rest of the story for later

I’ve been thinking a lot about the ending of Memnoch the Devil lately. More specifically, about how I’ve seen people dismiss Armand’s attempted suicide along with the rest of the book, as it being too out of character or too far into the realm of “later canon” to be worthy of much attention.

But the thing is, the young me that read MtD for the first time and had no access to the internet wasn’t able to do ~research~ and obsess over what Anne might have intended with this thing or the other, which meant that I was completely free to interpret everything I read in any way that I wanted.

So when I read about Armand running into the sun after hearing Lestat’s story, my mind went straight to that quote from Queen of the Damned: “’I’ll tell you what I fear,’ Armand had said, intense as any young student. ‘That it’s chaos after you die, that it’s a dream from which you can’t wake. Imagine drifting half in and out of consciousness, trying vainly to remember who you are or what you were. Imagine straining forever for the lost clarity of the living.’“

And so I saw Armand as someone who had lost the will to live centuries ago, and was simply going on out of fear that there was nothing after death. And I saw Lestat’s “revelation” that there was as the push that finally gave him the courage to end it. I still can’t completely shake off that interpretation and it still breaks my heart.

anonymous asked:

pls expand on your ridiculous experiences during one semester at a fake college

okay I got a few asks about this so let me see what I can remember right now. These might not all be in chronological order

- At orientation, they were talking about the reservation near campus and all these pretty sites and this kid in the back of the auditorium goes “So uhh…heard this place might be built over a Native American burial ground?”

- The speaker: “…Let’s not think about that, okay?”

- The freshman were on campus alone for like a week and a half (other than the RA’s) before the other students and I just. The parties. Were out of control. An ambulance was called basically every night.

- I walked into the bathroom the first night there to find a girl literally dying because someone slipped something in her drink and she was having a Very Bad Reaction

- Sting- you know, the singer- ‘s son lived in my residence hall. This boy almost accidentally killed me on three separate occasions (while I was just trying to do my laundry)

- I told my family about this at Thanksgiving. Everyone in the room advised me to seduce him

- I ate breakfast in the dining hall exactly once. I got scrambled eggs. I noticed no one had brought out ketchup with the condiments and politely asked about it. I received glares from at least ten different people. Apparently people there don’t believe in ketchup on eggs.

- There were these two boys in my English class known as “The Lumbard Guys”. They didn’t live in my residence hall, but they would come over almost every night, start a party, and destroy part of the basement.

- At orientation this one kid got mad and set his shoe on fire to prove a point

- Also at orientation like??? My roommate disappeared???? And I never saw her again???

- Listen like…this campus just looked like the perfect setting for a horror film, but none of the people from the area got that. They all thought I was crazy until some comic from Comedy Central did a stand up act and said “Why the hell is this campus so creepy? I feel like I’m gonna leave here with someone else wearing my face!”. I felt way too validated.

- ALL OF MY CLASSES WERE SO FAKE

- My “math” class was actually a disguised home ec. course???? All we had were word problems that were incredibly detailed recipes or instructions on how to fix things. The teacher, who I swear to GOD was actually my Mr-Rogers-Wannabe guidance counselor from high school in disguise, spent more time trying to come up with names and backstories for the models in the text book than actually trying to teach

- I had to take a class called “first year seminar” because neither of my parents went to college. It was supposed to be teaching you about how the school works and stuff but SUPRISE BITCH WE’RE JUST GONNA YELL ABOUT RACISM AND PRIVELGE FOR AN HOUR.

- Literally that’s all we did. Just the whole class bonding over all these struggles we had gone through and getting fired up. Like, it was great, but I also ended up knowing very little about campus and school stuff bc that was the class that was supposed to be teaching me lmao

- My Psych teacher was fucking hysterical for the first few classes but then he just. Vanished. I had to drop the class

- My Fine Arts teacher just. Couldn’t stick to a teaching plan. Her entire wardrobe was scarves. She was very passionate about African masks. She had a flapper haircut. She spoke quietly, but with a marvelously forced tone of voice that I’m certain was her trying to sound impressive and hide a Boston accent. She didn’t seem to understand the year was 2014. She took us into the city to go to the Art Museum and we lost her in there, never to be seen again

- I’m not even kidding

- My “writing” teacher was my absolute fav omfg. She was this long grey haired hippie lady who worked as a nurse for the Grateful Dead and was still stuck there. She may or may not have hooked up with my uncle. I was her favorite student because one day I came in wearing a “HAIR” shirt. She wanted to take the class to England for the sole purpose of going on a Beatles tour

- But like…she did not teach a writing class omfg. She taught a social justice class. All we did was have informed debates about The Issues and listen to music and occasionally watch the Breakfast Club. Every time there was a big paper due on the syllabus, she’d just sit on her desk and go “I mean, I don’t have to cover anything, right? You guys know how to write!” Like I genuinely don’t think she knew what class she was teaching

- There was a boy who sat next to me in that class. He was deaf in one ear and used that as an excuse when he got caught blatantly not paying attention. It worked every time. But I was right next to him. I saw him playing Yu-Gi-Oh on some website on his phone under the table. One time we started talking about model cars and he pre-cummed.

- There was a boy who roamed the campus in a long black trench coat and a weird hat. I never saw his body and started to suspect he might not have one, just the theory of one. He took interest in me because I was the only person in class who ever got his Doctor Who jokes. He’d come up to me at dinner and blast quiz me on various nerd culture before running off and disappearing into the shadows. Just as I was starting to grudgingly accept I was probably going to have to eventually hook up with him for the greater good, I apparently offended him by saying I like Picard more than Kirk. He didn’t stick around to listen to my reasoning. Whenever I saw him after that he would loudly start talking about how great his girlfriend was. Everyone knew he was lying. I wonder if Kirk ever sucked his theoretical dick as well as I would have.

- I gave a football player a shout out on Yik Yak. He really appreciated it, and gave me some fries laced with weed as a thanks. That was such A Night ™ , I watched the Lorax and left the dimension.

- Every time we had dances, this creepy guy named Horace would find me and use my obvious discomfort to make me dance with him. He’d hold my wrists and shove his crotch on mine while vaguely swaying to the beat. I had to escape to the bathroom every few minutes. Finally the security just banned him from the events altogether. I can still see his face clearly in my mind.

- One night, I walked into the bathroom to find a perfect, untouched pizza laying on the floor…but not in a box. Someone literally just took it out of the box and laid it down. I’m still fuming.

- One time I was in the mostly empty library when I smelled something. I walked down the rows of shelves before rounding the corner, and found the President of the college hidden there, sitting on the floor, smoking, a bottle of vodka in his hands. We held eye contact for a solid minute. He slowly shook his head at me. I said “Sir, your house is like…literally across the street.” He shook his head more vigorously. I left the library.

- One night, I heard screaming. I looked out the window to find a girl in a giraffe costume scaling my building. People were throwing water bottles at her. I was concerned. I didn’t know who to talk to for answers.

- I was in line trying to pay for dinner. One of the lunch ladies climbed on top of the ice cream machine and refused to come down. Her friend came over and they started recreating the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. Very few people acknowledged it.

- Someone jacked up the soda dispenser so it was only dispensing beer. None of the staff cared enough to fix it.

- I caught my RA in the middle of a drug deal so she gave me a coupon for free ice cream

- Also side note: The soft served ice cream machine on campus was actually a frozen yogurt machine. I had no problem with that, but like, advertise correctly, you know? Nobody else seemed to understand my confusion. Nobody else seemed to understand that froyo and ice cream are two different things. What the hell.

- There were just…so many moths all over the campus. A terrifying amount. When it started getting colder I was like, finally, I won’t be attacked by moths anymore! Only for even more moths to appear. I asked a local about it. “Oh, those are the winter moths!” What the fuck are winter moths? What the fuck, Massachusetts? My friend back home grew convinced that Mothman was in the area. I was inclined to believe her. Sometimes I close my eyes and all I can see are moths everywhere, waiting for the moment to strike.

-  I’ve encountered deer many times in my life. I know how they act around people. But the deer on this campus were just weird. They’d run out at people all the time. One almost shoved me into traffic.

- My roommate gave my phone number out to literally anyone she found who mentioned they liked to read or liked Doctor Who. She was concerned I had no friends. No one ever called.

- I met a small Greek girl in my Fine Arts class. Our first day of talking, she made me climb a mountain with her so she could get to tutoring, even though I had no reason to be in that building. Her roommates kept mysteriously disappearing. She was late to everything. She’d call me randomly to get food at 1 in the morning. She kept somehow breaking phones and tvs and other electronics. When I asked her how they kept breaking, she waved it off with “Oh, I have OCD. You wouldn’t understand”. I have OCD, and I still don’t understand. One time she invited me out with her friends from high school. I waited outside her building for two hours, while the other friends waited in the parking lot for two hours, because we didn’t know how to find each other. She eventually came outside at 10:30 pm. We went to Friendly’s. She made us stop at her house so she could grab something. We pulled up a long, winding driveway and stopped in a parking lot. At the end of the parking lot were stone stairs that lead up to a mansion on a hill. She ran inside and the rest of us stayed in the car, listening to High School Musical and talking about Supernatural. When she came out 40 minutes later we decided to try and prank her. It went wrong. We almost ran over her friend’s sister with the car. They invited me to a pumpkin patch. When I started complaining about my roommate, she asked me to move in with her. I thought about the other three girls who had seemingly gone missing. I politely declined. Six months after I left the school, I received a text from her asking for notes for an exam, and radio silence after that. I can’t find her on facebook. I fear she might have gone missing too.

- One night, as I was standing outside huddled in the cold, a boy came up and offered me a cigarette to help me stay warm. I turned it down, but he stood around talking to me for a few minutes afterwards. I felt absolutely no awkwardness at all. He was a musician from Colorado. He sang a bit of one of his songs. He was dropping out of school to go to California the next week. He told me I had beautiful eyes, but his were the most alive eyes I’ve ever seen so I couldn’t believe the compliment. We talked for about ten minutes and I fell a little bit in love. He had to rush off to a club meeting, but he told me he’d rather keep talking. He gave me the sweetest smile before he left. I didn’t get his last name or number and I never saw him again.

- There was a dance on Halloween. I couldn’t think of a sufficiently slutty yet classy costume, so I just went as Osgood from Doctor Who. When I got there there was a huge crowd, but people quickly grew bored and started leaving. There ended up being six people left (myself included). We stayed because we could see the upset faces of everyone who had planned the event, but actually had one of the most fun nights of my life. We- myself, the girl from across the hall, Trench Coat Boy, his tiny friend who never spoke, and a boy and girl I didn’t know who seemed to be professional dancers- danced nonstop for almost three hours. The strobe lights and poppy music solidified an unspoken bond. I had never and to this day haven’t felt as free as I did that night. The tiny quiet boy’s smile could have lit up a city. It’s etched into my mind. We all left the dance talking about the surreal feeling in the air, as if something had shifted. None of us ever mentioned the dance again. It’s still one of my fondest memories.

- For a solid month, there was someone in a gorilla costume running around campus.

- There was a rash of sexual assaults on campus. A gang of boys kept jumping girls in the woods. The only thing the school board did was give out free rape whistles at lunch one day. I missed that day, making me one of the only students on campus without a whistle. Later that night when I ordered pizza, the delivery guy tried to start up a conversation with me about all the assaults. He blamed the girls. I took back my tip.

- Sometimes the showers just…filled up with black sludge. No one knew why.

- The girls in the room next to me were very bizarre. They always shot me odd looks and whispered to each other constantly. I couldn’t figure out if they were sleeping together or not. They never washed their hands when we were in the bathroom.

- The doors to each dorm were thick and heavy and required effort to push them open. My roommate and I made sure to lock ours every night, and would triple check it. It swung open by itself almost every night. The channels on the tv would change with the remote equidistance away from us. Sometimes I heard humming in the showers when I was the only one in there.

- My roommate…deserves a whole separate post dedicated to her, honestly.

- She would call her mother and have her do her homework for her. She blasted music constantly, and it was either country or hard rap, nothing in between. She sexiled me constantly. I once walked in on anal. She’d meet guys on Tinder, fall in love with them after a couple of days, and then bring them into the school and into our room like it was no big deal. One of them made it clear he was a budding serial killer. She was in a new drama every week. One time someone called her a dilf on Yik Yak. She was firmly convinced her cousin was blonde because her aunt dyed her hair when she was pregnant. She tried her hardest to get me laid by a football player. She was the loudest drunk I’ve ever encountered. Honestly there’s just too much about her for this omfg

- John Zaffis, the famous paranormal researcher, came to the school on my birthday. I went because I’m a loser who’s been watching shows with him since I was a kid, and I was having a bad day so I decided it could be a treat. I sat in the front row. He held an uncomfortable amount of eye contact with me the entire presentation. He was impressed with my questions. He lamented about the fact he’s always cut out of movies or replaced by priests that look like him. He apparently came to the school every year around Halloween to do a ghost tour around the campus for the students. A girl allegedly killed herself in my floor’s bathroom. He apparently always got a lot of activity around the campus. Everyone in the freshman class started wondering if the rumors about the Native American burial ground were true.

- One time in “writing” class the teacher gave us a number and then whatever song came up as that when we put our music on shuffle we had to play for the class. I ended up with “Touch Me” from Spring Awakening. Midway through the song, the teacher from another class came to complain that they could hear everything. My teacher tried to defend that all music has an important message. “Molly, dear, tell her the message in this song!” I looked around the room and at the other teacher. “It’s about sex,” I said quietly. She stormed out of the room while the class started laughing.

- There was this girl that just had the natural ability to make anything boring. I feel bad saying that, because she’s such a sweet girl, and she’s smart, and she’s gorgeous, and she’s talented, but just…every time she says anything, it’s boring. I’m still friends with her on facebook, the talent transcends to writing as well. You could be having a fun, lively conversation and she could say something completely relevant to the point and yet it would still just be boring. It’s a baffling talent, I still don’t understand how she does it.

- There was a boy who’d come into my room. He lusted over my s’mores poptarts. He kept trying to hit the high notes in Broadway songs. He didn’t understand my sense of humor at all, so we both were constantly worried we were offending each other. He cried about Selena Gomez a lot.

- The dining hall only offered horrendous food. I had pasta almost every night because it was the only thing remotely edible. If you wanted good food, you had to go to Late Night, which was between like 10:30 and 1 I think??? They set it up specifically for stoners and people leaving parties. I was frequently the only sober person there. Except for the moths.

- The chief at the pasta place found out I like theater and got like…weirdly passionate about it. He kept telling me about different theater groups in the area and wanted to know if I was in the school musical. He asked me every time I went up for food.

- There was a disproportionate amount of large black birds to trees. It wasn’t hard to figure out why we so rarely saw smaller animals

- When I told my advisor I was thinking about leaving (mostly for financial reasons but also the fake classes were preventing me from getting an education I wanted, you know?), this little old man looked around his office as if checking for people listening in, then put his hand on top of mine, leaned in close, and whispered “Oh, you sweet little girl. Run as fast as you can.”

There’s definitely more but listen. This school was weird and fake and vaguely surreal and off-kilter. I am fully afraid that one day, years from now, I’m going to be driving through the back roads and pass the place where the campus should be, only I won’t find anything there at all, and won’t be able to find any trace of it ever existing. I won’t be able to find any record of it. I won’t be able to find a record of any of the people. Every time I think about this place I just get a weird feeling, like I somehow managed to escape the Twilight Zone but left a part of me behind in the process. Be careful when applying to college, kids.

The 8 Steps of a CHARACTER ARC

You know that moment as a writer, when you’ve been charging through the story, high on how fantastic it is, and then suddenly…it all STOPS.  The next scene doesn’t form in your head. You’ve got nothing.

Behind your characters, a string of bright and captivating scenes mark the trail of that rocket of inspiration; ahead of your characters, a foggy expanse, stretching to who-knows-where, a few shapeless blobs that should be scenes floating in the nothingness. The rocket is dead, and not refueling any time soon.

Well, to everybody who’s suffered this, or is currently suffering it, there’s a way to navigate through that fog. A map. Directions and a destination.

Or, more specifically, events that form the underlying structure of the story.

This post is going to focus on one facet of story structure: character arc. Structure is something people subconsciously recognize and expect, and if the story doesn’t match those expectations, they feel cheated (though usually can’t explain why). Every good story follows a structure. So if you know structure, you’ll always know where to go next, and won’t get lost in the fog.

So here are the 8 steps of a character arc:

1) Hero: Strength, Weakness, and Need

This happens in the setup of the story, when the main character’s ordinary world is being introduced. First, the main character’s strengths must be displayed; we must be given a reason to like them, or if not exactly “like” them, empathize with them, and be fascinated by them. The reader needs to bond with the character, feel concerned about how it all turns out for them. Or in other words, feel that the main character is worth experiencing the story. There are easy traits that do this: courage, love, humor, being in danger, being unfairly treated, being highly skilled at something, having a powerful noble goal. (Courage is the one they all need. If the character doesn’t have the gumption to actively pursue what they want, they are automatically a background character.)

After this, still in the beginning of your story, let the character exhibit what needs to change. Show their weaknesses of character and self awareness.
And lastly, hint at what they NEED to learn. Sometimes this is even stated to the character, and they don’t understand it, refuse to believe it, or condemn it. Like “A Christmas Carol”, when Scrooge’s nephew says his speech about Christmas and how wonderful it is, and Scrooge replies “Bah Humbug!"

2) Desire: This is the moment when the character knows what they need to pursue, in order to obtain what they inwardly want. It is not the inciting incident or catalyst, the event in a story that disrupts the ordinary world and calls the hero on an adventure. This is a separate step entirely, occurring after that catalyst has shattered life as the main character knows it. They believe obtaining this goal will calm whatever inner turmoil or conflict they’re battling. And always, they’re not quite right.
Think of Mr Fredricksen: His goal is to get the house – a  symbolic representation of Ellie and the life he shared with her – to Paradise Falls, which he believes will heal his grief and guilt. It won’t. Once he obtains it, the achievement feels hollow. But I’m getting ahead of myself. So on we go!

3) Plan: Once in Act Two, the character is going to scramble for a plan of action. The inner want has solidified into a tangible goal, but they need a strategy to achieve it. This also spells out for the reader what to expect in that second act.

4) Conflict: What’s going to try stopping them? A hero with a goal is one thing, but to make it a story we need something that stands in the way. An obstacle. A force of opposition. If we didn’t have obstacles, books would be as interesting as "Harry Potter and the Trip to the Grocery Store.” (Although honestly, I’d probably read that.) After the catalyst has changed everything, after the character crosses the threshold into Act Two, everything from here on out will be laden with conflict. This is usually when enemies, or more accurately forces of opposition, begin to appear. Everything is accumulating to complicate the main character’s pathway to achieving what they want. The forces of opposition come from not only the villains, but from the actions that have to be taken to achieve the desire. Whatever this action is, it’s exactly what the main character is not suited to do, an action that pressures their flaws, exposes them to exactly what they need to become but can’t right now.

Like Stitch being forced to be the family dog. He’s not suited to this task.

5) Battle: The forces of opposition are amping up, growing stronger, fighting with greater intensity. The main character is taking the punches and working around them, relentlessly plowing forward. Hero and allies are usually punching back too.

6) Midpoint: This is the event where they first encounter what they need to learn, what they need to become. Something happens that forces them to behave in this new, life-saving way. But once they’ve seen it, they don’t know what to do with this knowledge.

7) Dark Night, Revelation, Choice:
This is always the darkest point in the story, where all seems lost, and death – of a literal or spiritual nature – is in the air. And in this moment, something usually happens that makes the main character wake up to what is wrong, and what they need. More often than not, this revelation will arrive from the “love story” or relationship of the plot, and will be the thing that helps them pull themselves out of despair and see the light. And once this is uncovered, once the revelation of the truth about themselves is recognized, they are faced with a choice. Of course, they’ve been faced with choices in every beat of every scene, but this is the big choice that is going to determine if their story has a happy ending or a tragic one. The choice is this: “You are being faced the truth that you need to heal. Are you going to choose what you need, let your old self die, and become someone better?” And always, always, always this is a hard choice. The revelation must be significant to them. And it’s never easy. It can’t be. We don’t write stories about heroes who make easy choices. Villains have it easy. Are you going to adopt this new way of living, adopt this truth, and let your old self die? Or are you going to stay the way you are (which feels safer and is much less challenging) but end up stuck in a sort of living death? Most of the time, of course, they choose the right thing.

This moment is usually always the saddest scene in the thing. Like this scene with Stitch.

8) New Life: This is their changed life. After experiencing the trials of the story, after realizing what they need and choosing to be reborn, they are going to be different people – and are going to live a different life. This is what follows the statement “And every day after …” What has changed? Show the audience how things are different, how things are better, because they want to see that. This is the resolution, the wrapping up of everything we’ve been through with the main character, and having this in the story is often what gives that feeling of satisfaction after seeing a really well-told story.

So! To show off how this works, I’ve chosen the character arc of Carl from Up.

1) Hero: Strengths, Weakness, Need

Strengths: Reasons to like Carl are packed into that heartbreaking opening sequence. By the end of it, we love him, love Ellie, and are crying our eyes out.

Weaknesses: Now Carl is curmudgeonly, grumpy, cold, and won’t pay attention to a living soul. He’s also plagued by grief, regret, guilt, and loneliness. (Which we are all 100% okay with, because we already like him.)

Need: He needs Russel. The statement of what he needs to learn isn’t outright said (as it will be later) but Russel represents it.

Step Two: The catalyst was when a truck knocked down Ellie’s mailbox, Carl hit a construction worker in the head with his cane, and for this a judge declares him a public menace and orders him to go to Shady Oaks Retirement Village. The DESIRE is this moment.

Carl escapes in a flying house, thousands of balloons lifting him skyward. He even says the desire of the whole story out loud, “So long boys! I’ll send you a postcard from Paradise Falls!” The tangible goal is “live out the rest of his days in his and Ellie’s house, on the edge of Paradise Falls, South America.” (“It’s like America … but South.”)

Step Three: The plan and the conflict overlap, as they are wont to do. We have a scene where Carl is unfurling sails, setting a compass, and settling back in his chair for a smooth journey. But later on, after some conflict has arrived, we have Russel figuring out how to actually make it there. And after even more conflict has arrived, we have him telling Russel “We’re going to walk to the falls quickly and quietly, with no rap music or flash-dancing.”

Step Four: The moment he settles back into his armchair, high above the city, and here’s a knock on the front door, nothing is going to be easy for Carl. First, we have opposition in the form of Russel. Then we have a storm. Then the house lands miles away from the Falls, so they’ll have to walk it. Then we have Kevin, the giant bird. Then we have Dug. Which means they’re also being chased by a legion of talking dogs. Which brings us to Muntz, the main villain, and Carl’s shadow – the representation of Carl’s flaws, and the consequences of refusing to let go of the past.

Step Five: This is the trek to the Falls. It’s also the battle with every complication that arises. And it’s also exactly what Carl is not suited to do. He’s a curmudgeonly old guy, bent on living out the rest of his life alone. Well, the story says “Nope, Carl, that’s not how it’s going to be” and promptly gives him a surrogate grandson to take care of, a dog who adores him, and even a giant mythical bird. And he has to lead them all, if he’s going to get to the Falls.

Step Six: The moment when Russel invades Carl’s heart. Which is what he needs, but he doesn’t understand. (I have the scene beated out in the previous post.)

Step Seven: Finally, he gives in to the worst of himself and chooses his goal of living in his broken house on the edge of Paradise Falls. But somehow this doesn’t feel like victory. He’s still alone, next to Ellie’s empty chair, and she is still beyond his reach.

He picks up her adventure book, and leafs through the photographs, missing her; he pauses on the page scrawled with the words “Stuff I’m Going To Do”, lets his hand rest on it, grief and regret overwhelming him. He begins to close the book, and the page shifts … revealing the edge of another picture. Surprised, he turns the page. It’s their wedding picture.

Ellie added picture after picture of their happy marriage, the whole wonderful life they shared, all the things she did. And on the bottom of the last page is her last message to him: “Thanks for the adventure! Now go have a new one! Love, Ellie.” Exactly what Carl needs. He doesn’t need to be guilty, he doesn’t need to regret the past. The past was beautiful, and she will never truly leave him.

Choice: So, Carl can make the choice to throw everything out of the house to go save Russel.

New Life: Sitting on a curb, eating ice cream with Russel.

In the credits, we see a whole new life – or new adventure – with Carl, Russel, Dug, and even a bunch of new puppies.

So, it’s actually pretty simple. And once again, it’s fun to develop your own stories like this, but it’s surprisingly fun to analyze movies and books with it too. It improves your storytelling ability, I’ve found. Practice makes perfect.

I hope this post helps somebody out. It’ll make the ten times I cried while writing it, while watching scenes from Up, worth it.

Beanies and Negotiations

A/N: this is my first imagine, feedback is greatly appreciated!

Veronica and Betty sat in a booth at Pop’s, each girl sipping on her own milkshake.  They smiled and laughed as they chatted about random topics, the subject ranging from schoolwork to their friends.  After their giggles died down from joking about Kevin’s antics, the conversation landed on the topic of (Y/N) and Jughead.

“So (Y/N) and Jughead have been friends forever, like you and Archie, right?” Veronica asked.

“Yeah, they’ve been best friends for as long as any of us could remember,” Betty said, smiling.  “They used to chase each other around everywhere. It was so cute.  I remember this one time, we were in first grade and the four of us were playing in Archie’s backyard.  Suddenly, Jughead got down on one knee, took off his beanie, and proposed to (Y/N).”

“No!” Veronica gasped, covering a smile.

“Yes!” Betty giggled. “Archie and I were so shocked, but (Y/N) just smiled and put on the beanie.  She told him, ‘We’re much too young to get married, Juggie.  Ask me again when we’re eighteen and I’ll say yes.’” Veronica laughed and Betty soon joined her.  Once their laughter subsided, Veronica’s wandering eyes found Jughead sitting a few booths away, typing away on his computer.

“Speak of the devil,” she smirked, pointing at him as Betty turned around to look.  He sat by himself, ignorant to the world as he wrote his story.

“I’m surprised (Y/N)’s not with him,” Betty commented as she turned back to face Veronica.  She shrugged.

“I bet you she’ll walk in within the next ten minutes.”

Sure enough, a few minutes later (Y/N) entered the Chock’lit Shoppe.  She stood by the entrance for a minute, her eyes scanning the diner. Finally, she spotted Jughead and walked over to the booth.  Sliding into the same seat as Jughead, she rested her chin on his shoulder.  Betty and Veronica watched as her mouth moved, but they couldn’t hear what she was saying.

“Ugh, I can’t hear them!” Veronica moaned.  Betty nodded.

“Me too.  Maybe we could move a bit closer?” she suggested. “But be subtle about it.”  The girls slowly picked up their milkshake glasses and shifted down a few booths, so now they were within earshot of Jughead and (Y/N). Neither of them seemed to notice.

“It’s very well-written,” (Y/N) commented, her eyes scanning Jughead’s laptop screen.  “Very eloquent and ominous.”  The corners of Jughead’s lips curved upwards, but he didn’t take his eyes off the screen.

“Thanks,” he replied, continuing to type.  Betty and Veronica continued to observe their interactions, watching as Jughead continuously stole (Y/N)’s fries, to which she would reciprocate with a slap on his arm. At one point Jughead became so invested in his story that he completely zoned out, unable to hear (Y/N).

“Juggie,” she pestered him, lightly poking his arm.  “Come on, Jughead.  Earth to Juggie?”  He remained stoic as (Y/N) sighed, leaning back in the seat.  After a moment of thought, she sprung up again.  She smirked as she snatched the beanie off of Jughead’s head and tugged it onto hers.  That seemed to snap him out of his trace, because immediately he slammed his laptop shut and reached out to take it back.  (Y/N) giggled and ran out from their booth, running over to Betty and Veronica.  The two girls shifted so it would appear that they weren’t eavesdropping on their conversation.

“Quick, move,” (Y/N) urged as she squeezed past Betty into the booth.  Jughead slowly approached their table, his eyes never shifting from (Y/N).

“Give it back,” he demanded as he stood right in front of the table.  Betty and Veronica bit their lips in an attempt to keep their giggles at bay.  (Y/N) shook her head.

“Not unless you let me wear it tomorrow,” she bargained.  Jughead scoffed and crossed his arms.

“This isn’t a negotiation,” he told her.  He leaned over to grab it off (Y/N)’s head, but she swatted his arm away.

“This is a negotiation,” she replied, smirking.  “I have something that we both want.  I’m proposing a fair deal to you.  Take it or leave it.”  Jughead released an exasperated sigh as he looked at Betty and Veronica.

“Can either of you please give that back to me?” he pleaded.  The two girls almost missed the slight upward twitch of his lips. Veronica pursed her lips, trying to hide her smile.

“Nope,” she said, popping the ‘p’.  “I think it’s a fair deal.”  Betty shrugged and nodded.

“I agree,” she stated. Jughead let out another frustrated groan and (Y/N) smirked.

“The girls have spoken, Juggie.  Do we have a deal?” she questioned.

“Fine,” Jughead agreed, rolling his eyes.  (Y/N) smirked triumphantly, jumping over the seat and out to stand next to Jughead. He grabbed the beanie off her head and placed it onto his.  A smirk began to creep onto his face.

“You didn’t make me pinky promise,” he taunted before retreating back to their table.  (Y/N) huffed in anger as she stomped back to their booth, sitting down across from Jughead with her arms crossed.  Betty and Veronica broke down into hysterical laughter.

“Oh my god!” Veronica laughed.  “They’re like an old married couple!”

“Yeah they are,” Betty giggled.  “I still can’t believe they’re just like friends.”  They both shook their heads as they turned their attention back to (Y/N) and Jughead’s booth.  The pair had stood up, Jughead’s laptop tucked under his arm, and they exited the diner.

The next day at school, Betty and Veronica gave (Y/N) confused stares as she roamed the hallways sporting Jughead’s signature grey beanie.

“That cannot be Jughead’s,” Veronica denied, shutting her locker.  “I mean, there’s no way Jughead would actually give his beanie to her. He never takes that thing off.”  Betty gave her a doubtful look.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he let her wear it,” Betty replied as they began to walk to the student lounge.  “He’s completely smitten with her.”

“He’s more smitten with his hat,” Veronica joked, both girls laughing.

Their suspicions were confirmed when they spotted Jughead in the lounge, raven locks flowing freely. He wore no beanie.  (Y/N) entered a few minutes later, still wearing Jughead’s beanie.  She smirked as she walked over to him.  Betty and Veronica turned to face them, not-so-subtly attempting to eavesdrop on their conversation.

“Can I please have it back?” they heard Jughead whine.  (Y/N) grinned and shook her head, putting her hands over the beanie in case Jughead tried to snatch it off her head.

“No.”

“I feel like an idiot without it on,” he complained.  “Everyone’s giving me weird looks.  And normally I don’t mind that, but I’m feeling quite vulnerable and exposed without my beanie.”

“A deal’s a deal, Juggie,” (Y/N) sing-songed, walking over to sit next to Betty on the couch. Jughead muttered under his breath and shook his head, but he followed (Y/N) and leaned against the armrest of the couch. The four friends chatted and laughed together, and Betty and Veronica couldn’t help but notice Jughead’s frequent glances at (Y/N) and the wide smile that never left his face.

“Reading anything good?” Dean asks.

Sam’s inside the gas station, picking up some snacks instead of listening to this conversation, so your face doesn’t feel the need to flush with embarrassment. Dean already knows exactly what you’re reading.

“I guess,” you tell him. No need to feed his ego by telling him how hot the story is.

“What is it?”

PART TWO

Klaus was a good friend to your parents for years and years. When they died, you were just 12 years old. There was no one else to look after you, so Klaus took you in like the child he never had.

It has been 9 years that he’s been taking care of you and those 9 years hasn’t been easy. You were constantly moving from place to place, unable to call any place your home. Until finally, Klaus settled into a small town called ‘Mystic Falls’. Klaus did run into a few problems here and there with the Salvatore brothers, but he always kept you out of it. The last thing he wants is to see you hurt. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself.

Soon, he had a mansion built for you and his family to live in. You finally got to meet Rebekah and Elijah, who were nothing but kind to you, but you were wondering when you would ever meet Finn and Kol. Eventually, Rebekah ended up getting daggered again which did upset you because she was like a sister to you.

You never understood why Klaus had a thing for daggering his siblings. The last time you brought up that subject, he said that it’s complicated and to not ask again. And so you obeyed.

Right now, Klaus & Elijah are having dinner with the Salvatore brothers about this whole ‘Elena’ situation with Klaus’s hybrids. Of course, since Klaus wants to keep you out of his mess, he advised you to stay in your room and not get involved, no matter what kind of ruckus you hear.

You’re currently in your room, sitting comfortably under the covers on your bed reading a book. The walls weren’t so thick because you can hear mumbles of all of the men exchanging words. It made you feel better knowing that no one is fighting and no one is getting hurt.

Minutes go by and you could’ve sworn you heard Rebekah’s voice. You closed your book, setting it on the bed and slowly got out of bed, walking towards your door while you tried listening in more. And that’s when you also noticed some unfamiliar male voices and Klaus yelling in pain.

You know that Klaus doesn’t want you involved but you couldn’t help but rush to him in aid. You care for him so much that you’re even willing to let him feed on you a little if he really needed it. He took care of you and you saw it as your obligation to return the favor.

