anonymous asked:

do you know of any other artists/writers/poets that have a writing style similar to Alex?

I have had a lot of difficulty writing this, thanks for that. ;)

Alex has a style all his own, haha. But I do think he pulls a lot of his style from his own influences, like Nick Cave, Lou Reed, John Cooper Clarke, and Leonard Cohen. So if you go in that direction you can’t really go wrong. A lot of the bands you’ll find that AM fans like have similar… Elements? I guess? Like a big example I can think of are the Strokes. Julian Casablancas writes some incredible lyrics. Queens of the Stone Age is another one. And by this I don’t mean they have the same style, but the level of imagery or like, complexity is somewhat similar, if that makes sense. I think. I didn’t realize how remarkable Nick Cave was as a writer until I actually read through his book(s). I was kind of amazed and I can see where Alex would find that inspiring. I think all writers pull from the people that inspire them and make their own style out of it, and Alex definitely has done that.

In terms of authors, I can’t think of many that necessarily have similar styles to Alex. Probably because Alex is a song writer -  they’re very different things! But if you read an author like Tom Wolfe, who Alex likes a lot, you can see where he pulls ideas or like vernacular from and is inspired by. I loveeee that Alex reads books. (Nerd alert) You can tell he reads books by the way he pulls words together. And I love how important it is to him to do that.

Alex has kept me around for so long because of how unique he is, how much I love his lyrics and also the music he makes with AM and TLSP. I can’t even compare him/them to others, because there’s not much to compare for me. However, if you want to know my own personal favorites authors/poets/other musicians, I can definitely tell you them. But like, I don’t necessarily think they’re similar to Alex’s style so I don’t want to say that here and confuse you, haha.

If you are, like me, a pretentious motherfucker who only listens to weird obscure shit and literally lives in Lou Reed’s ass, this is the post for you!

I’ve created a list of somewhat modern and good bands, that have either been influenced by VU/Lou Reed, have similar sound qualities, or are just plain good. Because as much as I love hanging out in Lou Reed’s ass, there are some damn good other bands out there.

1. The Strokes

Ah yes, the cheeky American indie rock band from New York who are sort of ‘irrelevant’ by now, but you’re following a blog dedicated to an obscure punk rocker from the 1960′s, so I’m assuming you don’t care about relevancy. The Strokes utilize simple chords/guitar riffs, rhythmic vocals, and most of all, good lyrics. Is This It (2001) Room on Fire (2003) Are my favs - check em out, if you haven’t already.

2. The Feelies

Now, they aren’t “modern.” They formed in the late 70′s and released 4 studio albums, they were apart of that 80′s rock scene with The Cure, New Order, y’know. BUT they were in fact hugely influenced by Lou Reed, I swear to god the lead singer sounds eXACTLY like Lou Reed. It’s uncanny, really. But hey, they’re amazing. check out Crazy Rhythms (1980) Only Life (1988)

3. Les Rallizes Denudes

Talk about obscure.. I don’t even remember how I found these dudes, all I know is they sound a lot like VU. Honestly, they’re very good, very chill, and definitely worth a listen. Try the song “But I was Different’ and you’ll see what I mean

4. The Jesus and The Mary Chain

I’m not sure if they were influenced by VU or not, but they certainly have a unique sound that’s worth listening to.. Shoegaze in its finest. Try out “Psycho Candy” (1985)

5. Lastly, I will just list off bands that you will like if you like Lou Reed!

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Cure, The Ramones, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Pretenders, MGMT, Silversun Pickups, Siouxsie And The Banshees, Spoon, Smashing Pumpkins, Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Foster The People, and The Stooges.
