Colombia-based firm Plan:b Arquitectos focus on
material practices as “eco-social areas of convergence” with the
potential to transform our environments. Commissioned to design a
pavilion for a construction fair in Medellin, the architects used the
opportunity to propose a series of conditions. Among other constraints,
Plan:b stipulated that the project must be built with materials donated
from the companies participating in the fair and put together as a mix
of equally-sized panels distributed all over the façade that could move
according to the sun’s orientation. In addition, the materials needed to
to be sustainable and affordable. At the end of the fair, having
fulfilled these requirements, the “Disconnected Pavilion” was
disassembled and donated to a low-income neighborhood in the city to
function as a community space. In this way, the pavilion cleverly showcased companies’ products in a way that was also both sustainable and innovative. Plan:b are among over 100 architects, artists, and designers participating in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial this October.
Happy release day to lauren-e-james‘s The Next Together! This is the kind of book that doesn’t fit into one box easily - it’s got history, fantasy, mystery, romance and more, plus awesome pages like blog posts, articles, etc.
I know you guys probably hate wedging (and clay recycling!) as much as I do. It makes my back and wrists hurt like the devil before I even get to sit down and throw. Do you guys have any good experiences with de-airing pug mills?
My studio so far (two l&l kilns of differing sizes, one Brent wheel, some shelves, and a little table) cost me almost nothing when I bought them. I feel like dropping the money on this new equipment would certainly help me be more prolific, but also might save me a lot of joint pain in the long run.
Siiince my studio was basically given to me for a minimal fee of like 500 dollars, is it crazy to drop a few K on a pug mill…? I feel like my kilns and wheel would have cost me at least that much. Idk. I am not planning to do this right away obviously, but it’s something I am thinking about.
