I got a few Widelux rolls back from my Detroit trip a few weeks ago. Detroit is such and epic place and I had a mega tight crew of boyz out there. The trip was a really good blend of skating and just being a tourist. Oh, and lots of urban spelunking.

His apartment is conservatively and formally decorated, according to an article about collecting carousel animals in which he was interviewed. He owns a seven-foot mythical serpent which is prominently displayed in his living room.
—  One of our donors collects animal sculptures from carousels and other amusement park rides. I’m intrigued by what “conservative and formal” means to someone writing about collecting carousel animals.

Tony Hawk at Ride It Sculpture park today 8/21/13 Detroit, MI

Yup! Congrats to Ride It Sculpture Park and the city of Detroit. This is one of my favorite (and most successful) crowdsourcing projects I’ve come across - not only because its pretty cool and unique, but also well intentioned and impactful. The amount of attention this project’s garnered is unreal, attracting people from all over to check it out firsthand. A ‘who’s who’ of professional skateboarders have been in town over the last year - culminating today with one of the legends himself, Tony Hawk, giving it a go (Tony Alva and Paul Rodriguez - your next). And the most ridiculous part is, it isn’t even halfway finished yet.

This will no doubt get a lot of kids from the area into skateboarding; something positive in a part of the city riddled with poverty, violence, crime and drugs. Getting young people involved in positive activities outside of the classroom is imperative to putting them on a path to happiness and success in their lives - it shouldn’t be limited to high school athletics, student government, debate team, etc. That doesn’t cover all the bases. More creative activities - like art, music, skateboarding, etc. - are of equal importance. With the huge financial problems the city has endured, even a lot of these staple ‘extracurricular’ public school activities have seen huge cuts over the years. Which is why projects like this can be so impactful and important to a community. Big ups to all those involved, Ride It Sculpture Park and props to Tony Hawk for the most generous donation and exposure he’s given to the project.
