Miroir de la Mère

Miroir de la Mère was cut from Val Royeaux in 8:49 Blessed. It was the will of the mad Emperor Reville, who demanded a reflecting pool large enough to draw his vain deceased mother back across the Veil. Many shops and vendors were evicted to make room for his folly, and several memorials to the heroes of the first four Blights were simply toppled. The reservoir supports little in the way of life, as the bottom was lined with lead to increase its reflective properties. Reville intended it for divination, using boats as massive planchettes, but work was not finished until the week of his own death. The waters see little use today, save for lazy—or fornication—sojourns by the nobility aboard decorative gondolas.

Among those who honor Shiva’s destruction of his own phallus and his manifestation as Ardhanarishwar the intersex god are a group of Indian Hindus called the hijras. Literally, hijra means “man-minus-man.” Sociologically, it means much more than that. Hijras are not men, but neither are they women, and in their own country they were not always reviled, as some might expect. Rather, many have attained an exalted social status…Many intersex Indian children do become hijras. But intersex children are not the only children who become hijras. Hijras are not exactly men because, for one reason or another, they are incapable of performing the male role in sexual intercourse. And they are not strictly homosexuals, though some do have receptive sex with other men. But they do not, because of course they cannot, have sex with one another. Hijras are not exactly women, even though they do dress, wear their hair, and act somewhat like women. But unlike most Indian women, hijras may be aggressively sexual, dress garishly, dance in public, and curse offensively. And many hijras never have sex with men.

…And even though all hijras will claim they have been as they are from birth, not all were born intersex. Hijras are not simply intersex or impotent males. They receive their calling from a Bahuchara Mata, the Mother Goddess, who is also honored by transvestites. And that calling can come to physically normal boys as well as to intersex boys. If any child ignores the call, it is said he will be impotent in his next seven lives—an ignominious fate. Boys who receive the calling and are not intersex must undergo a dangerous surgery before they can call themselves true hijras. Interestingly, hijras call that surgery “the operation,” in English. A special hijra called a midwife performs the operation, which replicates many of the events of childbirth. With two quick cuts, the midwife removes both penis and testicles. Because the blood is part of the male principle, it is allowed to flow freely to rid the body of as much of the male as possible. A small hole is created for the urethra, and traditional rather than modern treatments are used to induce healing. After the surgery, others treat the new hijra much like they would treat a woman who has recently given birth. After healing, the new hijra dons a bridal costume and parades through the streets in a procession with other hijras. Once a boy, now something else, the person walks into a new life, something beyond man or woman.

Without Alfred Hitchcock’s wife, Alma Reville, the shower scene from Psycho would have been less intense. During editing, she found frames where Janet Leigh could be seen breathing. She also convinced Alfred, who insisted the scene have no music and refused to listen to the score, to watch the cut with the music, and it went on to become one of the most iconic scenes in Hollywood history.

When he accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute in 1979, Hitchcock acknowledged her influence on his work and life, saying, “I ask permission to mention by name only four people who have given me the most affection, appreciation, and encouragement, and constant collaboration. The first of the four is a film editor. The second is a scriptwriter. The third is the mother of my daughter, Pat. And the fourth is as fine a cook as ever performed miracles in a domestic kitchen. And their names are Alma Reville.”

Aaron Clarey isn’t really a Mad Max fan.

This is pretty clear already given that his viral rant about Fury Road doesn’t betray much knowledge of the franchise at all—he doesn’t seem aware that “the director of Fury Road” he reviles is, in fact, George Miller, the director of the entire Mad Max franchise. He calls one of the most iconic Australian cultural exports of all time a “piece of American culture.” He boldly states “No one barks orders to Max!” when, in fact, all three previous Mad Max films feature Max taking orders from someone (Roger Ward’s Captain Fifi in Mad Max, Michael Preston’s Papagallo in The Road Warrior, Tina Turner’s Auntie Entity in Beyond Thunderdome).

But the single biggest sign Clarey doesn’t know the first damn thing about what George Miller or Mad Max is his triumphalist line: “When the shit hits the fan, it will be men like Mad Max who will be in charge.”

Mad Max isn’t in charge of anything throughout the Mad Max film franchise. Max is emphatically not the archetype of the badass hero who gets the girl, gets the crown, and rules as a patriarch over society as is his due. He’s a fucked-up loner who isn’t fit to live among civilized people; who begins each film alone, wounded, broken, and who ends each film in the same state or worse.
All the Mad Max films have had tragic endings, and if you don’t grasp that this is the tragedy at the heart of Mad Max (and the gritty Westerns and samurai films Mad Max emulates) then you don’t get Mad Max. If you think Max has an awesome life and we’re supposed to wish we were him, you really don’t get Mad Max.

You Are More Than 7 Times As Likely To Be Killed By A Right-Wing Extremist Than By Muslim Terrorists

Friday afternoon, one week after elected officials all over the country tried to block Syrian refugees from entering their states in an apparent effort to fight terrorism, a white man in Colorado committed what appears to be an act of terrorism in a Planned Parenthood clinic.Though the details of Robert Lewis Dear’s motives for killing three people in the clinic and injuring nine others are still being revealed, Dear reportedly told law enforcement “no more baby parts,” an apparent reference to heavily edited videos produced by the Center for Medical Progress, which numerous politicians have cited to falsely claim that Planned Parenthood sells “aborted baby parts.” Dear’s actions, in other words, appear to be an act of politically motivated terrorism directed against an institution widely reviled by conservatives.
My Generation Will End Abortion.

Today, I stood with my school, my Church, and the unborn in the Walk for Life West Coast (

On average, about 1 million lives are lost every year to abortion. Today, in San Francisco, California, thousands of men and women marched to voice their view that that number should be 0. Thank you to pro-life people everywhere who make a commitment to life.

After posting a picture on Instagram, I got some criticism from my liberal friends, which I expected, but it just reminds me of Matthew 5:11:

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.”

Remember to pray for those who disagree with you, to love your enemies, and to keep fighting for a world where all of God’s children get a chance at life (and that means providing care and resources for mothers too!).
