Anon asked: sorry i keep asking dick and jason questions but can you like do an overview of their personalities and like use in-text examples? its hard for me to get a grasp on characters and their mannerisms and personalities.
Quick Background: Jason practically grew up on the streets as a kid. Between his father who was stuck in a perpetual revolving door of prison sentences and a drug addicted mother, he didn’t have much of a family life before joining the Batfamily. His father was murdered by Two-face and his mother died of an overdose, leaving a young Jason to survive on the streets. Batman found Jason one night while Jason was in the process of stealing the tires off the Batmobile. Bruce will eventually come to take in Jason and give him the mantle of being the second Robin. After only being Robin for a few years he is murdered at the age of 16 by the Joker. He is resurrected by the Lazarus Pit and has since become the problematic character that we all know and love.
(Character qualities and In-text examples are under the read more)
We’ve managed to slip evolution’s leash now, haven’t we? We can cure any disease, keep even the weakest of us alive and one fine day perhaps we shall even resurrect the dead, call forth Lazarus from his cave. Do you know what that means? That means we are done, that this is as good as we’re going to get.
A/N: I hope you all love it. I just got so bored and needed to write something. I’m really in a writing mood right now so please send requests!!!!!!
It had been a long night and he was just coming home from patrol. Jason climbed up the fire escape just thinking about how angry she’d probably be. Bruce always gave him crap about his jobs and his wounds then lectured him. He could see it now.
“Jason this is why we don’t go out looking for fights. We’re supposed to defend the people.”
“Why don’t we stop the fights before they can happen. And I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve taken care of about twenty seven drug lords in the past two weeks.”
“By taken care of you mean kill.”
“I don’t give a fuck about your no killing rules Bruce. If they’re motivated they’ll come back.”
“Not everyone gets resurrected in the Lazarus Pit, Jason.”
He just hoped you would understand.
Jason sneaks through the window and checks the area. He doesn’t know why. This is his apartment, but it’s a habit he made throughout the years from being under the radar. The lights are on in the kitchen making the home itself look relaxing and calm. He looks over at the living room. The TV is on casting colors of light onto the wall like a rainbow. He comes closer only to see her on the couch out cold. He grinned when he saw her messy hair and how she was sprawled out on the couch in his t-shirt. She probably tried to wait up for him again. Jason scooped her up in his arms and took her to their room.
Jason woke up to light beams coming through his windows. He reached out to pull her closer, but there was no one there. He peeled his eyes open to look for any sign of her. Then, he heard glass break in the kitchen and his heart stopped. He grabbed his pocket knife that was sitting on the night stand and slowing made his way to the kitchen.
She was kneeling on the ground picking up glass from a shattered plate she had dropped. The smell of burnt pancakes filled the room. He sat the pocket knife on the kitchen counter and smirked down at her.
“Shut up,” she mumbled tossing the glass into the garbage can. She flopped onto the couch covering her face with her hands. “I just wanted to make you breakfast.”
Jason walked over to the stove and turned off the burners eyeing the black pancakes. He laughed,“I think you should leave the cooking to me.”
“You just think you’re a top chef because Alfred taught you how to cook.” Jason bent down to her level and removed her hands from her face. He grinned and kissed her nose.
“Babe I love you, but your cooking’s gonna put me in the hospital.”
“I’m not the one that’s gonna put you in the hospital,” she scolded and pulled up his shirt inspecting the new bruises littering his body.
“No,” she interrupted, “Shhh. Don’t speak just make me food. I’m starving.”
I have a ways to go because there is so much, but this is a start; so feel free to check back on this thread periodically.

King James I of England, who authorized the translation of the now famous King James Bible, was considered by many to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, monarchs that England has ever seen.
They said fock it, deny any proof of anyone else standing there, and give him straight hair. We only need to prove there is a Mary and a Christ.

