redskins football

You know what the Ilvermorny House names remind me of?

The Washington Redskins, that American football team with the ridiculously racist team name that they refuse to change because of it’s part of the teams “history” (and the millions it would cost to rebrand but ANYWAY).

Honestly considering the total lack of respect for and belief that Native peoples were even, you know, human for the majority of Americas history. An Irish woman founding a school in early America would probably have seen nothing wrong with plundering the sacred totems of the Native tribes to use as cute mascots for her houses.

And considering America today when people started to object and protest the schools use of the totems as mascots there would probably be a whole lot of racists dicks defending their continued use because they were part of the “important history” of Ilvremorny.

Congratulations JK, you managed to capture American institutional racism perfectly. Too bad you joined in.

Fact: Native Americans were key to the origins of football.

Specifically, a game with Pennsylvania’s Carlisle Indian Industrial School at the turn of the 20th century.

In 1905, football was incredibly violent (more than it is today). To correct that, the forward pass was invented. The first team to master it was Carlisle, led by its coach, a man named Pop Warner.

In 1907, the Carlisle team traveled to to play the University of Chicago. 27,000 people attended, many of whom chanted viciously racist slurs.

Despite the crowd, Carlisle pulled off one of the biggest upsets in history and beat Chicago — thanks to a spiral pass.

One of football’s signature tactics was popularized because of this team.

So why do we still mock Native Americans in the NFL?

Video of a Native American mother showing her children footage of sports teams with Native American mascots, including a video of fans doing the “Tomahawk Chop”. It’s called “I Am Not A Mascot”.

Short vid, but a very powerful one…

About Blackface in Cosplay

You know what, guys? blackface is blackface regardless of intent.

And you could argue that a cosplayer covering their whole body with brown/black paint/make up doesn’t mean that their intentions are racists, you could argue that person is innocent.

But regardless, when it comes to subjects such as blackface, an issue that is so controversial, your intent could be the most innocent one but it is still blackface. Is the person racist for what they did? arguably no, at least not intentionally, but should they stop doing it? yes. Like I can see your argument and what you’re trying to convey but I can’t agree with it.

You wanna know 2 examples of how this work?

Take the Washington Redskins football team. They claim that their name is meant to honor the achievements of American Indians, but regardless of their intent, their name is still an issue because the term Redskin is a slur used to degrade American Indians. It is use to identify American Indians based on a harmful stereotype that deems them as savages.

Now take rape jokes. Say a comedian was doing a stand-up and they made a rape joke and their intent was not to perpetuate or support rape, they’re just trying to make a joke about it. Regardless, their joke is still problematic. Regardless of intent, rape jokes demean rape victims and brush their experience aside. It can ingrain in people that rape is okay, or at least, that rape is a joke/not important enough to pay attention to.

Like blackface has been used to ridicule and belittle Black people as animals and monkeys. It has been used to replace Black actors/actresses in Hollywood when Hollywood was still super, super, super, super, racist. Essentially, it has become a way to make fun of Black people. It has become a way to oppress Black people and their experience. It has made their skin color and their culture into a costume. Blackface is just something you can’t re-brand. It has caused so much oppression on a group of people that you cannot re-brand it no matter your intent. This is why the use of the N word is so controversial.

Wanna debate with me about this? Read these in order first because they’re basically people trying to argue with me about it:
