I haven’t read this book yet but I love it already. Yes, that’s my namesake so imagine how cool it would’ve been if books like this existed when I was growing up.
This re-imaging of the classic fairytale is set in the Kingdom of Lesotho so Refilwe is high up in a mountain cave instead of a tower and she has long beautiful dreadlocks.
A big shout out to Zukiswa Wanner (who is also the founder of the Read SA campaign) and other African writers who are telling our stories and retelling the classics for the children of the continent to enjoy and identify with.
- REFILWE: An African retelling of Rapunzel by Zukiswa Wanner is available at Exclusive Books stores. I’m hoping that it’s also available in SeSotho, SePedi, SeTswana and other vernacular languages.