Reaching the bottom of the stairs, his screams stop and you hear Elijah calmly say, “this is family business.”

Entering the dining room where everyone is, the first thing you see is Klaus leaning over the table, waiting for the pain to pass.

“Family business? What family business?! What’s going on?!” You shouted.

Everyone turns around to look at you. You noticed that Stefan and Damon were gone and you see two men. They looked familiar but you couldn’t quite put your finger on it.

“Y/N please. Just go back to your room.” Klaus begged.

“No seriously, what are you guys doing to Nik. And who the hell are you two?” You scoffed at the two men.

Before they could get a word in, Elijah spoke. “My dear Y/N. This is Kol and Finn.” Elijah pointed at each one individually as he named them.

Your jaw dropped. You couldn’t believe it. I mean, what an awkward first way to meet them.

“Who might this be?” Finn asked.

“Yeah who the bloody hell are you? Nik’s girl?” Kol added, putting his hands on his hips. You glared at Kol’s remark, you never thought of Klaus in a romantic way. You always saw him as your guardian, your protector.

Elijah walked over to you. “It’s quite a long story. I assure you, I’ll explain it all to you later.” He put one hand on your back and the other leading to the stairs. “Come.”

Elijah took his time to tell you everything that was going on while Klaus and the rest of the siblings handled their issues. Eventually you understood that this family is flat out dysfunctional, but you wouldn’t have it any other way. You all even came to find out that their mother, Esther was alive as well. How odd.

Over this short amount of time, you didn’t exactly see Kol as a brother like you do, Elijah. You weirdly found him attractive, actually. You didn’t know if it was his looks or his wittiness, even though he is the wreck less Mikaelson sibling. Not knowing if he felt the same or not, you just kept it to yourself.

Today is the Mikaelson Ball. Klaus was kind enough to lend you his credit card to buy yourself the proper attire for tonight. Rebekah even went with you to shop and even helped herself to her brother’s credit card as well.

Finally, after trying on over 10 dresses, you’ve found the perfect one. It was a backless sequin mermaid floor length dress. The best part is that it hugged your body perfectly.

And of course, since Klaus loves spoiling you, he also hired someone to style your hair and work on your makeup in your bedroom. You were just enjoying being pampered.

You were finished getting ready before any of the guests arrived, so you walked downstairs anyways to await their arrival. Walking downstairs, sliding your fingers on the railing, you saw the hired butlers getting champagne glasses filled. You even saw Kol helping himself to a glass. You tried your best to make sure you didn’t step on your dress as you were taking each step, by holding it up a few inches. With three steps left until you’ve reached the flat ground, there was Kol with his hand reaching out to you.

At first, Kol only saw you as a mere roommate. But once he saw how stunning you looked in this very moment, it changed his entire perspective of you. He thought to himself how absolutely stunning you looked. His lips parted and he couldn’t take his eyes off of you. Now he felt like he just had to have you, even if he had to go through his brother Niklaus.

“I assumed you were in need of some assistance, Y/N.” Kol said to you.

You chuckled, grabbing onto his hand once you got closer. “Yeah I was struggling for a minute.” You let go of his hand once you reached the floor.

“So who might your escort be tonight?” Kol asked, then took a sip of his champagne, keeping his eyes on you, awaiting your answer.

“No one actually. Because no matter who it is, he’ll never be good enough for Klaus.”

“To hell with that bloody wanker.”

“Kol stop-” You shook your head, stifling a laugh.

“I’m only joking.” Kol put his hands up in defense. “See here, darling, I happen to not have a date as well. So do you mind?” He smiled at you.

“What?” You were shocked. Quickly, you snapped yourself out of it. “I mean, really?” Kol Mikaelson wants you as his date for the ball? This can’t be happening. You must be dreaming.

“You best hurry before I change my mind, Y/N.” He joked.

“Yes. Yes, I’ll be your…um…date?” You didn’t know to question it or word it as a statement because you just couldn’t believe it.

Kol grabbed your right hand, saying, “Marvelous.” Then he slowly planted a kiss on the back of your hand. Your cheeks blushed red as you heard footsteps approach down the hall.

It was Niklaus that was here to ruin the moment. Oh no. “What is this?” He asked, not looking too happy at all.

You just froze, surprisingly being able to get a word out. “Klaus, we-”

“Y/N is letting me escort her to the ball. Perhaps you don’t mind.” Kol smirked, confidently walking towards the original hybrid.

Klaus had his hands behind his back, clenching his jaw, then revealed his crooked smile. He didn’t want to cause a scene today. “Hm… I thought you would at least choose a man that is more suitable for you.” He looked at you, then put one arm out straight to point at Kol.

Kol just glared at his older brother.

“Well according to you, no man is suitable for me. And technically, you could’ve taken Kol’s place, you know. But you’re too infatuated with that bitch, Caroline.” You spat. You’ve never liked Caroline for Klaus. She was always so rude to him, yet he was head over heels for her.

“Y/N, do not start with me.” Klaus growled. You know that your remark about Caroline would bother him and you didn’t care because he was being a hypocrite.

“Don’t judge me on my date and I won’t judge you on yours.” You crossed your arms in front of your chest, wearing a straight face.

Klaus fell silent. He narrowed his eyes at you, then gave Kol the death stare and stormed to another room in the house to let off some steam.

“Well then, this night is off to a fantastic start.” Kol joked, in an attempt to ease the tension.

“I mean, am I right or am I right?”

Kol nodded his head in agreement, then grabbed a glass of champagne for you to cheers with him.

Finally the guests started arriving. Every few minutes, more and more arrived. And almost all of them were wowed by how ginormous the mansion is and the choice of decor for the occasion.

You stayed by Kol’s side while the both of you playfully voiced your opinions to each other about each guest that walked in. One of the things you do enjoy about Kol is that he doesn’t take everything seriously. He’s someone you can have fun with.

“Kol! Look Look!” You tapped him on the arm with your hand to look forward to get his attention because he got carried away on his smart phone. He was still getting the hang of using that device.

“Oooo who is it now?” He asked excitedly, putting his phone in his pocket.

“That’s that slut Elena and her Salvatore brothers. Klaus has told me all about her.” You said disgustingly.

“I bet they have threesomes. How fun.” Kol said, raising his brows up.

You gagged, almost choking on your champagne.

“You alright there, darling?” Kol laughed, patting you on the back.

“Thank you. Thank you for that comment. I almost just died because of you.”

(Later…)

After sharing laughs and even more champagne, you decided to excuse yourself to the ladies room. “I’ll be back, Kol.”

“No matter.” Kol replied.

“Do you mind?” You asked, handing him your champagne glass to hold onto until you come back. He responded with a nod, then you went on your way.

Coming back from the loo, you didn’t see Kol in his original spot, you figured he’d be back, so you just hung around waiting for him to return. You observed all of the guests having a great time and even spotted Klaus with Caroline. He was just so mesmerized by her. Gross.

What you didn’t notice is that every now and then throughout the night, Klaus would look around to check up on you, making sure you’re not getting into any trouble with Kol. He despised that the one person you happened to allow to escort you is Kol. He knows the ins and outs of his little brother and doesn’t think his intentions for you are good.

“I see your escort is not by your side.” You hear from behind you, so you turn around to see that it’s Elijah, the oh so noble steed.

“Oh yeah. He’s probably grabbing a bite, if you know what I mean.” Blood from a human’s neck is exactly what you meant.

“Certainly. And might I add, I’ve noticed that the two of you have become quite friendly this evening.”

“I mean, if you say so Elijah.” You shrugged your shoulders at Elijah’s opinion. You wondered why it concerns him because Elijah is the least judgmental out of all of his brothers. Maybe he’s just making small talk? Who knows.

“Well, I-” Before Elijah could get a sentence out, Kol pops up and disrupts.

“Ah there you are, Y/N. Am I interrupting?” Kol said half-aloud with that accent of his that you just die for. Instead of finishing his sentence, Elijah just ended up excusing himself.

Not a moment too soon, you see Elijah making himself known at the top of stairs. “If anyone could gather, please.”

You and Kol were the first ones at the stairs. Elijah waited until the rest of his siblings followed.

As you were minding your business watching everyone gather, out of nowhere Kol decides to snake his arm around your waist. It made your heart skip a beat and you surely hoped Kol didn’t hear it. You didn’t want him to know that he makes you nervous.

As Klaus was excusing himself from being by Caroline’s side, he did see Kol getting too touchy for his own comfort. It did infuriate him, making him tempted to snap Kol’s neck right there on the spot. But, Klaus, and all the rest of his siblings, know how important this ball if to their mother, Esther. So, Klaus chose to let this one go.