Imagine being a former SHIELD Agent and one of the Canary Sisters. Now Imagine having helped the Avengers fight Loki and Steve calling you for help when Civil War breaks out. And Imagine Bucky recognizing you as a member of the League of Assassins. (Reader is Laurel’s twin sister that was on the Queen’s Gambit with Sara and Ollie and was also resurrected by the Lazarus Pit. Post Laurel’s death).
You know you need to help Steve. The accords were terrible that much you could see. But you where so focus on Laurel’s death and seeking revenge against Darhk, you did even hear Steve’s plan, that’s probably what got you guy arrested. You not thinking straight.
Sure Steve broke you and the others that stayed behind to fight well him and Bucky went off to finish the mission. But that just meant you were fugitives and that you couldn’t return to Star City.
“Do you need something” You asked not even turning to face the super soldiers that leaned against the door frame.
“For a well I’d been wondering why I had vague memories of you” Bucky said getting your attention. “Then I realized your League of Assassins.”
“Former League of Assassins” I corrected him. “I left after I was killed and then resurrected in the Lazarus Pit.”
Hi so question, what kind of return do you imagine for tim or more like, what kind of return would you write for him after presumed dead?
Hm. To be honest, I’m kind of the wrong person to ask about this because I’m still salty that Tim was presumed dead in the first place and that nobody thought “hey, maybe Timmy isn’t dead??? maybe he’s gone back in time or been resurrected in the lazarus pit or kidnapped or some crazy shit like every single other death in the batfam?”
But. If I was writing a “Tim has been presumed dead” arc, I honestly would have gone with his return being the result of the batfam searching for him. Be it Damian, or Bruce, or even Jason or Dick or Steph (oooh, Steph going rogue and searching for Tim with Cass? hell yes, sign me up). I don’t like this whole idea of Tim coming back and finding out everyone thought he was dead and thus had given up on him, because a) been there done that, and b) listen, it’s just not convincing with all the crazy involving death that this family has gone through.
So give me everyone fighting to free him from whatever dimensional prison he’s being held in. Give me Tim breaking down in weary relief because his mind had been replaying every single episode of abandonment he had faced in his life. He had been convincing himself “they’ve forgotten about me” because he remembered how everyone had accepted Bruce’s “death”. How he was the only one who had stubbornly denied it and ended up being right. Give me coming back and having to face and vocalise the fears that had been poisoning him for months, to the point where looking his family in the eye is too much because Tim had come to terms with the fact that they weren’t coming. That he was going to be stuck there forever. That he was going to die there. Alone. He had come to terms with the fact the he was dispensable, insignificant, and Bruce and the others would carry on without him just fine.
That he was nothing.
And then… they came. They proved him wrong in an imitation of his stubborn denial of what seemed to be clear, and had searched deeper, beyond the external facts and obvious assumptions of his death. And they had found him. And Bruce is holding his son in his arms as he sobs and whispering reassuringly that he’s safe now…
since the bts for the finale shows them saying that ra’s al ghul wants to replace alfred to bruce and be the father figure and for bruce to be his heir, and since they also said that ra’s can get bruce to cross the line that he never should…
i bet they’re gonna get bruce to kill alfred
either bruce kills alfred or ra’s will do it himself, but alfred’s death is gonna be what breaks bruce’s conditioning
and then they’ll resurrect alfred somehow using the lazarus pit
What is Tim's relationship with his parents? I keep seeing dissimilarities in the comics and fics that I don't really know which is true. Some portray his parents as negligent seeing that they usually travel and leave Tim alone at home. Some say he has a close relationship with his dad seeing he was really heartbroken and almost resurrect him using the lazarus pit.
Hey! I’m going to give my own answer to this, but let me first attach some posts from @syntactition who writes wonderful Tim fanfiction and posts and really helped me gain a grasp on Tim’s character. She’s made some wonderful posts on this subject here, here, here, here, and here to start. There’s a ton more, just… check out all her stuff, it’s great.
Damn, now after reviewing all her marvelous work, I don’t think I’m capable of describing the how uninterested the Drakes were in parenting so let me give you the cliff notes version.
