rehab job

Okay, hold on.  Can we just take a moment to truly appreciate this man?

Robert Downey Jr.  He’s been an actor since he was young, most of us know that, right?  But do you know how amazing this man truly is?

As in most cases, being in the mess of Hollywood and fame at a young age can mess with people.  And it did for RDJ.  He ended up using drugs because his father had the same issue.  He had alcohol and drug issues, and like most celebrities, it became a popular subject of magazines, trying to show that “a famous man’s son became a drug addict, as usual” way of thinking.  He struggled with multiple drugs and was arrested multiple times, and in the midst of it lost his wife and son.  He was sent to jail at one point but was bailed out, and again fell back down into the hands of drugs.  He was falling to rock bottom, hard.  After five years of being a mess, he finally reached out for help.  He owned up to it completely, in an interview saying that he was a mess and should give rehab a shot.  He never pinned the blame on his dad or fame or anything, he completely owned up to it whether it meant loosing his pride or not and reached out for help.  He went to rehab in hopes of putting his life back together.

In 2001 he got his first acting job after rehab.

He quickly got back on track with his career and his life entirely.  Within a few years he got back on track being his brilliant self, and in 2008 he starred in Iron Man, his first “blockbuster” film.  Now he’s here as we know him today.

This man went through hell, but you know what he did that almost everyone else is not willing to do?  He owned up to it, made the hard choice of reaching out for help, and set his life back on track.  He was extremely successful and pushed through so much to get to were he is now.  He met Susan, whom he married and had children with, making him happy once again.  He literally went from rock bottom to cloud nine.

He’s cocky, yes, but he deserves it, to be honest.  He’s a brilliant actor and we all should be proud of him.  He’s one of the few people to deal with drugs, own up to it, and overcome it, winning in the end.

So next time you look at Robert Downey Jr., realize he is not only a great actor and amazing person, but he is also a fighter who didn’t give up.  Appreciate him not only for who he is now, but what he’s done.

Robert Downey Jr. is a truly amazing man and we should all appreciate that.

Hey y'all pls cross your fingers and send me good vibes bc I’m applying for a rehab tech job and if I get it I’m gonna buy two new snakes,,,so we all win.

Mentally Disabled Cas AU

“Hello you beautiful unicorns! I’m pretty sure I’ve already told you but your blog is everything good in the world. Do you guys have any fics where Cas has some kind of mental/developmental disorder or something? Stuff like Everytown USA and that one you just recced on the baking one where he had asbergers which I loved btw. Also if it has smut I will marry you and if cas tops at any point you can totes have my soul. Love yall have an awesome day!”

Hey there @nat2tattd! Aspergers/Autistic Cas is one of my favorite tags so this ask was like a dream come true! Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be many mentally disabled Cas fics with plenty of smut or with top Cas. If I ever find any, I will put together another rec for you, but at the moment this is all I could come up with! – Admin A

I really tried to look a fic with top Cas that would fit into that, but it didn’t work out. I would’ve really wanted your soul :( You know I’m serious with this one because I used a sad face! I never use those in here. I won’t rest until I find one and then I’m coming after your soul. – Admin J

Words: 17,640 Finished

Admin’s assessment:  ★ ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: The plot of this one ain’t my favorite but because it’s written by almaasi, I have to give it a high rating. I mean I’m not doing it because she wrote it but because it was written amazingly well (like everything she writes), so even though the plot wasn’t that great the way she wrote it was still good enough to keep me interested all through the story!

Summary: Dean’s roommate is not what anyone would call ordinary. Cas is asexual, and autistic, and he frustrates other people with his unrelentingly ‘childish’ ways – but it’s different with Dean: they have an exceptional bond, something truly profound. Dean figures Cas wouldn’t respond to the idea of a crush the way most people would, so he has no intention of telling him he’s been harbouring non-platonic feelings for him for years. Then one night everything falls to pieces: Cas overhears something he wasn’t meant to hear. Things were never normal between the two of them, but now they might never be comfortable again.

Admin’s assessment:

Admin A’s notes: I’m being way too hars here but for some reason I couldn’t stand Dean here. Also I had a problem with how Cas’s aspergers was portrayed, I felt like there was way too little description of his behaviour and it was all just explained in dialogue with Dean (super awkwardly) pointing out things like: “Hey, can I ask you something?”

Castiel turned away from his computer screen to look at Dean again. “Of course you can.”

“I’ve noticed a few things since I moved in here. I know I’m organized, but you’re even more organized than I am, and you complained that my music was loud, even when I wore headphones, until I got my new pair. The smell of microwaveable popcorn and certain other foods make you sick, and dude, you really stare. A lot. Do you have Asperger’s?” Dean asked.

