious one that my friend Rana made.

9 Doses in.

My antibiotics have, despite my efforts, interacted with my birth control pills I use to stop my periods (because they are crazy, make all my symptoms worse, and I had one for about eight months non stop) and now I’m spotting and having cramps.

I had my first rage in a while, that sucked as always.

I feel like shit.

I’m having brain zaps again on and off but thankfully they aren’t that bad….

Ugh.

1/19/14 IV rifampin.....

…….means business. Herxing since day 1. Now on day 3 and I can’t believe how much pain I’m in. Sore soles of my feet that it hurts to walk. Fingers hurt to close and my bones feel like they are being dipped in acid. Not to mention neck/shoulder stiffness, so nauseous 90% of the time, headaches, fatigue……the list goes on. Wish I could just sleep this away.

I know if I want to feel better i just need to throw up but then they’ll be worried but seriously it has to be this medicine I was reading the side effects and one of them is loss of appetite I’m not hungry ever and I’m tired of forcing food down my throat because it makes me feel sick like I need to puke that shit out

I have the Nexplanon implant and I just got put on antibiotics for a UTI, how long do I have to wait before I have sex without a condom? Is the implant like the pills when you have to wait until you start a new pack?

You don’t need to wait at all. And you don’t need to wait for pills either.

There is only one antibiotic proven to mess with birth control, and it only affects the pill. This antibiotic is rifampin, and it is not commonly used.

Drugs Preferred for Active TB
TB is a deadly disease and is one among the common disorders that people of India faces.

TB is a deadly disease and is one among the common disorders that people of India faces. However, it can be healed completely if the suffering individual takes the drugs religiously and keeps a keen check on precautionary measures that need to be taken. Different doctors have distinct treatment plans and medications that they prescribe to the suffering individuals, but below mentioned are the most common drugs that a people suffering from the tuberculosis must take:

  • Isoniazid
  • Rifampin
  • Pyrazinamide
  • Ethambutol

All these drugs help in fighting the different affects of the TB developed by its germs, like – Ethambutol resist the TB germs to form INH; further isoniazid helps in breaking the formation of INH in the current state.

These four drugs help in curing the different stages of the TB and also resist the cycle of TB germs to continue their structural flow. Breaking the routine of these medicines may put the suffering individual in danger as if the TB germs take it to the final stage, then these drugs may not help and person may be succumbed to death.

It is a common case that a person fighting with TB stops to take the drugs when he starts feeling comfortable and stops coughing. Relief is the sign of beginning of the healing procedure and hence, people should not misunderstand it with ‘complete cure’ of the disease. The doctors say – every second patient that dies due to TB is because he stops taking medications before completing the prescription tenure.

The dosage of the above mentioned medications depends upon the severity of the TB. It also varies with the age of the person, like – for adult, high dosage is preferred whereas; children do not require the same amount of dose. The most important factor is the number of times that these drugs need to be taken as one must not skip even a single time in entire treatment procedure. Also, see the doctor after every regular interval as it will help the doctor to understand the status of the disease and he may bring some changes in the prescription and amount of dosage, looking at the health condition of the patient.

So I had unprotected sex just over a week ago. He pulled out before he came but I still took the Plan B pill less than 24 hours after that just in case. (I'm also on birth control but I missed a few days before the sex; since then I've taken it regularly) However, I found out today that I might need to go on antibiotics because I got bit by a spider. If that messes up my birth control, and if I get my period early, will that mean I'm not pregnant? Or is my cycle just messed up?

Your antibiotics will not mess up your birth control. The only antibiotic that has been proven to affect the pill is rifampin.

Your cycle may be messed up because of taking Plan B and using your birth control irregularly, however.