- Very young Tim (~3-5) visits the circus with his folks and snaps the last pic with the Flying Graysons before witnessing their murder. He mentioned in ALPoD that the event gave him horrible nightmares.
- Tim discovering Batman and Robin’s identity at age 9 due to Robin performing ick’s iconic quadruple somersault (it is of the opinion of this fan and other fics that Tim became a bit obsessed with Dick following the hug at the circus which was why he was able to ID Robin so easily.) He then turns his attention to B&R in general.
- It’s stated over and over in the early comics that Tim’s parents were away almost constantly. Tim never actually knows where they are in the world, they’re on the brink of divorce, Tim barely gets more than postcard from them with 2 or 3 sentences.
- Tim is beginning his Robin training, doubting himself, when Jack and Janet are kidnapped. Bruce tries to save them but Janet dies and Jack is left in a coma. It’s not really openly stated, but it’s kind of assumed Tim is staying with Bruce while his father is in the hospital. It could be writing, but Tim isn’t overly sad after the initial shock of his mother’s death. I say it’s because he loved her as an ideal, but he didn’t really know her as a person.
- Time passes, Tim grows as Robin and gains some friends and confidence and boom, Jack Drake is awake, wheelchair bound and ready to make things right with his only son. Not. Jack is constantly nagging at Tim for not spending more time with his Dad (despite the fact that Jack does whatever he wants regardless of Tim), he’s angry at Bruce for being a better paternal figure than he was and once Jack starts dating his PT Jack basically says ‘bye son’ and goes back to his own life. Tim isn’t too surprised at any of this and is just trying to keep his vigilante career going.
- Again, more time passes and Tim is struggling with his dad. Jack is… really being a shitty parents overall. Because Tim is being ‘problematic’ (IE not being this perfect son Jack expected and to do whatever he wanted) he keeps trying to send Tim to boarding school. Tim is visibly injured and his dad, talking to his face, doesn’t notice or care. Jack regains his ability to walk, marries Dana and things are still tense but manageable.
- Then, whoops, Tim’s been outed as Robin. Still not clear on exactly what happened there. Anyway, Jack is pissed and forces Tim to stop being Robin. Tim does which is when Stephanie takes over. Jack, again, is being a shitty parent and getting angry over the fact that Tim isn’t happy with his new, civilian life cut off from all the people who’ve supported him while Jack was doing his own thing. Tim tries to make an effort to bond and eventually he and Jack are better able to form a tentative relationship
- Steph dies and Jack has some weird change of heart and let’s Tim be Robin again. Tim and Jack now have a better relationship that’s… kinda out of nowhere. But Tim is Robin and clearly working on repairing a relationship he’s never really had.
- But! Jack is targeted due to his relation to Tim and is killed by Captain Boomerang. Tim is incredibly upset, I’ve said my reasons for that here in this post because to me; Jack and Tim never had a good relationship but Tim mourned the possibility of one happening that likely never would have.
- Now whenever Tim’s parent are mentioned it’s very tragic and they were loving and perfect but??? they say absence makes the heart grow fonder and, again, it’s my opinion Tim mourned the idea of loving parents. That he convinced himself that their treatment of his was normal and okay and maybe even deserved but they were his and he loved him despite the fact that they didn’t treat him right
Okay so last night I suddenly thought - what if Bruce had been killed by the Joker instead of Jason?
Think about a Jason who has to live with the idea that he went looking for a mother who didn’t even want him and got the only person who ever cared for him killed. Jason who meets Dick for the first time when he comes back for the funeral and they hate each other and themselves for the same reason. Jason hates Dick because he left them and hates himself for not being a good enough replacement. Dick hates Jason for getting Bruce killed but he hates himself for leaving too.