You turned your head while your eyes were scanning around the room and the moment you saw Klaus, you quickly moved Kol’s arm away from your waist.

Once Klaus and Rebekah finally made their way to join the three of you at the top of the stairs, Elijah made his speech inviting all of the guests to join in on The Waltz.

The guests followed to the ballroom, but you just stood in your spot, being left alone at the stairs. “Shit.” You said to yourself.

(Meanwhile…)

“You best mind your manners when it comes to Y/N. Do you comprehend?” Klaus growled at Kol as they were walking down the stairs.

“Don’t worry Nik, she’s safe with me.” Kol smiled and gave a wink.

Klaus wasn’t amused with his brother whatsoever, so he shot him a glare and stormed off to find Caroline.

Kol looked left and right after finally noticing that you’re nowhere near him. He looked behind him at the stairs and saw that you have a lost look on his face, so he rushed over to you.

“What’s the matter?” Kol asked, concerned that it was something serious.

“Um. This is embarrassing, but I don’t know how to Waltz or whatever. Nobody ever taught me.”

“Not to fret, darling. It’s easy. Just follow my lead.” Kol assured you, then picked up your hand, leaving a kiss on your knuckles. Of course, you blushed bright red at his gesture.

The night ended amazingly. When the night was coming to an end, you and all of The Mikaelsons stood around to thank every guest for coming.

After all of the guests were finally gone, Klaus disappeared to his room to do god knows what. That’s when Kol decided to take advantage of the opportunity. You were about to leave to walk to your room, but Kol stopped you by lightly grabbing your wrist.

“Yes?” You were puzzled.

“I don’t mean to be a too much of a bother, but how about we pretend?” Kol flashed a grin.

“Pretend? Pretend what?” You chuckled at his suggestion. The word ‘pretend’ just brings you back to your childhood when you would use your wild imagination to ‘play pretend’.

“Seeing as we live under the same roof, allow me to walk you…to your bedroom.”

“This is really corny but okay.” As cheesy as you think this is, you can’t blame Kol because he was out of the loop for a hundred years. But, this gesture of his did make you feel some type of way.

Reaching your bedroom, the two of you were face to face under your door frame. “Have a lovely evening, Miss Y/L/N.” Instead of Kol kissing the back of your hand per usual, he left a gentle kiss on your forehead, then left elsewhere in the mansion.

This night ended up being better than you’ve ever anticipated.

anonymous asked:

Do you know any drarry fics that take place during their Hogwarts years?

I sure do! 90% of Drary fanfics that I read take place during the Hogwarts-era because I think they’re the absolute best! #Hogwartsismyhome

Be sure to check out my 8th year rec list and 5th year rec list as well!

  • I Choose Him - by aboutmalfoy (45k)
Draco Malfoy attempts, rather suddenly, to take action regarding his long-standing crush on Potter, after which fourth year transpires quite a bit differently.
(Draco asks Harry to the Yule Ball; their relationship develops from there)

  • In Between - by winterstorrm (33k)
The Dark Lord gives Draco an impossible mission: befriend Harry Potter or face the consequences.
(This story needs some more loving! In this au, Muggle Studies is a compulsory subject and, for their newest assignment,  Harry and Draco are paired together. They have to make a list of muggle activities and each week of the term, they’re going to have to do one of them. Loved how Draco and Harry’s relationship progresses throughout the fic. And Draco is slowly realising that he might fail the mission Voldemort gave him)

  • Love Comes Tumbling - by taradiane (22k)
‘Harry’s thoughts were of how much he would have done differently with Malfoy over the years, and of Dumbledore’s final words to the other boy … “It is my mercy, and not yours, that matters now.” Maybe, Harry wondered, he could find some mercy, too, and give Malfoy the second chance that Dumbledore had believed him worthy of.’
(This was oh so very realistic and I flailed around so much while reading this story! There’s a lot of fluff, a bit of drama, and a sprinkle of angst. And omg the relationship between our two boys is just so soft and sweet - a truly lovely read!)

  • Doer of Good Deeds - by Lomonaaeren (6k)
Ron certainly knows how to recognize obsession when he sees it, thanks to feeling some of the same with Hermione. And he would rather that Harry’s obsession with Draco Malfoy end sooner rather than later. Otherwise, Ron’s afraid that he’s going to spend the rest of his life hearing about how ugly all of Malfoy’s girlfriends are.
(I feel like Ron doesn’t get enough love in the HP fandom, but this fic really put him in the spotlight which I loved! Ron plays matchmaker in this story when Harry’s obsession with Draco is at an all time high)

  • The Bet - by firethesound (6k)
Harry really should know better than to make any sort of bet with a Slytherin.
(Harry and Draco place a bet on the upcoming Quidditch game between their two teams where the loser has to do anything (and I mean ANYTHING) the winner wishes. Harry loses, but maybe in the long run he doesn’t mind all that much ;))

  • A Good Bet - by the_flic (11k)
Since returning to Hogwarts Draco has been acting well… NICE! Harry is suspicious, Hermione thinks they should maybe give him a break, Ron still hates the git. Harry investigates. What IS up with Draco?
(A super fun story where Draco is acting suspiciously nice to Harry)

  • Good Faith - by Meri (22k)
Draco Malfoy will use what ever means available to get what he wants. And he wants Harry Potter.
(A new marriage law created by the Ministry states that all students raised by Muggles must marry someone who was raised by Wizards/Witches in order to unite Wizarding society)

  • Underneath the Underneath - by dirty_darella (23k)
Hogwarts has never been boring for Harry Potter, and sixth year is shaping up to be no different. A mystery, a (slightly uncomfortable) budding romance between old friends, and a botched up Potions accident. It might be more bearable if only Malfoy wasn’t such a pain.
(Draco is a smarmy little git, but you’ll love him even more for it. The plot in this fic is so intriguing, and Ron and Hermione are simply perfect in this story!)

  • Cure for the Flu - by Ivyblossom (10k)
Harry, Draco, sickness, and accidental telepathy.
(Hilarious, fluffy and outrageously cute! What more do you need in a fic?)

  • Lustre - by Calico & julad (24k)
He is, he tells himself, fine now. (In which Lucius sends Draco a very important birthday present, which he’ll need Harry’s help to keep in one piece.)
(Draco receives a snake from his father and names her Pomegranate and the fic is made 100x better when Harry starts speaking Parseltongue to it!)

  • Cactus Angels - by lucilla_darkate (48k)
Harry and Draco face off at breakfast. Weirdness and sex are not far behind. Draco likes to hurt him and Harry likes to be hurt. It’s a win/win situation.
(This fic is so very hot and sexy with BDSM (no sex chambers or non-con here - the author manages to keep it pretty tame for a BDSM story))

  • Then Comes a Mist and a Weeping Rain - by Faithwood (21k)
It always rains for Draco Malfoy. Metaphorically. And literally. Ever since he had accidentally Conjured a cloud. A cloud that’s ever so cross.
(Kisses from Harry seem to be the solution for Draco when a mysterious little rain cloud keeps following him around, leaving him miserable, angry and drenched in water. A beautiful, heart-warming fic that’ll leave you smiling!)

  • Chase the Wind - by Saras_Girl (10k)
Draco is up to something, Harry has no filters, and Hermione knows everything. AU Hogwarts fluff with no excuses.
(Saras_Girl has got to be one of my favourite Drarry authors. I mean, she can honestly do no wrong at all in her stories! This fic is pure fluff galore!)

  • Hey, Potter - by SunseticMonster (16k)
Harry returns to Hogwarts for his 8th year, determined not to let Malfoy get to him. But when the snarky teasing starts up again, Harry finds that returning the jibes with compliments has a far more interesting outcome.
(A captivating story where Draco insults Harry (of course), but then Harry retaliates by saying something nice back. The sexual tension is so thick in this story!)

  • Marginal Notes - by blamebrampton (9k)
When you’re 18, and nothing is as it was meant to be, sometimes it can be hard to let the right people know what you are thinking.
(Draco is such a cutie in this story! He tries to start afresh and create a new slate for his image, so he begins to slip helpful notes of advice to his fellow peers and teachers)

  • Good Company - by Greenflares (8k)
With Hermione and Ron always together, Harry’s return to Hogwarts to complete his education isn’t exactly fun. Somehow, it’s his unlikely friendship with Malfoy that keeps him sane.
(The characterisations in this fic were wonderful! If you’re in need of some feel-good stories or just having a bad day, then this is the fic for you!)

