Feedback is a crucial part of a fandom, and as most of you know, there is nothing sadder than working hard on something and finally posting it, and getting dead silence in return. I don’t want that for anyone in the event, but all I can do by myself is make sure I read and review every fic and reblog all the art with tags.
I can’t force anyone to leave feedback, but I would like to challenge each and every one of you to help me out and leave feedback for all the wonderful works people will post for this project. I do know that it’s sometimes intimidating to leave feedback because you have no idea what to say, so I put together some tips that apply to both art and fics that I hope will help.
1. If you are an author or artist, please lead by example.
The more feedback there is, the more there will be. Help your fellow participants out and show everyone that giving feedback is easy and fun! It’s somehow become intimidating instead of common courtesy, and that won’t change unless people show how simple it really is. No one will start leaving feedback unless it becomes common practice, and that starts with us.
2. It doesn’t matter how much or how little you say.
Really, even just a simple “wow, great!” can make someone’s day. You don’t have to be able to point out specific things or be “knowledgeable”. If you’re comfortable writing more, great, please do, but don’t let not having enough time or not knowing what to say keep you from reviewing or commenting in tags.
3.Reblog, reblog, reblog
Liking something on tumblr is great, but reblogging means you’re sharing the work with all of your followers and helping the artist/writer to bring more people to their work. If you liked something, please reblog it. And this is a great thing to do if you really can’t bring yourself to leave written feedback. Commenting in the tags is also wonderful. Artists and writers check, I assure you.
4. Think of it as paying for the enjoyment you got from the art/fic
It really doesn’t take that much time, and if you enjoyed it, feedback is a great way to give back to the people who made that art or that fic and shared it with you for free.
5. Be polite
As long as you’re polite, it is good feedback. Don’t be demanding, don’t tell them how they should write or draw, and don’t reblog simply to say how much you hate a character or anything. Have manners. Constructive criticism is wonderful, but it has to be constructive.
6. Anonymous is completely fine
If you’re nervous about telling authors and artists what you think, there is absolutely nothing wrong with giving a guest review or sending them an ask on anon.
7. Likes, favs, follow, and kudos are wonderful but…
They don’t give the same sort of connection, and they don’t really let the artist/author know that they made someone happy. Let them know they made you happy, and they will be much more motivated to keep creating wonderful things for your enjoyment.
8. It means a lot more if you leave feedback on the original post.
If it is just posted to tumblr, reblog with tags, but if it is on pixiv or deviantart or fanfiction or AO3, leave feedback there (as well as reblogging preferably). It will mean more to the creator, and it takes the same amount of time.
Thank you for reading this, and please feel free to ask me any questions! I’d love for everyone in this event (and in the fandom) to feel like their hard work is appreciated, but I can’t do that without everyone’s help. Please, if you enjoyed a drawing/fic/graphic, leave the creator some feedback and encourage them.
