rifampin

Can antibiotics affect my birth control?

Someone asked us…

“Hi there! So I was recently prescribed amoxicillin (for post-wisdom teeth surgery) and I’ve heard that (some? all?) antibiotics can lower the effectiveness of birth control pills. Is this true? If so, how long should I be wary of these adverse effects? Thanks so much, you guys are always so helpful!”

SO many people have this question.

Fortunately, there’s only one type of antibiotic that can mess with your birth control: Rifampin (usually used to treat tuberculosis). So anyone taking Rifampin should ask their doctor and/or pharmacist if it will interact with their birth control method, and use condoms as a backup, just in case.

Amoxicillin doesn’t lower the effectiveness of birth control pills, so no worries there. There are a few other medications that can have an effect on the pill:

  • the antifungal griseofulvin (other antifungals do not make the pill less effective)
  • certain HIV medicines
  • certain anti-seizure medicines
  • St. John’s wort

If you’re taking medication and are worried it will interact with your birth control, you can always double check with your nurse or doctor and use condoms as back up until you have your answer. And remember: the pill doesn’t protect against STDs, so condoms are always a good idea.

The rifampin has made my brain go crazy I feel massively confused all day the past three days and I don’t have any idea what I’m confused about. I’m also really anxious and worried but about nothing, in a different way than usual. It’s obviously killing stuff in my brain because my pupils are MASSIVE and I’m really out of it. But I’m not taking a break because I’m a badass and this is better than panic attacks and rages.

One thing that SGU students are really good at is self expression through meme. The memes get especially creative around any examination time. I don’t know how else I would’ve procrastinated without the official ‘SGU Memes’ group on fb. Here’s a particularly hilarious one that my friend Rana made.

Update

So after extensive research, talking to numerous doctors and pharmacists as well, I have discovered that I’m probably (like 85% sure) NOT pregnant.

What people are referring to when they say that antibiotics reduce the effectiveness of birth control is rifampin.

Rifampin was used to cure tuberculosis (and is still used), and it CAN and DOES completely nullify the effects of birth control. It’s as if you aren’t taking any at all.

There is no scientific evidence that points to other antibiotics having an effect on the effectiveness of birth control.

There are, however, a lot of women running around claiming that their child was conceived while on antibiotics (not rifampin) and BC. They have no scientific evidence, and most probably were just not using their BC correctly. But doctors still suggest using a second form of birth control so they can cover their asses.

Medically, the second “back up” birth control is un needed. Clavamox, amoxicillin, etc. will NOT effect your birth control. Rifampin WILL.

(Though to be 100% safe, I’m taking a pregnancy test on Wednesday, one next week, and one the week after that. And all sex I’ll be having will be WITH CONDOMS. Always. Forever.)

9 Doses in.

My antibiotics have, despite my efforts, interacted with my birth control pills I use to stop my periods (because they are crazy, make all my symptoms worse, and I had one for about eight months non stop) and now I’m spotting and having cramps.

I had my first rage in a while, that sucked as always.

I feel like shit.

I’m having brain zaps again on and off but thankfully they aren’t that bad….

Ugh.

rifampin

SO I just took my first dose of rifampin along with my doxy, and I’m scared. Not super scared, but just worried about how much I’m going to herx and feel like crap :/ Also hoping it doesn’t make me too nauseous, although it probably wasn’t smart of me to eat nachos beforehand hahaha Don’t worry I’m going to counteract it with some strawberry coconut milk ice cream. I’m so bad lol

1/19/14 IV rifampin.....

…….means business. Herxing since day 1. Now on day 3 and I can’t believe how much pain I’m in. Sore soles of my feet that it hurts to walk. Fingers hurt to close and my bones feel like they are being dipped in acid. Not to mention neck/shoulder stiffness, so nauseous 90% of the time, headaches, fatigue……the list goes on. Wish I could just sleep this away.

I know if I want to feel better i just need to throw up but then they’ll be worried but seriously it has to be this medicine I was reading the side effects and one of them is loss of appetite I’m not hungry ever and I’m tired of forcing food down my throat because it makes me feel sick like I need to puke that shit out