I mean… before this there was literally no indications about Cas’s aspergers and no written interactions between Dean and Cas, just lazy time jumps from scene to scene. Lol I’m being so horrible here because this really wasn’t as bad as I make it sound but I’ve noticed that a lot of authors do this type of thing where they get “lazy” and just jump through the plot using a lot of dialogue instead of actually describing thing with actual words. Also I hated the way Gabriel was portrayed, because although he is a prankster, I do think he would be more insightful and caring than he was in this fic. Thats all XD

Summary: Dean’s about to start medical school and he has been assigned a dorm room.

With a roommate.

As he and Sam head up to his new room he gets an ominous warning from the guy down the hall about Dean’s new roommate. It unnerves Sam, but Dean thinks the guy can’t be that bad.

Summary: To say that Castiel Novak was normal was… Well, not normal. Sam wasn’t judgemental… But then, he was so much like their dad that he couldn’t be sure. So as soon as the word “normal” slipped past his lips, he regretted it. Now Sam wanted to come over that night to meet his nice, quiet, book-nerd, normal roommate, Cas. Great.

The Songs We Long to Sing: A Pearl Forms in the Deep of This Stirring Sea.

Each week, part of my chaplaincy training is to write a reflection on how it’s going. Here’s week number fourteen. Some identities may be altered for privacy. All the writings are here.

Sometimes a patient just talks for an hour, and I say two sentences, and that’s the whole visit. The patient usually says, “Thank you so much for your wisdom and advice” — and I hardly said a word.

Maybe that’s a good thing. If I had said too much, I might have messed it up.

But more than that: some patients just want an ear to listen.

I’ve seen the same thing at the homeless ministry. I ask someone, “How are you?” — and the answer is a breathless forty-five minute life-story of financial collapse and arrests and rehab and failed job interviews, and at the end, “You’re so wise, now I’m so pumped up for life.”

From the homeless to the hospital, I see the same craving:

People want to be heard. Because we want significance. Meaning. Dignity. A voice.

Nobody wants to live in a vacuum of silent solitude. If we can tell even one stranger about what we’ve gone through: it brings value to everything we’ve gone through.

I ask a patient, “How are you?” and she tells me about her thirty-seven surgeries, every detail of every doctor’s prognosis and prescriptions and specific slices of the scalpel. Each surgery is a harrowing tale of uncertainty—"Will I wake up from this one?“—and I could only nod and sit inside the sorrow.

I ask a patient, "How are you?” and he tells me about his successful global enterprise in the Middle East and all the countries he’s visited and how he hates retirement and he’s too sick to work but he’s just healthy enough to miss working, and I could only agree with his longing.

I ask a patient, “How are you?” and she tells me, “I miss my dog, and I guess my husband,” and she tells me about her dog and all the tricks he can’t do and how she can probably train her husband to train the dog, and at the end I prayed mostly for her dog.

I ask a patient, “How are you?” and she’s so scared about an upcoming surgery, which might finally give her relief from a feeding tube so she can eat normally for the first time in five years, and she wants so badly for the surgery to work, and she describes what it’s like to live off this plastic tentacle sticking out the side of her stomach, and I could only weep with her as she fights hard not to weep.

Some patients don’t want to talk and it takes a delicate navigation through the shallow river into the stirring deep, to open a clamshell with thumbnails: but other patients suddenly bust open, because who else will ever get to hear their story? It’s important to them, and it’s important to talk about it, and talking about it brings some kind of solidifying power, like the ground is coming together underneath a precarious balance, and if it’s important to them, then it has to be important to me, too. And it is.

There was one patient who didn’t want to say anything. I tried to ask questions from various angles, using all the training I could muster, all that spiritual assessment stuff, and it just wasn’t working. He was quite the clamshell, I mean the barnacles and super glue kind.

In my mind, I was giving up and moving towards prayer, because he was listed as a Christian and it was a Hail Mary shot across full court.

I asked, “What would you like to pray about?” — and he talked about his mother, and how lonely and scared she must be at home without him, and then he started weeping like crazy and he talked about his mother’s health and her surgery and how she was visiting the hospital even though she was so sick, and his mother was his big giant important pearl inside, so we prayed for her, and he talked about her some more after that, and that’s the thing he needed someone else to hear.

It can take a long time to get there, but it’s there. We can give a voice to it.

J.S.

Monsters

Last week I retired as a caseworker. I had been with the agency for 20 years, which is a long time in the social work world. Usually caseworkers last about five years then move on to something more cheery, like fighting famine or trying to stop wars.

The truth is I could have stayed longer, but my mother is becoming more and more frail, and I want to make sure she is taken care of. I take excellent care of my mother. I could have sent her to a nursing home years ago, but she deserved to be at home, surrounded by her family. Changing sheets and managing bedsores is not my favorite thing, but she’s my mom.

The second reason I retired was my last case. I’ll admit it, it rattled me. The boy was only five years old and I could already see how the rest of his life was going to play out. He saw them too.

