red faced cormorant (phalacrocorax urile)

January 4, 2016 - Red-faced Cormorant, Red-faced Shag, or Violet Shag (Phalacrocorax urile)

These cormorants are found in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. They feed on a variety of fish, as well as crustaceans. Most of their time is spent on the ocean in rocky bays close to land. Because of their remote range, they have not been studied extensively and some of their specific habits and behaviors are not known. They breed in mixed colonies of seabirds on inaccessible cliffs on rocky islands.
