You can really sense this when you’re around him. On stage he’s loud, large,and in charge. Offstage, he kind of hunches and keeps his shoulders in, to make himself smaller. He speaks really softly too, clearly but softly. When he’s talking to you, he gives you his entire focus but keeps *himself* (size and voice) reined in.

Other than the "30 years ago" in the preface, are there any other clues that point towards it being set in 1880/1881? And what can you tell about the timeline, how much time passes in the story? When I was a kid I tried to figure it out and I think I came up with 8 months or so, but it's been a while and now I'm curious again.