Caseworkers who stay are a special breed, you have to be in order to see the things we see. Child abuse is rarely pretty. The hardest thing for me to adjust to when I started though, were the monsters. To me, they always looked like spiders, but it’s probably because I was afraid of spiders as a kid, who even knows what they really look like. Not all caseworkers can see them, but you can kind of tell when they can. There is a slight recoil when they see one, even after years and years. I’m not sure, I’ve never asked anyone else about them, bad for the pension.

Sometimes I’m really thankful for the monsters. They make the case easier to navigate, and are a better indicator of whether someone can parent or not. Their size doesn’t really matter, someone one can have a giant bird eating tarantula wrapped around their wrist and their only real issue is they have a nasty meth habit, or they can have a tiny wolf spider on their neck and the bastard has the capability to kill a child. The real giveaway for the monsters is the color. A black monster, despite all the Halloween hype, means the person is generally good, but they have a drug problem, the monster is only there, feeding. It hasn’t become a part of them yet. For those parents, rehab and job training can usually make a safe home. If everything goes perfectly, the monster is starved of misery, falls off and dies like a tick.

It’s pretty rare to have an all-black monster, they are usually mottled with other colors. Green is DV, or domestic violence. The victims are usually fed on by a yellowish-green monster, like an old bruise. The abuser is usually neon green, like a jealous rage. Most often thing I see is mottled green and black, drugs and violence. It’s a sick dance, but lots of couples take it up and kids get caught in the middle.

Yellow is sex abuse, and I want to start signing the adoption papers the moment they walk through the door. The courts always take three to five years for those cases to go through and they are brutal. The worst part with those is that the kids always seem to have little yellow monsters scuttling about them, and when they are near their abuser the two monsters shoot out little webs to each other. I’ve seen it at court hearings.

Red is physical abuse…the brighter the red, the worse the abuse. I had one case where a woman came in with a garden monster on her wrist that glowed like fire just under her skin, like an eight legged wriggling lump. Eventually I found out she murdered three kids in other states and she was working on her fourth. She went to prison forever for that.

Orange is neglect, which often comes from ignorance or poverty. Those cases are tough, because sometimes there isn’t even really a monster there, just kind of an orange patch of skin. Sometimes the monster is a screwed up system that denies benefits and then takes kids when a parent can’t provide.

My last case, let’s call him David. David was a sweet kid who had already seen too much. He already knew how to lie about “falling down stairs” or “off his bike.” I don’t know why parents think anyone is going to buy that anymore, everyone knows when you fall off your damn bike the injuries are to your hands knees and ribs. No one ever gets a black eye or a hand print shaped bruise on their face from falling off their bike.

David’s parents were of course, overly concerned about their son’s injuries, fawning all over him and making a big dramatic show over it. When I asked to come in and talk to them about David, they asked to see a “fucking warrant” and slammed the door in my face. The next day I came back with my favorite officer from our local P.D., the one who always has teddy bears in his trunk for kids. When we got inside, I saw her, my sister. Of course, it wasn’t really my sister, Alesha has been gone for almost 30 years now, but this little girl, damn if she didn’t look just like her.

The girl (Molly, I found out later) had hair that was kind of stringy and greasy, plastered against her face where it wasn’t pulled back in a rubber band pony tail. She seemed like she might have had a tall frame, but her sunken features told me it had been a long time since she had a full meal. Her face was a patchwork of scabs and healing bruises. Her mother, whose monster pulsed green and red as she moved, started walking over to her and David ran in front of his sister. “It wasn’t Molly’s fault mom, it was mine, I was stupid, I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

We removed the kids immediately.

My mom came to live with me two years ago and I have been the perfect doting son. I make sure she is comfortable; she has a flat screen TV with about five thousand channels on it so she can watch Fox News 24 hours a day. I make sure her sheets are clean, and anything she wants to eat (within reason…diabetes can take a toll on the elderly) is hers. I make sure we have time to talk every day. I know she’s lonely, but most old people are. She’s the last member of my family left, and I want to make sure she lives as long as possible.

Over the next year, the kids’ lives improved dramatically. Mom and “Mom’s Boyfriend” (not Dad, we were never able to find him) were sporadic in their visits and treatment plan, but it seemed like Mom might actually be getting the message. Her monster seemed to be getting duller each time I saw her. We decided to start having visits in the community to see if she could parent her kids. I showed up at the mall to start the visit, Molly saw her mother and ran up to her. David didn’t. He started backing up, clinging to my leg. I could feel him shaking. “It’s red he whimpered, the rat is red.” Then I saw it, the monster climbing up her arm, a bright red bird eater. I looked that mother and saw her reach into her purse. Before I even knew what was happening I had her tackled on the ground, the gun sliding across the waxed floor of the mall foyer. “You bitch!” She screamed at Molly “This is all your fault! This will always be your fault!”

