The Red Rectangle Nebula is located about 2,300 light years away towards the constellation Unicorn.
The nebula is powered by an older binary star system. The shape of the nebula is unusual; it is likely caused by a thick circle of dust that pinches the output into cone shapes. From the viewing angle facing the torus of dust head on, the output is seen as an ‘x’. The color of the nebula is also strange, but is less understood.
