Red Harvester Ants - Texas Caprock Country - From 2003
There was a large open area next to our campsite, but it wasn’t until the second day that I noticed all the activity in that open space. Hundreds of medium-sized red ants were carrying seeds from the nearby tall grasses across the open space and down into a rather large nest opening.
I later found out that these are harvester ants. They clear the area around the nest and clear trails through the grass to their various food sources. They will sting, but are not aggressive and will leave you alone if you don’t threaten the nest.
I have included several images to give both a close up of the ants and the context of the nest.
