An altar to Mithras. Mithras was often worshiped by soldiers in the later Roman empire, and since many soldiers were based in the Rhine region, several of these altars have been found in and around Bonn.
The Roettgen Pieta is one of the most famous objects in Bonn’s Rheinisches Landesmuseum. It deliberately emphasizes the suffering and physical and emotional pain of Jesus and Mary. And I’d wanted to see it in person ever since my senior year of high school, when Mr. Curry showed it to our art history class!