Jason who has burn scars on his hands for the rest of his life because he dug through the too-hot rubble trying to find a heartbeat and only found heartbreak. Jason who watches Dick become Batman, watches Dick replace him with Tim, Steph, Cass. Jason who spends countless nights in the manor while the others patrol pouring over every file they have on the Joker, trying to find out what happened. Nobody’s seen the clown in ages. Maybe he died with Bruce.
Bruce who is resurrected in the Lazarus Pool by Talia and Ra’s as a violent, confused monster. Bruce who can barely remember his own name but who is told that all those jumbled memories were just visions from the pool. Who is told he’s been training with the League for years, that he loves Talia.
Bruce who stands in a cell, fists bloodied from beating the walls, half out of it and yells I have a son because he can remember seeing a small child with black hair and blue eyes. Talia who says of course don’t you remember? and shows him Damian, maybe five, six years old, black hair, blue eyes.
Bruce who spends months, maybe years being drugged and led around, first believing that he’s League then pretending that he still does. Who tries his best to teach Damian that family, love does not equal pain and undying loyalty like Talia demands. Who waits and waits until the right moment to escape with his son, to return to his other children, to his city.
Jason who answers the door to Wayne Manor one morning, years later. He’s older, rougher, hateful, depressed, a failure, useless, self-destructive, his name and fine haven’t been used in the same sentence for ages. He smells like cigarette smoke and high proof liquor and he hasn’t slept in two days.
Since you did silly/tired Tim headcanons, do you have any silly/tired Jason headcanons?
Jason didn’t know how to swim before Bruce got ahold of him. Hey, he was an inner-city kid, and his parents couldn’t exactly be bothered to take him to the public pool. Where was he gonna swim? Bruce had to give him lessons. They went well, but there was a fair amount of “no I don’t WANT to put my head in the water!!” involved.
Jason uses his hands a lot when he talks. When he gets really tired, he loses his train of thought halfway through a sentence and ends up staring into space with his hands out in front of him, midway through elaborate gestures. It’s very confusing. His aim isn’t great when he’s tired either– bystanders have to watch out, or they might accidentally get slapped.
If he gets really sleep deprived, sometimes he forgets how big he is. It’s because the majority of his growth spurt happened while he was non responsive: post-resurrection, pre-Lazarus. When that happens, he misjudges his own size and bumps into doorways, furniture, and/or people. It’s endearing, in a sad kind of way… unless you get steamrolled by a 6′0 brickhouse that still thinks he’s 4′6. Then it’s mostly annoying.
His most common hand gesture is the double snap/finger gun combo, because that’s how he finishes all of his jokes. And puns. It’s mostly puns, usually about how he died that one time.
Back when he was Robin, Jason used to play his guitar on street corners– it started out as cover for a case, but it was fun, and he got a lot of tips. He was proud to earn his own money. Alfred still has videotapes: tiny lil Jason singing love songs to a crowd of pedestrians.
omg i don't know if you played arkham knight or not but there was this picture floating around a few months ago that compared robin!jason to adult!jason and he looked so different, and it just occurred to me that the reason he looks so different is probably because of all the damage the joker did to his face. do you think it's the same in normal continuity as well. because that would be so fucked...
I do play Arkham Knight, i even stream it at the moment for people, but I’m currently too busy crashing the car into walls, being stumped by the Riddler (Batman’s TRUE nemesis) and being a fail!Batman to get that far into it.
I don’t think in comics continuity Jason’s face was damaged that way. If there was some post-resurrection, his dip in the Lazarus Pit would’ve taken care of it, and at no point does anyone have trouble recognizing his face.
i was going thru the Jason Todd tag and I saw ur hc where scavenger animals attack ppl resurrected from the lazarus pit and now all i can imagine is Jason constantly getting attacked by vultures
Maybe they don’t attack but just have a fond attraction to them? I imagine that scavengers follow Lazarus Zombies around, and always have a special interest in them, since they are undead. Not exactly aggressive, but curious.
Or it could go the other way, where they are completely horrified by the walking dead. It’s definitely a fun headcannon to play with.