  • For Every Action - by bobbirose (9k)
When Harry wins a second bottle of Felix Felicis from Dean Thomas, he is instructed to take it the very next morning.
What happens then, and how it basically all comes down to Draco Malfoy, is up to the laws of the universe.
(Gah, this was too adorable! The amount of fluff in this story made me squeal so much and I had the biggest grin on my face while reading it!)

Extra

  • Twist of Fate - by Oakstone730 (302k)
Draco asks Harry to help him beat the Imperius curse during 4th year. The lessons turn into more than either expected. A story of redemption and forgiveness.
(One of my all-time favourite Drarry fic which spans over a period of 8 years from 4th year to 4 years after DH)

Ever since you began dating Shawn, Aaliyah had automatically taken a liking to you.

She was excited for there to be another girl around, besides her mother or her best friends. Aaliyah looked up to you as a big sister, almost - always asking you for advice.

Whether it be about clothes; school; friends; sports; boys - Aaliyah always wanted to talk to you about something. It actually got to the point where Shawn had accused you of stealing his sister, jokingly, of course.

Lately, though, there was one topic that girl could not stop talking about: boys.

According to her, his name was Ben and he was the most perfect thing to walk the earth. Aaliyah’s words - not yours.

A Series of Unfortunate Events (For me): Part 2

Recap: I, an aasimar Ranger, got turned into a squirrel, blinded, and hit in the face with a hammer.

Eventually, the party makes it to the queen ant, and proceed to kill it. As we now have the whole nest to deal with, we must make our escape. The bloodrager and I get seperated from the rest of the party, and take another path. We hitch a ride on Lenard, who is now the pet of B.R.

Dm: Okay, you see light ahead of you, and an odd clear stone.

Me: Okay, i’m going to roll appraisal, and probably get a nat one or something… *rolls exactly what i just said*… omfg…

Dm: Its a rock.

(Prologue: We find a shiny black rock and think it is a diamond. Funny story for a later date)

After our grand escape, we head off. The bloodrager somehow gets some jungle animals (panthers or something) to leave us alone. This irritated the dm, who intended that to be an encounter. We make camp, and B.R. has first watch.

Dm: Okay, roll perception.

B.R.: *Rolls high* okay…?

DM: Guess what?

*everyone* Oh no…

DM: Scythe tree!

*after a large amount of fighting, most of us low health, i cut of a branch of the tree, pissing it off.*

Dm: okay, i’m going to roll to hit *rolls high*, and roll for damage, *another high roll*… okay, Ranger, you take 26 damage.

Me:… I just got one shot… by a god damn tree!!

*the tree then dies after i got 1 shot.

TL;DR: My ranger had the worst day of his life. He got turned into a squirrel, blinded, hit in the face with a hammer, thought a diamond was a rock, and one shot by a tree.

So, my wife and I were having a discussion about the wonderful creation of Pam the HR lady by the fandom and this kind of happened…

Pam walks into the break room at Quantico and looks for the coffee machine; she was going to need a hit of caffeine if she was going to make it through the early morning start. She hadn’t been to Quantico since her original induction, but with the DEO becoming known to other agencies, she was now required to attend the yearly inter-bureau briefing. She nods at a few of the other people present as she fills a mug and inhales deeply.

The caffeine hits her bloodstream as they’re called through to the conference room. They all filter through and Pam takes a seat around the tables that had been arranged into an L formation.

One by one they were asked to introduce themselves and the agency they worked for and Pam feels a sense of relief at finally being able to state that she worked for the DEO, rather than her usual vague answer. What she wasn’t expecting was all the eyes watching her to go wide and a cacophony of noise to fill her ears, one question louder than all the rest;

Which of the Agent Danvers stories are true? They can’t all possibly be true.

Pam chuckles, she had a feeling once it was know she worked for the DEO, stories about a certain Alex Danvers were certain to surface.

‘They’re all true’ she replies with a shrug. She’s a pain in my arse she added in her head.

‘But…’ a young agent stutters, his eyes wide as he watches the HR manager for the FBI nod.

‘All. Of. Them’ Pam states, enjoying the look on the agents face, she was well aware of the rumours that had been going around for years about Agent Danvers and the ‘legendary’ status she had picked up among other agents.

There is silence until the same young agent pipes up again, ‘so she really did fly a spaceship to save Supergirl?’

‘Preposterous!’ an older man in a military uniform yells out. ‘I’ve head many stories about this… this Agent Danvers and refuse to believe that she piloted a spacecraft without any prior training or advance notice! The paperwork alone…’

Pam stays silent and instead reaches into her bag where she had stowed the paperwork she needed to file with the FBI today; the paperwork relating to the second time Alex Danvers had taken it upon herself to fly a spaceship.

‘The paperwork wasn’t any easier the second time around…’ Pam smiles sweetly as she places the paperwork on the table in front of her.

The room erupts once again and Pam just smiles.

The following week Pam opens up the tenth email that day requesting that she holds a HR training session at the DEO. She shakes her head and wonders if they think she doesn’t know the only reason they want to come to the DEO is to meet Agent Danvers.

Her phone rings and she picks it up, pretty sure in who is on the other end. Sure enough, Director Henshaw speaks first, ‘Pam, do you know why I’m being inundated with requests from other agencies for training sessions here?’

‘I do Director, it seems our Agent Danvers is somewhat of a legend at Quantico…’

‘Ah, let me guess, they all want to meet her?’

‘Yes Sir, I’m sorry, I’ll sort this out.’

Pam hangs up and emails Maura the HR Manager at the FBI;

Maura, you have to tell Agent Roberts to stop harassing my Director! Just leave it with me, I’ll figure something out.

Pam decides that she can’t exactly have a ton of agents descend upon the DEO, the only other option is to send Agent Danvers on a field trip…

She shoots a quick email off to Alex explaining that she is required to go to Quantico to pass their training in order to keep her fake FBI badge, now that the DEO is a known organisation to them.

A month later Agent Danvers strides into the training facility with Pam at her side.

‘So I just need to pass the training?’ Alex questions.

‘Yes. To the rest of the world, you’re officially Alex Danvers, FBI. They didn’t take kindly to us faking your credentials, so have decided you need to actually obtain them…’ Pam explains, rather pleased with her cover story.

‘Understood. But that doesn’t explain why you’re here?’

‘To make sure the paperwork between the FBI and the DEO match up…’ Pam replies vaguely. In truth, she couldn’t wait to see how the other Agents reacted to Agent Danvers.

Pam spotted the young agent, Agent Li, from the briefing and smiled. Agent Rogers was also waiting in the training room, bouncing happily from foot to foot in excitement. Alex nodded towards them before entering the changing room to get ready.

The first few physical challenges, Alex passes with ease; simulations of various situations, requiring her to act quickly, shooting targets to avoid danger. As she exits the room, Agent Rogers looks like he’s about to pass out with excitement; she had set a new high score on her first attempt. Pam is filled with pride.

Next is the sparring match, in which new recruits are usually paired against each other. A dark haired woman steps forwards, her hand outstretched, ‘Agent Rizzoli’ she introduces herself, ‘we thought it was a bit unfair to pair you with a rookie…’ Alex laughs as she shakes Agent Rizzoli’s hand.

The pair are evenly matched and soon a small crowd has amassed to watch; money is quickly changing hands as various bets are made. Finally, Alex manages to pin Agent Rizzoli, winning the match. She stands and offers her hand to help the other agent up.

Finally, Alex is taken to the shooting range; by now there are roughly fifty other people crammed into the tiny side room to watch. To no one’s surprise, Alex gets a perfect score in the first round. Deciding she wants to show off a little and also because she’s a tiny bit pissed at being made to jump through all these hoops, she reaches down to her leg to pull out her favourite gun, the one she knew she probably shouldn’t have brought, but there was no way she was leaving her baby at home where Maggie could claim it.

Pam is out of the door and on the shooting range in a flash.

Alex barely has it raised to eye level before she hears a voice behind her.

‘Put it DOWN Agent Danvers’ Pam booms.

Damn it Alex thinks, before lowering it sheepishly.

‘You were under strict instructions not to bring your gun!’

‘But!’ Alex pouts.

‘No buts Agent Danvers… Give it here’ Pam holds out her hand, ‘you can have it back when we return to the DEO.’

Everyone’s jaws drop as they watch badass Agent Danvers slink over to Pam the tiny HR woman and hand over her gun.

Pam nods and heads back into the side room, alien gun in hand, to a captive audience.

‘I think we’re done here’ she states, ‘I expect Agent Danver’s FBI paperwork to be on my desk by the end of the week.’

