How old is the oldest someone can develop DID? My friend is being diagnosed at like nineteen and I'm slightly worried that the doctor might be wrong?
A person can be diagnosed with DID at any age! People who have DID have experienced childhood trauma before the age of 9 years old. But they can experience symptoms of the disorder for years without ever knowing that they have it.
Using myself as an example, the onset of my DID started at age 4, but I wasn’t officially diagnosed until I was 20 or 21 years old (I can’t remember exactly). So for all that time I had dissociation and experienced symptoms of my disorder, but had no idea I had it! Alters within a system can be very good at hiding, and people can actually switch between alters without having any idea that it’s happened. So until I started actually seeing signs of having alters, I had no clue that I had DID, and neither did doctors.
A lot of times people won’t be diagnosed until they’re much older, even though they’ve had the disorder since they were a kid. I think that this must have happened to your friend too.
I hope that answered your question!