The adoption finalized last week, and the day afterward, I retired.

My mother and I had a good talk this evening, sometimes it almost feels like she’s lucid. She kept asking for Alesha, where is Alesha? Why hasn’t Alesha done her chores, she is so lazy. I keep having to remind her that Alesha is gone, that she killed Alesha. I remind her every day she killed her own daughter. I want her to remember. Every day.

I left the food on her table, since she didn’t really seem to want to eat. The restraint on her ankle has been rubbing and now there is a sore.

I slid the lock into place and heard the plate hit the wall. She knows the food is drugged, but eventually she’ll need to eat. When’s she out, I’ll be able to change that dressing on her ankle. It’s important to me that my mother is comfortable.. I closed my eyes and leaned against the door. I remember the last thing the kid said as I dropped him off at his new home. “Mr. Gage,” he said “you have a rat too, it’s…on your back.” I leaned down and bopped him on the nose with my finger and sighed. “I know, kid. I know.”

A+ cover with really interesting quotes:

On prison and rehab: “Job one is get out of that cave. A lot of people do get out but don’t change. So the thing is to get out and recognize the significance of that aggressive denial of your fate, come through the crucible forged into a stronger metal. Or whatever. But I don’t even know if that was my experience. It’s funny: five years ago, I would’ve made it sound like I’m conscious of my own participation in seizing the similarities. But so many things have become less certain. I swear to God. I am not my story.”

On his son Indio’s drug problems: “He’s his mother’s son and my son, and he’s come up the chasm much quicker than we did. But that’s typical in the Information Age; things get accelerated. You’re confronted with histories and predispositions and influences and feelings and unspoken traumas or needs that weren’t met, and all of a sudden you’re three miles into the woods. Can you help someone get out of those woods? Yes, you can. By not getting lost looking for them. Pick a dysfunction and it’s a family problem.”

On working for Marvel: “I’ve gone from being convinced that I am the sole integer in the approbation of a phenomenon to realizing that I was the lead in the first of a series of movies that created a chain reaction that, if everything didn’t fire the way it was supposed to, there’s no operator, no anything. And you go, O.K., life is doing something here that included me but did not require me. But, yes, that role means a lot. Marvel is kind of like this sacred brotherhood.”

I’ve told Dean to leave now, as this is my notebook and I want everything in it to come from me - or rather, from you. I know you think it’s the fifteenth of January, 2010, but it isn’t. At the time of my writing this, the date is the fourth of October, 2013. Dean Winchester is your boyfriend of a year and a half, and you no longer work at the library, and in early 2010 you were hit by a car and hospitalised. I’m sorry.

Author: noangelsinthegarrison

Rating: Explicit

Words: 68,688 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: I love it when Sam and Jess are getting married. It’s the perfect setting for Cas and Dean to get together :’D

Summary: Sam and Jess are getting married and Dean couldn’t be any happier for them. Honestly, they’re kind of disgustingly perfect for each other and Dean’s pretty damn excited about staying with them the week before the wedding. He’s Sam’s best man, of course, and he doesn’t even mind that Jess has her own best man to share in all the organisational duties. The more the merrier, right? Except Dean must have done something to epically piss off the universe because Jess’s best man just happens to be Castiel friggin’ Novak. He’s got even hotter since High School, but apparently no friendlier and if Cas wants to spend the week pretending like they’ve never met before? Fine. Two can play at that game.

Title: The Things We Lost

Author: MadWithMusic

Rating: Mature

Words: 7,212 – Finished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★

Admin J’s notes: Some more daddy!Destiel. I was really enjoying this fic from the start, but the ending felt like the author had lost her(/his) interests for the fic and it was a bit… precipitous. However, it’s daddy Destiel and I love daddy Destiel, so it was worth of reading.

Summary: Rewind one year and Dean and Cas were happily married and raising their 5 year old daughter together. Times have changed though. Now they’re recently divorced, living separately and sharing custody of Camilla. Things start swinging the other direction though when Cas takes some time to actually talk to Dean one night and finds out how in love with him Dean still is.

Title: Come Outside

Author: Metallic_Shadows

Rating: Explicit

Words: 40,364 – Unfinished

Admin’s assessment: ★ ★ ★

Admin A’s notes: Don’t let the fact that this fic is so obviously abandoned fool you. All the good stuff happens before the last published chapter… I don’t even know why the author decided to keep writing when for me the main storyline was kind of already over after Sabriel’s wedding. Anyway, this is a good story and totally worth of reading! Just remember to prepare yourself for the emotions… Not yours, but the characters :’D I swear every character in this fic have more mood swings than your average fourteen year old girl…

Summary: Castiel is afraid to leave the house. His therapist and brother help him to make friends, resulting in meeting Dean, a shy mute who might just be the only one capable of getting him to come out of his shell.