Rumours still fly around the various agencies about the antics of Agent Danvers, but with a new addition; the tiny woman who can make Agent Danvers relinquish her weapon, just by raising her voice… Pam becomes a legend in her own right.

Tell me more about the Paladin Training AU! What does the rest of the team think about golden boy Shiro, and how does this effect them when they form Voltron for the first time? Tell me more about the first time they decided training and dark history be damned, they're going to do this Voltron thing their way. Tell me about how the team decided THEIR Shiro, (not the Shiro conditioned by training, quiet and submissive before the command, but the Shiro who rebels and protects) is the one they 1/2

2/2 will follow till the end of days. Tell me how these strangers became the team that will save the universe.

(So I originally wrote this from Lance’s POV in tumblr and then lost all of it when my computer suddenly reset.  This version ended up better anyway.  It doesn’t answer a lot of your questions, but they also weren’t strangers in this AU.  They were raised together.  But here’s that story anyway.

Based on this original post)

The short of it was: nothing was the same since Zarkon betrayed them.

The short of it was: Hunk wished things could go back to how they’d been.

Those first few days right after had been terrifying.  The panic, the yelling, the strained atmosphere.  Hunk had wanted to stay in his room for it, but he wasn’t allowed to, and even if he was, Lance would have dragged him out.  For the longest time, they’d had no idea what anyone was talking about.  There were just clipped commands, being told to sit and wait and be good, while horrifying words like ‘rogue’ and ‘attack’ and ‘death toll’ were thrown around, just barely within hearing.

All of them had been put into one room and while they weren’t told not to leave, the implication was strong.  Immediately, Keith turned to Shiro, trying to get him to spill.  In hindsight, Hunk didn’t know why they’d all thought Shiro would know, except that he was older and he was going to be their leader someday, and he always helped with the answers to their nightly school work, so maybe he knew this too.

Shiro hadn’t.

“I’m sorry, I’m sure they’ll tell us soon,” he told them, hands up in placation, and at the time he hadn’t noticed, but when he thought back, Hunk thought Shiro looked just as scared as the rest of them.

That look only got stronger when one of their instructors burst in.  “Shiro,” he called, voice icy, and Shiro stared back, eyes wide.  Shiro always seemed so much older than them, but in that moment he’d been very young looking.  “You are to come with me.”

It wasn’t even an order.  It was a demand.  It was a threat.

“Just me?” Shiro asked, and ducked his head at the immediate glare.  “Yes, sir.”  Iverson’s hand clamped down on his upper arm, rough in a way none of them usually saw, as Paladins to be.

He was dragged away, and Shiro cast another wild look over his shoulder.  “I’ll be back soon,  Stay calm.”

Then he was gone.

The art of erasing queer subtext German translations of Sherlock Holmes

When I first came to tumblr for reading all the fantastic analysis of the Sherrlock Holmes stories and adaptations, I was quite confused. Of course I read the Holmes stories before, well, most of them, but a lot of the quotes I read here didn’t sound familiar at all. I thought, well, I must have forgotten that or didn’t read properly. That doesn’t sound like me, but I never picked up my (german) copy and looked it up. One evenening, I sat over a glass of wine with my friend and she denied the gay subtext of the Holmes stories so vigorously, that I felt like proving my point and so I took her copy and wanted to show her some of the evidence. To my suprise, i could not find it. Starting with the „Quick. Hide if you love me“ part in „the dying detective“ wich was translated to „Hide if you want me to be thankfull forever“ (Verstecken Sie sich, wenn Sie sich meines ewigen Dankes gewiss sein wollen). That made me curious and I bought a copy of the original english ACD stories.

I will now start to read along with you, in german and in english to see what had been changed and why.

First, we have to note, that the most common german translation is the one by Adolf Gleiner, Margarete Jacobi, Louis Ottmann and Rudolf Lautenbach. It is an early translation (the first in some stories) and is used until today. I had a look at five different copys of the translated canon, modern ones and old ones, but they all had that translation. There is one other common translation by Gisbert Haefs, but I don’t have it, so I can’t say anything about that. Maybe someone has read those.

Then we have to note some general problems with translating from english to german, wich is not only true for Holmes but also for many other stories. There is, for example the „Sie“ and „Du“ problem. „Sie“ is the formal, polite way of saying „You“ wich one would use to adress strangers or respected people or people you don’t now well, „Du“ is the more intimate way of saying „You“ which one would use if you are adressing friends or family or people of your own age if you are younger than 25. Of course, it is always hard to get the point in a movie, book or series when people stop to use „Sie“ and start using „Du“, for it requires a permission or invitation in the spirit of: „Please, you can say „Du““ which is a big deal. In the Holmes stories, Watson and Holmes always talk to each other using „Sie“ and it is hard to create this natural intimacy between two people who do that. In translated english stories, it became quite normal that two people use „Sie“ even when they know each other quite well, especially in stories written before the 1950s. Even children adress their parents as „Sie“. Maybe it was just a way of showing how posh the English are.

Then we have the trouble of words with a slightly different meaning in both languages. But we will see that when I point out some examples.

When I read through the first three stories (TheGloria Scott, The Musgrave Ritual and The Spraceled Band) I recognized some parts that were translated pretty wrong and had to come to the conclusion, that it was done on purpose. By the third story I knew which part would have been changed before I even looked at the translation.

Examples:

The Musgrave Ritual:

The „certain quiet primness of dress“ that a lot of people refere to by pointing out a queer reading of the canon was changed to „In his appearance he showed a certain accuracy and punktuality“ which is not the same and they could have used many german expressions wich would have been closer two the point. (German: Was sein Auftreten betraf trug er eine gewisse Genauigkeit und Pünktlichkeit zur Schau). But I see, that it is not easy to catch that exact meaning for the word „quiet“ is not really used in german in that manor.

Holmes „mischivious eyes“ were changed to „smart smile“.

„He (Musgrave) was a dandy“ was changed to „He emphasised his suit“. Wich is understandable because the term „dandy“ hadn’t been used in Germany.

Fun fact: The term „woman“ refering to Rachel Howells was changed to „Weib“ (a deprecative term for woman) or to „Mädchen“ (girl) on various occations.

The Gloria Scott

In this story, Holmes speaks to Victor Trevor using „Du“. That might be because of their age.

Then they left out were Holmes was going the day the dog bit him, („I went down to chapel“).

„before the end of the term we were close friends“ was changed to „before I recovered, we had formed a friendship“ (German: Ehe ich wieder auf den Beinen war, hatten wir Freundschaft geschlossen.). And there is a term for „close friends“ in german (enge Freunde). There is no reason to change that.

But these two stories aren’t the interesting part. Let’s move on to „The spraceled band“

It starts with minor changes in the description of Holmes (They changed „love of his art“ to „Love of his work“) and in the way Holkmes adresses Watson („my dear fellow“ was translated to „My dear boy“) but they mix up the boy/fellow thing in every way, all the time.

Then, when Holmes wakes up Watson, Watson accompanys Holmes down to the sitting room in the english version, while in the german translation, Watson follows Holmes to the sitting room. They could as well have translated the sentence word by word. But they didn’t.

Holmes intruduction of Watson („This is my intimite friend and associate Doctor Watson before whom you can speak as freely as before myself“) stayed the same. I wanted to point that out.

When Holmes says that „(The gun) and a toothbrush are all we need“, the translator went through some trouble because he obviously was concerened about the singular. Instead of just changing it to plural, he invented a comb, so you can read the german sentences as plural or singular. Its hard to explain… („Wenn wir Kamm und Zahnbürste mitnehmen, haben wir alles was wir brauchen“).

When Holmes and Watson go to „the Crown“, they engage „a bedroom and a sitting room“ in the original version, while in the german version, they get „two rooms“. Well, I guess that is not exactly wrong, but it is not the whole truth either.

These are not the big ones, those will come later on, when we read more stories. But you can find this sort of changes in every Holmes story, while the rest of the story (For example the Cases) are translated with a certain accuracy.

Why did they do that? Well, I think they realised how strong the subtext is and didn’t want that to come out. I don’t think they said:“Oh my god, this is so gay, let’s not write that“, I think they thought: „Well, if I translate it word by word it sounds wrong in german, to intimate. I have to look for less strong words or discriptions.“. Maybe it was because of differences in german and british culture at that time. But they clearly changed most of the parts which one could read as „to intimate for friends“.

Thanks to @handl0ck for talking to me about this and to @astudyincanon for encouraging me to write it down… and sorry for the mistakes. I am still learning.
